Now, I now how it is done - I'm not asking that. It was doing that today which is why I thought to start this discussion. And don't go getting bent outta shape with this, I want this to be fun. My family wasn't particuallarly religious and we just marveled when it happened. I first hear someone call it "The Angels and the Devils are fighting" when I was probably 11 or 12. Later, I heard it called "The Devil is beating his wife" when I was in college. So, what have you heard it called, or did you have a name for this in your family? I would love to know, so Please share!

I had always heard when it was raining and the sun was shinning that it was going to rain at the same time the next day. The "Devil beating his wife" or "God bowling" was when it was thundering are a couple of things I recall hearing when I was little.

trying to resolve discussions and we had a thunderstorm today and the roomie said when she was at the blind school, they'd lay in bed with the window open and take a turn pretending to be bowling, the loud claps were strikes!

Sheesh does it seem like almost everyone has an attitude today? Anyhow, today here in Minnesota we have had fgreezing rain, sleet, ice, and now snow falling. Highways are getting terrible to drive on also. Love this winter weather we get here in Minnesota. Being from a Catholic family I can not recall any particular name given to this when it rains and the sun is shining. Just raining with a possible rainbow is all I know of it. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

We might see a freeze before Thanksgiving, but I'm not holding my breath. We've gotten close already this winter, but didn't quite make it in town.

I've heard, and sung both ditties, but they are specific to the rain/sun thing.

Here in south africa, the afrikaans people call it, jakals trou met wolf se vrou. It means the jackal marries wolf's wife. I have no idea what they were thinking. It just doesnt make sense. I havent heard any others here so this discussion is very interesting. It happens a lot here. And we get tripple rainbows when it happens.

Long time no see Zorrogirl! Wow - that's a different one! I guess it makes as much sence as any other. We get rainbows when the sun is low, but this was at 3ish in the afternoon so the sun was still pretty high in the sky. Triple rainbows are pretty awesome! I've seen a few.

I have actually never heard anyone discuss this phenomena at all. It's interesting what your family and friends have said about it.

Hi again, I asked around here about different names for that. The only variation is slight, 'Sunnyshower' used in Britain, which is probably where we got it from and modded it a tad. I used to work underground in mines, I had it drummed into me, NO whistling underground, brings bad luck, the knockers will get you. ?? OK, no whistling, keeps the others happy and they don't go off at me, I sang silly songs instead when the jack hammer wasn't pounding.

Really! And the poster before you says they call them "sunshowers" and I think that'll be my choice from now on!

Hi, interesting what some folks come up with. In Australia we use this rather non-superstitious term "Sunshower'.

I'm not going to say it happens "alot" but it does happen and I just wonder of there are any other terms besides the ones I have heard. Now I've heard that "its going to rain at the same time tomorrow" (it didn't by the way) and something about a wolf and a jackel and a wife.... don't remember exactly....

Like I said, my family never called it anything. The event is when the sun is shining while rain is falling on you. I have heard it called "the devil is beating his wife" or "the angels and the devils are fighting" (this one from a couple of different people, all Roman Catholics.)

I have never heard of it being called any kind of name before in my family. We always said that when that happens, it will rain at the same time tomorrow.

We have always said that "the devil is beating his wife" when it is raining while sunny. I'm wondering if it's a Southern thing, because the people who said they heard it called that are all Southern. lol Something kind of funny...Medicare asked my Mom to participate in a study about services recieved. The lady who comes to do the interviews about every 3 months was here one day when the sun was shining and it started raining. My Mom said, "Oh, the devil is beating his wife again." The lady looked absolutely terrified! She said, "Excuse me?" So my Mom repeated it and explained it to her. She said, "Oh, my! I don't like to talk about things like that!" We didn't laugh about it until after she left. But we did have a good laugh. I told my Mom that the lady probably thinks we are all devil worshippers or something now. It's great being Southern.

Well, I am in Texas and that's where I've heard it. I have never heard it back East when I was visiting family - but like I said - I never heard it called anything until I was older.

I, too, heard the "angels & the Devil" thing, but I couldn't tell you how old I was when I heard it. Pretty young, I think. I =think= I recall once hearing that it was God weeping when that happens. But it never struck me as an appropriate visual metaphor for such a heartbreaking event; it's too pretty when it happens! Maggiepie
