Have you ever wanted to become an Inventor and what would you invent?

Imagine if you will what it would be like to become an inventor. What would you invent? What does an inventor do all day to invent? What is the process one must have to invent, and what tools are required to invent? I sometimes just put things on a table that I would normally throw away and try and figure out how to make something useful out of things I normally would discard, especially plastic containeres of all shapes and sizes. Is invention an art, science, or a skill based craft? Where do inventors work? How do inventors get paid? Seems that an inventor might be the purest form of "work at home concept" Any thoughts?

I think that more than looking at pieces and trying to conceptualize a 'new whole'. one has to be doing something and say "This would be easier if....", or "This would work better if...". Then you can return to the pieces to see how you can make the tool or idea you thought of while you were encountering the need. ("Necessity, the mother of invention", George Farquhar 1677-1707) I would imagine most inventors make a model or prototype of their idea at home. Prior to making it, I would hope that they've applied for a patent on their idea. Otherwise, it could very well be some one else making the money. For getting paid, some inventors produce and sell their item themselves. Others sell the rights to produce it. Have you come up with a good idea for something? If so, you might want to check out this website for patent information. http://www.uspto.gov/main/patents.htm

I suppose I am curious about the process thinking that it might be a good avenue when I retire from the nine to five so to speak.

At one time you had to submit a working prototype. They do not require that anymore.

Hi Boraxo. Good question. As a kid, I used to wish I could come up with many things. I just needed little freedom. Those were the good old days for somethings, and bad old days for certain things. I really don't know now. I would like to, but nothing comes to my mind now. May be the added responsibilities.

I think spending some time when I retire trying to invent something practical would be time well spent.

I would be an inventor as I come up with an idea for something all the time. I also have an artistic bent too and I think the two go together. It seems to be an ability to think in graphic 3D. Artists usually have what they want to put down on paper or canvas or carve out of rock in their minds before they put tools to work on material. It is the same with an inventor I think, they can see things where others do not seem to. The problem with inventions is that it costs so much money to patent an idea. You have to search to make sure the idea has not been patented before. You will only get patent protection for so many years and then it becomes public. You get paid by either manufacturing the product and selling it, licensing other to do the same and collecting a royalty, or get a royaltly when others incorporate your idea in their product or use you idea like a manufacturing process. There are people who will try and steal you idea so you have to have a lawyer I would think. So with the expense of developing and patenting your idea and then defending it, it had better be a good idea and one that makes a lot of money unless you are just doing inventions as a hobby.

Yes I can relate to the cost associated with getting an invention developed and produced. I guess I will have to come up with something as small a a paper clip, or thumb tack.

its really problematic thing with us that if we don't have to do any thing than its also a problem but its wonder that every body doing work and varius job for relaxation and security, so i think there are lots of things as a problems which would always exist in the world , so we should think about the problem which we can resolve .....

Before am not interested to invent as my belief is that only scientists can be an inventor but hearing new inventions here in the Philippines I believe anybody can invent something he's interested to...Have you heard of one of the inventions here a car running not using fuel but instead charging it with the electricity? also another invention of a car,if I remember it right using water instead of fuel...I didnt mind these only now I remember reading your topic...we have a neighbor before their using a stove where gas their using is from the animal wastes deposit...that I didnt mind either, but just now I realize anyone can invent not only famous scientists or maybe they became famous because of their inventions...(lol) another one I saw students in tv using solar in charging their cellphones...If I would invent I like something that would be of use to many that could contribute to our economy something like the solar charging of the cellphones thereby conserving energy.

Actually not exactly inventor I wanted to become but I want to become a researcher who is in search of a cure for all types of cancers.Though keeping this in view I do have become a scientist but I am very far from my target as till now I am establishing my lab for the above purpose.Regarding inventions are concerned I feel nowadays inventers take patent and anyone who wants to use their invention has to pay them.

AHHHH research one of my favorite past times. I wish I had the motivation to take research a step further that just getting answers, but to solve problems that lead to contributions to our society.

Yes, I wanted to invent a time machine so I can go back and change the things I wish to change. But then again maybe thats the reason why it wasn't invented at all, I mean many people must have tried to do it. But life has its way to get back at you :).

Actually there are people working on time machines, if we had a piece of that pie would assume money would be no problem. If you had a time machine where would you go first.....back in time or forward. The forward option sounds just as appealing *SMILE* Let me know if you find one of these machines I wanna take a ride.

in my opinon inventor is everywhere ,u and me or someone else . i don't think an inventer is someone who invent a thing that can infulence others life .we could be an inverter too .to change the uselss thing into useful .they will get paid when they satisfied with what they done .

I think you are correct there is some inventor in all of us. Invention is not limited to creating machines, it also is creating concepts.

Invention can be combined with the art. If a invention looks gogerous and morden, it sounds great. I don't know clearly where should a inventor work at. But a inventor can work at home. They will be paid by selling their invention patent.Huh!

I agree the appearance should be appealing to the eye. I know this man in Florida who wanted to create a standup urinal for the common home, I just wonder how to make such a thing art, something that looks gogerous and modern.

Okay, when i was very very young, after i listening to the story of Edison, I was in deep want to become a inventor. To create new stuffs that bring happiness and convenience, I think I will dedicate myself to the inventions. Maybe most of the time, I will spend time on thinking how to create things. It was a nice dream for me though it will never happens to me in the future...lol

When I was a child I also read books about Edison. Technology today is so complex that coming up with an invention to change the world as the inventions of Edison, would indeed be a lifetime task. I think perhaps invention is a trait that some have more than others. I believe a good canidate is a person that takes things apart to see how they work. A good inventor of course could put it back together differently and it would still work *SMILE*

First off a quick yes to the I would love to invent something. Second why would someone want to get on here tell there ideas for the world to see and steel there ideas? Third I can say this my and a buddy have been working on a permanent magnet propetual motor that is currently developed by us as a cooling fan. The problem we are having is lack of power currently and once it is going no stopping mechanism as this would add weight to it. I am currently working on a computer control mechanism that will control all aspects of it and monitor critical items like vibrations speed torque things that could help identify where to get more power out of it.

*SMILE* I could of clarified that I was not looking for inventions, when I ask what one would invent, but was looking for something more general like "I think I would like to invent a mechnical device, or perhaps an household item", and with your inference to stealing someones invention, I do not believe you have to worry bout it cause your description is off the hook and seriously doubt that anyone would want to steal your cooling fan. You confuse me with the propetual and then lack of power, ummm propetual nah not worth stealing no such animal unless your from another planet cause we earthlings still working on it.

I never thought of it like that but you are right. When someone invents something, then someone else likes it and buys the rights to the odea. I guess I really do not know how this works. Pretty much guessing here. I have had some ideas about things I wanted to invent but that was some time ago and I have forgotten what they were.
