Junk food refers to fast food that is easy to make and is tasty.Their contents are rich in sodium ,salts ,and fats which provide high calories, but has zero nutritive value.Time constraints and great taste are two factors that influences you to go for junk food. But junk food get their taste from lavish usage of oil, salt and sugar, which keep you addicted to it,unmindful of the loss of nutrition ,junk food pushes you to. Ingredients of junk food not only make them appealling to you,but are also health hazadrous. The fat contents have high cholesterol levels.Sugar will lead to obesity, and cholesterol and salt can set off a chain of diseases ranging from blood pressure, stroke and heart diseases, and even kidney failure...... So try to avoid junk food ,or atleast minimise it,and steer your children away from them.....Your health is in your hands.....Good luck and happy and sensible eating to all of you........

Most junk food is processed food , the food is mostly stripped of nutrients. Many of them are also added with chemicals to prolong their shelf life. In the fast food industry, certain chemicals and growth hormones are added to vegetables and livestock to speed up the the time it takes to grow them. Snacks such as candy, chips, popcorn, marshmallows, beef jerky, french fries, sodas, etc., are usually added with chemical preservatives and are low in essential vitamins and minerals. These are some of the reasons why junk food is cheaper than organic food and why it is bad for youu. It is a pity that many people choose junk food over organic food because it saves them money but they do not realize how much money they may lose in the long run.

Hi Bala...so your little princess has not stepped into her teens yet?....Oh its ok to have Pizzas and other such food once in a while...,so long as she takes heatlhy and nutritious food daily, which will supply her with all the minerals and vitamins and proteins that is required for her growth..But Bala you wont have cause to worry about her, because usually girls eat less(especially junk food),as they grow, because they are always weight consciuos and beauty conscious.....

Hi Rose, Who don't know the fact? But do you the think people will keep away from the same. No, because it is very tasty. I think to stop the people from eating junk food is difficult because they already aware of the facts but just ignoring the same and are running behind of the same just for the taste. Children are also very much attracted with these kinds of foods. The pity is that they can get the junk food easily from the School Canteen. Actually school authorities are against the junk food but they are allowing the same in School canteen itself. In Delhi you can easily gets junk food from the streets. A large amount of people are selling fast food and earning handsome amount. They don't want buildings for shops they can run the business in a pulling vehicle wherever they like (mostly in a crowded area). I agree, our health is in our hands and also give the same advise, if you can't stop it, its ok but try to reduce it for your good health.

I think that is the case in the past... more and more fast foods and so called other companies are making their products more nutritious... since health conscious customers are on the rise... Like before i buy something in the grocery... i would always check out the nutrition facts at the back... since i am trying to avoid foood that contain tartrazine in them... when it comes to fast food... i stick to the salads...

Yes aseretdd, there is now a great in flow of healthy fast food in the market......though I am not really sure of their claims...But I know you are sensible and will be careful about what you eat....So long as you avoid too much of oil and salt and sugar, and stick on to more of veggies and fruits and keep a check on the calories you it,I guess you dont have to worry much about your health...... good luck and good health to you............

Hi Rose, This is just a great post and I hope that many people will see the truth in it and change their eating habits at least a little. Too much fast food is just not good for anyone. I have heard of people who never cook at home but always eat at those fast food chains. People may be living longer now but with this trend they will not enjoy good health. Blessings.

Hi Pose....yes its time people realise that health is wealth......And you know Pose,I do believe that people are trying to be more health conscious...Judging by the increasing number of people who come to jog in the near by park everyday. But sometimes I wonder,is it the necessity to eat junk food afterwards ,that is acting as a bait to these people, prompting them to run eagerly?.....

I never eat junk food.Whenever i see junk sellers.I always try to avoid them.I see many people buying and eating which makes me tempted to eat.Still i refuse it.If i fell hungry outside i either eat in a hotel of foods that are branded and hygienic.

Well I myself don't eat Fast Food, because I don't like meat. So yes you could say I am a vegetarian, but it is because I do not like the taste of meat, not because I don't want the animals to be killed. Junk food does not entirely refer to fast food. It also refers to most snacks, cookies, chips and many other snacks. I still tend to eat some other junk food, but I am very very skinny. I also am a runner.

Hi Roseo I pretty much try to eat healthy and my mom is fed up with my freakiness. I not only eat proper and good I ensure all other with me do the same. And that has successfully made my mom the most innovative, healthy yet tasty chef around. She keeps on innovating on experimenting on nutrition and spicing it up with the healthiest thing. My experience in a hospital could not have got better implemented otherwise. My father is a cardiac patient with hypertension and guess what he's is just keeping well . All for the fuss I make all the time over healthy eating.

Tell me something Rose, every body knows smoking is injurious to health, but every day thousands of new brands are manfucatured........we all know junk food is poison, yet this poison is given different shapes and tastes and are brought into the market to tempt us........why don't we just destroy them from roots. If refined sugar is not good, why manufacture it.....why not sell only brown sugar or healthy sugar in market.........I just want to catch hold of that first person who made samosas and pizzas and all those yummy junks.........and want to kill him.....now we are addicted to such things and so are our children........ and it is not easy to control our temptations so easily.......I wish such things had never manufacture and were unknown taste to us....... Yes it is never too late.....but it is already late.......

Hi Rose, actually, I am aware of hazards of junk foods, recently I have made many changes in our life style...my new additions are like soya milk, apples, oatmeal, canola oil, olives, olive oil.....green vegetables raw......., but the problem is that my son eats mostly junk food.....so he is not getting any good nutrients, and my daughter eats very less and she is very fussy....she will remain hungry but not eat things that she does not want to eat........so she too does not get real nutrients.......I really don't know what to do.......give me some tips dear....I am sure you have some good advise for my children and me too

Hello Aps dear...........Yes I know how you feel but its no good blaming others. This world is full of self centered people who are interested only in their own well being, and not of their fellow beings...Most people wnat to make money by hook ot by crook..They hevw no scruples and no compassion for others, and their only aim is to manipulate the weakness of fellow bieings and make money... Somasos, chicken fries hanging in glass cases are all there to tickle our taste buds and to tempt us to sink our teeth in them.....hhhmmmm yummy.....But its up to us to eat what is right and good for our health and not to succumb to temptation .well you remind me about Adam and and the forbidden apple.....

Hello Dear......I can give you plenty of advise on food, kyom ki tum samajdhar ho..But when it comes to teenage kids......I put my hands up in surrender.........I prefer to take up the role of fiancial adviser to Obama, rather than handle food habits of "BIG" kids....sigh... As I was telling mayka yesterday both my boys used to label all food that I make and serve them as junk food, and preferred eating out......And now you know, both of them have to fend for themselves and they are learning it the hard way...My elder one always wanted chappathis and did not like rice at all...Now he is sitting in US and cooking and eating rice and veggies by himself....Because he says eating out is expensive.........And the other day he was already worried about price rise of veggies and rice..abd my younger one has been away for barely 45 days from home, and he is also missing home food, though he doesnt openly admit it...... SO Aps what you do is,just let them eat to their hearts content, they will sooner or later begin to realize the importance of what we mothers have been trying to drum into their ears...See what a lambhi chowdi bhashan dee hai mainee.......

Hello Rose. I know that junk food is bad to our health. In the past few weeks, I have had quite a few different kinds of junk food that I have been suffering from a sore throat these days. Sometimes I eat the junk food because I miss it and cannot resist it. I appreciate your informative discussion, from which I have learned so much. Happy posting.

Luckily both me and my kids are not too fond of junk food. It may be just a pizza once in 2/3 months. But when I was staying in a hostel I would eat a lot of junk food as we did not get our lunch in the hostel. Lucky I did not fall sick at that time. Chinese food is also very bad for health which though I am very fond of I avoid.

I have gone through this phase when my kids were small and they would go out practically everyday with their father....and leave me alone at home screaming and glaring at the food I had cooked.....later after him I had become a sort of a recluse and would not go into a restaurant or a theatre for some years.....its just this year that I have again started going to restaurants and take them just once in a month or two months....

I know that and try to make good food choices so generally eat healthy. However every couple of months I get a craving for a hamburger and fries so I head for the local Harvey's Hamburger joint and have an Angus Burger with cheese and bacon and a side order of fries, and I usually get a salad too, Yum, then I am good for another month or so. I guess that won't hurt me like a steady diet of the stuff. I also get a craving every month or so for a Dairy Queen hot fudge sundae. I don't need the calories but it seems to satisfy me and I am good for another month or so.

Since I eat pretty healthy, when I DO have something that is highly processed (like a Hostess something-or-other) it makes me gag. Can't help it, it just does. It's amazing how healthy (and cheap!) cooking in a crock-pot can be! Happy MyLotting!

Yes, I have to agree that cooking in a crock pot is so healthy and cheap. Plus it is convenience and you don't have to stand over the stove. Just by adding some vegetables, seasoning, some type of liquid, maybe a little meat, you can put the top on the crock pot, go to work and come home to a healthy hot meal. Thanks Princess for reminding us that we can have healthy and cheap meals just by using our crock pot. Mine will be coming out today.

I agree with you. Junk food can be extremely harmful if not taken care at the right time. Especially if you go to a restaurant, they use the same oil so many times. The re-using the oil is not good for our health. I am quite fond of chinese food, but now I have restricted myself to having it once or twice a month. Its ok to enjoy it once in a while. Having it regularly is definitely not good. Ajinomoto and all the sauce that they use is not at all good. Actual chinese food(in china) is quite bland. The sauce and other ingredients they use is to suit the Indians. Even aerated drinks is not good for health. My nephew is addicted to the fizz stuffs, he demands it almost everyday. The sooner we realise the harmful effects of junk foods the better it would be.

I stopped eating junk food 6 years ago and never felt better. I avoid processed foods and as much sugar and starches as possible. I make most of my own "treats" but will buy those that have less than 5 ingredients and NO high fructose corn syrup. If I eatice cream, ithas to be just real cream, nothing low fat because the lo fatthings they substitute are more harmful. By lowereing your carbs, you will also lower your triglycerides. I went from 225 to 85. My Ratios ( which are a better health indicator than total cholesterol nubers) are perfect.

Junk foods are junk and trh right place for junk is in the dustbin. why stuff it in your stomach? We oftenmake this mistake. We stuff a lot of junk into our stomach and that junkspreads all over the body and teh body starts storing a lot of junk and a s a result starts bloating. If we do not look after our body, who will?

Our parents keeps on telling us not to eat junk food for it is not good in one's health and it will just made us sick. I still remember when I was still little that everytime I will ask my mom to give me money because I want to buy a junk food, what she will do is tell me that she has no money. However, whenever I will tell her I want to buy a bread, she gives me money eventhough bread is more expensive than junk foods. Those time I envy kids who are always allowed by their parents to eat many junk foods because my parents is so strict with me in eating those kind. But now that I am a grown up, I realized what my parents always telling on me. I witnessed how my cousin got sick because of eating too much junk foods. The doctor said it was UTI- (urinary tract infection)and the cause of it is too much eating of junk foods which contains so much salt.Because of that, I realized there is no reason to got envy and it is always good to listen to our parents.

What you said I already know. I still cannot help to eat junk food sometimes. One of reason is that I donot have enough time to cook, and I am not a good cooker. the another reason is I do not live with my family people, or friends, I always eat lonely, it is boring, I do not enjoy it.

Hello qiong....it appears you eat junk food only sometimes....So try to cut down this frequenzy, and eat more of vegetables and fruits..And all the other reasons you have stated ,for not being able to eat the right kind of food, can easily be overcome...You dont have to be a good cook and be surrounded by family and friends all the tine ,for eating healthy food...You can just make some salads with vegetables and eat fruits and drink fruit juice also every day......Also try to include walking in your daily routine, and see the difference.......Good luck to you........
