Does a person's star colour influence the way you act towards them?

I am interested to know people's opinions regarding this actually. If you look at many discussions within mylot you will see many instances of white stars interacting with white stars; blue stars interacting with blue stars; and so forth..... Then of course you get to some of the more controversial topics and you will see a whole bunch of 2,3 and 4 stars going at it! Personally I will still always go for discussions that catch my attention and I don't really pay much attention to the other person's star colour at all. Yes, I interact a lot with people that share the same star colour as me; but this is more to do with friendships I have built up over a long time rather than any move on my part to seek out people with the same ranking. So do you think the star colour aspect has anything to do with who we interact with and how? Or is it just a case of people doing what normally happens in society and gravitating towards like-minded people?

I think it does. This came is just timely when I was hoping to participate actively in increasing the star ratings of a few of the users here whose star ratings are quite low and no way they deserve this! I have come across many who are good writers with 4-5-6-7....ratings. Some are eve as low as a 2 or a 3! Obvious courtesy: some vindictive soul. God bless them. I always rate my friends positive but now whenever I come across good posts, I rate them positive, specially if they have low ratings. Some would say that I take this too seriously, I think I must because I feel, the motivation, the appreciation, should come from us, the users, so that the quality of the forum is uplifted. This is a great place and we must maintain the good will of it. It would be utter stupidity to bask in the glory of blue and red stars. Specially so, when the stars are essentially partial and in many cases goes down and up on our whims! I love to interact with people with good thought processes and substantial approaches and also having good sense of humor and that is not affected by the colour of the star by any means.

I rate my friends positively too mimpi; but I also rate every person that responds to me with effort positively as well! Some of the people I most enjoy interacting with have very low star ratings and it's usually because they stand strongly behind their convictions and couldn't care less about their popularity levels because of it. You gotta admire that! I am just me really and my star is my star. Yes I seem to interact more with people that have red and blue stars than I do with the lower ratings on a day to day basis; but again I do feel that it just so happens that the people I have become close to are just being themselves also and THEIR star is their star regardless of the colour it may be. (I hope that makes sense!) There is no question though that on some levels, like attracts like; but what I do find interesting when I look at some discussions, is that you will sometimes find groups of similarly rated people interacting heavily; yet other people with higher stars barely receive an acknowledgment or even a reply. Again I think this has more to do with friendships made than for any other reason; but I do find it interesting nonetheless! The same can go in the opposite direction too with higher rated people that receive comments from lower rated ones so this is not limited to one way or the other at all! Nor is it a common theme and is just an occasional observation. Anyways, I love to interact with people too and I also enjoy the exchanges both for and against whatever I may be trying to say at any given point in time. This is what makes this site interesting! Thanks for the response mimpi.

That's so true! The bunch of people who interact on daily basis have similar taste, way of thinking, similar likings and guess what almost similar star colours! And I rate all the respondents positive. And try to boost the newbies with deserving BRs and positive ratings. Their involvement is most necessary. And when my friend here is demoted to a lower star rating from a higher one I do not rest till reaches the higher one. I know quality cannot be determined by colour but I cannot deny the feel god thing attached to it. Another thing James, recently, I have been noticing a group of newbies with excellent thoughts and writing skill and I cannot but rate them!

I too give importance to the substance of the discussion, without paying much attention to the star rating. But when it comes to close friends,i make sure the rating is done to help them get to the maximum rating possible. I have noticed this though that people sometimes who speak themselves freely and tend to be negative, not necessarily to the extent of being profain, get rated negatively. But they continue to express themselves as they used to. And if you look closely the friends we interact do have more or less the same colour if not one lower, its because we keep rating them all the time.

A valid point in this regard are newbies. They do not have a star till they reach 100. So one cannot form a predetermined opinion in this regard. You form an impression simply on the discussion, response and comments.

I follow the same lines of thinking alok. It is the context of a discussion that will ultimately determine my participation or not; and of course I will look out for my friends as well! MyLot is no different to any other social situation and in real life we look out for our friends and family so why would we not do the same here to some extent? Give and take forms the foundation of ANY solid relationship anyway. I agree with you in regards to your comments about some people who speak freely getting rated negatively and especially where religion is concerned! But I do admire their stand and I also will NEVER rate someone negative for having an opinion or disagreeing with me and never will. It's differences of opinion that keep things exciting and fresh! Thanks for the response.

Yes, this is a very good point alok. I have to admot that there have been a number of new people I have seen on many occasions that I immediately notice because you can see straight away that they have the potential to be interesting. Even without a star yet you can tell. It is sad though because sometimes you never see some of them again.

I am glad to see that it became of no consequence in the end riya. For me it's all about the context of the discussion, what they are saying and how they are saying it that mattersmost of all. Star colour has nothing to do with it really. A first impression is definitely made the second we read a new post so I agree there is no need to negate what your Elders said too! You're a perfect example of how irrelevant star colour is and how it's NOT a reflection of the person owning it at all. Maybe I need to get me some more awesome too then? Ah stuff it, I'm just gonna be me and the rest can be whatever it is. Fanks for the word bits 'n all Stormy! Nice spinning heart there too by the way. I wouldn't even consider interacting with someone with a blue star... they are all a bunch of boot-lickers. Oh, wait, you have a blue star don't you? Ummm, what I really meant was that they have very polished boots and probably an expensive wardrobe as well. Not only that they are intelligent, popular, funny, and have very good grammar. How am I doing? Do you think I will ever sport a blue star???

lol. Can you see your face in my boots then passingfancy? In reference to the comment below as well, my typing is bad at times too and my grammar is not always perfect either! If a blue star is important to you then I see no reason why you will not achieve one as well. The misconception of many is that people with 10 stars are shepp; or always "nice" and congenial. This is just not true at all! Some may be, sure, but most are not this way at all! Thanks for the response and I shall watch with interest to see what star you start with when you reach 100 posts!

If I feel that I can contribute anything to a discussion I don't care whether their star is white, blue, green, yellow, or any other color. And of course I do answer discussions of those who are on my friends list and some of them don't have the same star as me but most times I will enjoy their discussion even more then the ones with blue stars..

I think others should have that attitude also, We just shouldn't shun people or their discussions just because their star is a different color. I know I would hate to be shunned just because my star wasn't the same as someone else's I would want a fair chance and that is what I give everyone.

Great attitude! This is how I tend to be myself and it all comes down to my level of interest in the discussion topic and if I actually have anything worthwhile to add or not. Star colour has nothing whatoever to do with any of it. Hats off to being colour blind I reckon! Thanks for the comments Becca.

Hi my friend James. I don't think I am influenced by My Lot members star color or number. A friend joined My Lot and his writing is excellent but he discusses some unpopular ideas. So his star is 8 but I guess if he just wrote more popular things he might get a 9 or 10 star. I have noticed that some people that write well but talk about controversial topics and say really unpopular things have a star rating of 2 or 3. My favorite topic is travel and so that is a happy kind of topic for many other people too. I discuss abortion and religion sometimes and those are touchy subjects. I often find I am discussing things with people with the same star as me so I believe in your suggestion that people gravitate towards like-minded people.

Hi maximax. It is definitely the people that tend to be more outspoken and controversial that end up with the lower rankings, especially the ones that go hard in the religion discussions! I agree that travel is certainly one of the "safer" ones too but you are doing exactly what others are doing and that is honing in on what interests you the most. This is surely a far more important factor than star colour! I get involved in the more controversial discussions from time to time too, but it is not a common practice for me to be honest. Sometimes I really do wish to put my two cents in with some of these discussions but when I see how other responses are heading, I end up deciding not to. I sort of liken it to a fight at a party, sometimes it's better to sit back and watch the melee rather than jump on in! lol. As always though, it all comes down to my mood and particular interest at any point in time. Thanks for the response and happy travels!

I think that the context of what people say in their posts is a far more accurate sign of their personality than a star could ever be! Sure, there are some people that have a low star because they are rude or arrogant, or don't make any effort; but many people have them because they dare to speak out as well. It certainly keeps things interesting on here and that's what is most important to me otherwise I would end up bored pretty quickly I think. Thanks for the response cream97.

I hadn't noticed that before, James. I don't take any notice of people's star colours, as I know from personal experience your star colour can change very rapidly. I lost more than 30 points from mine overnight when a troll from another site found me and went through all my comments giving me negative ratings. It was a bit alarming at the time (it's not particularly nice to think someone really dislikes you that much), and I doubt I'll ever get back to where I was - but since the troll was banned my star has stayed relatively stable. It's not the most important thing about myLot though - I've made lots of lovely friends here, and have a lot of laughs. My friends don't care at all what colour my star is!

Just for the record guybrush, it's not an overly common uccurence, but more of an occasional obeservation is all. I always read about trolls and have seen their handiwork on many occasions. It's quite disappointing really to think that people are prepared to go to such lengths and usually over such trivial things too! AT least you were able to identify the offe4nder and have them removed. It's great to see that you value your friendships and the humour over all else as well. I am sure that in time your star will creep back up as a result of this attitude! Thanks for the response.

lol. You will get your star once you reach 100 posts matersfish. From that point forward, it will go up and down depending on how other people rate your posts. 10 is the highest and 1 (or no star at all) is as low as it gets. Some people like to maintain a high ranking, some prefer a lower one..... Some people wish stars didn't even exist! But they are here so it's up to you what you wish to aim for. It just takes a little time is all. When I first joined a couple of years back, I posted many discussions and would sometimes get no responses at all! But eventually you start to add friends, get to know people, interact with several regularly..... And it all builds up from there. Good luck getting to 100! Next stop is then 200 and you can start using smilies. Cut and paste ability then comes at 500 and you can also add pics to your responses at 500 too.

Yeah, I think I'll need a star to be taken seriously maybe. I have 4 open discussions and a total of 5 responses. Not that it matters; I'm fine commenting on everyone else's posts, but it does seem - at least on the surface for a beginner - that those with higher ratings have their discussions take precedence. One step closer to 100.

Hi James, I think people in general gravitate to like minded people in real life as well as in cyber space. A lot of people including myself pay no attention whatsoever to the colour of the star. Right now I don't remember the colour of your star although I must have seen it. Mostly people respond to topics that interest them and to topics where they think they can contribute. There are people though who take this star business very seriously, they post about it, leave Mylot because of it and accuse people of minus rating them even though nobody except Mylot Admin knows who is minus or plus rating. Stars fall and rise, so does the sun every day. Why sweat the trivial things in life.

Hi Linda. I agree. It happens in real life so why wouldn't it happen here too? It all comes down to relevance and interest and if we see something that grabs our attention then we go for it! There are definitely people that are very attached to their stars, yes. To be honest I like having a 10 star and it means a lot to me to have it because I have worked very hard to get it! Would I leave mylot if it fell though? No I would not. I would work hard to get it back up again. I agree there is no point sweating over something like this, but I give everything I do in life all I've got so this is no different I guess! lol. Thanks for the response.

Yes, this is basically my point! Most of us just want to respond to interesting discussions, especially if we feel that we have something of substance and value to add to them. I don't take the star rating business very seriously anymore, now that I know what it's all about. I will still complain if my legitimate posts get deleted for no reason, but I no longer complain about star rating. There is so much more to worry about. :)

I dont think it is the colour of the star that matters but the number inside the star. I am not interested of star rating here, i consider it as a decoration before my name only. It doesnt matter for me if what colour of stars they have or even if they dont have any stars i still like interact with them as long they also want to interact with me. I dont usually rate any discussion or responses before but i change now because many mylotters are concern about their star rating here, so i give positive mark to everyone who responded my discussion, approve without thinking.

What an apt discussion for someone who just noticed her star went from blue to red and her reputation number went from a hundred to 89 in no time! I don't care what others said but I was proud of that perfect star. Now, I'm no longer perfect. See me pout! Yes, I started discussing some "controversial" discussions but they were something I believed in and guess what? Blue to red! Blue to red! Blue to red! Anyway, I guess sacrificing an imaginary star to help the cause one believes in is so well worth it as well as just thinking that the people I'm fighting for go through real human persecutions. But anyway, now I feel a bit left out, seeing most of you guys that I interact with are holders of the coveted blue stars. But I still feel very much welcomed and the discussions are still very interesting to I guess, to answer your question, I don't really think it has to do with the star color aspect but how I find the topics interesting, funny and worth my time.

I have noticed your star ratings drop SaintAnne and yes, it did happen fast! I am not aware of what discussions you have posted that are supposedly "controversial" though? Hmmm. Maybe I missed a couple? Yes, I have a 10 star and I am proud of that fact too; but I AM just being myself and if I ended up being driven downwards then what can I do really? Yes it would bother me because I would be wondering why and who etc but I am not going to become Mr Congeniality in every instance just for the sake of keeping it! Like many others, I have worked very hard to be detailed, precise and engaging throughout my entire time on mylot and I try to give 100% effort to everything I do in life! My forends receive my constant attention of course; but topic relevance and interest to me are a major fqactor and not star colour at all. Thanks for the response.

I have explained what it all means in a reply up above murderistic. Having a low star by the way is not necessarily a bad thing at all! It all comes down to WHY it is this way. If a person has a low star because they are set in their ways and have strong beliefs etc that they will strive to put across no matter what; then good for them! If they have a low star because people rate them badly for a lack of effort or for being offensive or rude or something, then this is obviously not such a good thing at all. As long as people make an effort it doesn't really matter. Thanks for the response.

And don't worry about my name, it's just a slang word that means something along the lines of awesome or really cool... :)
