Have you ever worked in a grocery store?

I was working at a small home town grocery store till they fired me. I was a cashier working for 6.65 an hour. I was fired right before I was to get my vacation. Ok a little background. Your on your feet 8 hours plus a day. No over time-because they never scheduled you close to 40 hours. You recieved 10 minute breaks every 2 hours. Smile and be nice to the customers. Signed a rule book that said first warning would be verbal, second a write up, and so on. We werent allowed to tell custormers we were closing. But I did anyway. Why should I stay after hours when I wasnt getting over time? Would you? I told the shift manager, the store manager, that the hours of business need to be posted on the door so customers knew when the store closed. He said the store owner doesnt care what the store hours are. Our manager had passed aways so someone replaced her. I had some issues and went to talk to the store manager. Well after I got done saying my peace he tells me I have several complaints of me being rude. He didnt call me in and tell me this. Odd how I complained and automatically had complaints for my work. So does that mean I wasnt allowed to complain? The whole time that I worked there for piddly wages I saw alot happend that I didnt agree with. At least when you go to wal-mart you know what to expect. At this little store, the owner would buy discount groceries and resale them. I hear this is common for little stores but when the quaility and the cost dont match up you wonder was this owner just out for the profit and really didnt care about customers. If things were outdated and most of the store was they would mark things half price. I found stuff dated back to 2004-something is wrong with that. He didnt seem to care he didnt like his cheap food thrown away. Then the next issue, when you would get to the register sale items hardly ever rung up the sale price. Perhaps hoping the customer wouldnt notice? Of course I said something. They complained about my customer service so I had to say something. I dont agree with knowingly cheating people. And the owner goes to church-what God does he pray too? The owner also hired young kids-that is a good thing right? helping the young earn some money. What about the people working there trying to provide for their family? No insurance, no pay raises, no benefits of any kind. I ask you how would you feel in this situation? What would you do? I wrote an article in the local newspaper and told what I thought about the store but without using any names as I didnt want to get sued for slander. But it did get my story out. And I did it for all cashiers that have to stay late it wasnt just for myself. After the article my umemployment was denied. So I appealed. Still waiting to see what happens. Until the appeal I had no idea what I had been fired for except that I was rude to customers-fired after only 1 warning. Supposedly I had cussed out a customer-I have never in my life cussed out a customer in the 20 years that I have been a cashier and I told the appeals court that. Not sure what good it did for me to appeal other than to tell my story. We shall see. Ever has this problem?

I've worked in a grocery store before. I got paid the time i worked not just the shift time. Its very sucky wages here at the grocery stores here. I quit actually to go to school. I did work at a resturant that expected us to work overtime without pay. When i asked why i only got paid for 8 hours when i worked 10 hours...got told that "if the waitresses werent lazy cows" they would get paid for the time they were there. Any other place i've ever worked at has complimented me on my work ethic and been pleased with me working my tail off. I quit two days later. I made sure i told EVERYONE who asked why i quit why. I also filed a complaint against the owner when i quit.

I got paid for my time the thing is store closed at 9 and people were allowed to come in and shop after closing and I was expected to wait on them. Personally after dealing with the public for 8 hours plus its time for a break. They made sure your hours never went over 40 no matter how late you stayed after closing. So they never had to pay over time. And Ive found most places do that now days to save money. Not a good quaility in an employer. As I know the owner went on several wonderful trips over seas with his family while I couldnt afford something like that. And expecting me to work for crap it WAS WRONG. Yes I did get a good job and by golly I dont have to deal with the public and I get paid for over time. And I make alot more money with less bull crap.

I have never worked at a grocery store before. I hope everything works out for you. I think they should have investigated further. They say the customer is always right though.

Yes the customer is always right when the owner says so to keep business rolling. Not a good quaility as workers should have some sort of rights too. Things are much better thank you.

That sucks and I am sorry that that happened to you my friend and I hope that things turn out for the best,I have never personal worked at any type of grocery store but I have applied at several but never got hired, the only place I have technically ever worked was Arby's and I worked there for the equivalent of two weeks at like three hours a day because that was all they would give me,and then they fired me saying I was two slow which if they had given me more hours, maybe I would have picked my speed up and been able to make sandwich's at the rate they wanted me to,I have had a friend who worked at Food Lion, and I have a cousin who works at Food Lion and they both said that working at grocery store is crappy, and my cousin said its definitely not the way to go,I think he is like forty and maybe that is why he does not working at Food Lion but I think that a job is a job,and no matter where you work you will find people who try to cause problems.
