Am I the only person who hasn't read the Stephenie Meyer series?

I know how wildly popular the series is but books about vampires just don't seem to do it for me. If you've read the books, what do you find so appealing about the books?

I've read the books (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn) of Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series. It took me a while to get to them, despite of their popularity, but I finally buckled down and read them. Sine I'm a PNR (paranormal romance) addict, I decided to check these books out. The books are actually written for Young adults, so it would be considered tame in comparison to other PNR. I did enjoy reading the books. They are not great literature, and I don't even think it can be compared to JK Rowling's Harry Potter when it comes to writing, but it does have likeable characters, an interesting plot, and enough tension to make you want to keep on reading. Furthermore, for the teenagers, having a cute vampire thrown in the mix, just send them swooning..LOL...

Thanks. I guess that my observations about the book from the movie trailer are correct. I did read the Harry Potter series. Now I understand the whole camping out thing as well. A cute vampiire will do it every time!

Galena, vampire smut..LOL...there is plenty of that floating around...PNR is really more of a general term, because its not always about vampires. They are simply romance novels with supernatural characters like vampires, werewolves, demons, fairies, etc (pick your poison..LOL). Sometimes the lines are blurred and people would mix it up with urban fantasy books, because most of those will have the same elements. I guess the major difference PNR focuses more on the love story, while urban fantasy is more story driven, and will keep the same charaters throughout the series.

hehe. I always find the term paranormal romance misleading. why do they not just call it vampire smut. hehe. being teen books, these are short on smut, but very sweet.

I find them appealing because I enjoy really cheesy vampire books. and when it comes down to it, yes, they're cheesy, but they're really quite sweet too.

Thanks for the response. Are the books really more about the relationship than the whole let me bite your neck and suck out your blood thing?
@Galena (9110)

very much more about the relationship. there's almost no "mealtimes" in the whole series. the fact they are vampires is more about their strength, speed, sparkliness* and a few more supernatural traits than it is about their dietary requirements. this particular group of vampires have what they describe as a vegetarian lifestyle. they hunt animals, not humans. and so their feeding doesn't come into the story much. mostly it's about the growing relationship between the two of them, and his efforts to keep her safe. in the first book, from a rogue pack of vampires that turn up, and in other books against a few other dangers. they are quite cheesy really, and very cliched, but fun, and sweet. and I will admit to more of a crush on Edward Cullen than is normal in a nearly 30 year old. (a crush which I don't have on the actor, although I think he'll play the part well) I am looking forward to the film, which isn't out for about a month in the UK. it looks very cheesy. but so are the books. *they are sparkly vampires. it's brilliant. the reason they don't go out in daylight is because they have sparkly skin, which would give them away as not human.

The vegetarian lifestyle may make the books more palatable for me. I'm going to jump in. Running up to the bookstore to pick up a copy. Thanks for your insights

I have no clue who Stephenie Meyer is, or what the books are. I can only guess by your discussion that maybe it's the Twilight series???

I kinda thougth so because I've been hearing a lot about this lately and I'm kinda in the dark about it. I don't normally read vampire stuff, I've got to be in the mood for it. But, now that I've been watching True Blood on HBO I might pick up this Twilight series - if I get the time...

That was my thought as well. I have a number of favorite authors who keep me in reading material. I picked up the book yesterday and I'm going to squeeze it in. Who knows, maybe I'll have another favorite to add to my list

I have read all the four Twilight series and I'm reading again the first book before I watch the movie. Stephenie Meyer is a superb writer. It's an unusual love story between a vampire and a human. It is different because the main vampire character is a "vegetarian" - meaning he does not drink human blood. It is not the usual gory vampire setting as perceived by some - the vampires here have no fangs and they walk in daylight. Ms. Meyer's Twilight series is a big hit here in the Philippines, well in Metro Manila mostly. It is read by teenagers and even their moms. Most who read the book are in "Twilight trance". The book has crossed beyond age borders among women here as in from teens to women in their 50s. A friend of mine loved the book so much, she bought a hard-bound copy of the book for souvenir and a paperbound book copy which she has read five times. Oh, and she is 51 years old.

The "Twilight trance" is happening in Southern California as well. That's what made me even consider reading the book. We're going to see the movie tomorrow.

I don't know whether you believe in Vampires existence on the earth or not but ask those who have practically experienced Vampires disturbing their life style in a large manner and let me tell you i am one of those guy. So by reading these series we gets an idea about how to deal with vampires and takings to tackle them.

if you can't beat em, join em. errrm. whatever vampires you're experiencing, are probably not much like most fictional vampires. if they're sparkly though, I want one. hehe.

No, I don't believe in vampires but if I did, I would definitely want to know the Cullen family.

I read the books completely by accident. I am the mom of 5 teenage girls who all love this series. I wanted to read one day and had read all the books I had from the library that week. My daughter had the third book in the series (Eclipse) and I just picked it up and started reading it. I read it in less than 2 days and I was hooked. I waited for 4th book (Breaking Dawn) to come out and I read that one. I then decided that although I knew what was going on in the books, there were some things that I didn't know why they happened, so I read the first and second books and then re-read the last two. I do not like vampire stories usually but the way Stephenie Meyer's tells a story is amazing. She has written a novel for adults that came out last summer called, The Host. It is about aliens and I wanted to see if her writing could get me as interested in a book about aliens (which I absolutely hate reading about, much more than vampires) as she did with vampires in the Twilight series. And I wasn't disappointed.......it was one of the best books I have ever read. I think it is even more of a love story than the Twilight books. It took a few chapters to really get into it and really understand what was going on but after that I just couldn't put it down. I cannot wait for her books that she is writing about Edward's point of view. The first book is going to be called Midnight Sun. It's nice that my girls and I have found something that we can all agree on and are very much so looking forward to seeing the movie. As the mom of teenagers it's nice to find a common ground and share the same interest in something. So, my advice would be to try the first book, "Twilight" and you will know within the first chapter or two if you will like it. If you don't like that one and want something geared a little more towards adults then try reading, "The Host". Happy reading!!!! :)

Thanks. That's exactly what I was hoping for. I've picked up a book a number of times that I didn't think that I would like just because I didn't have anything else to read and got hooked. I picked up Twilight at the bookstore today and am going to start it tonight. Thanks for the input

No, no, no,no LaurenInLA! You are not alone. I have never heard of the author or her books until just very recently with all the hoopla about the new movie coming out tomorrow; the movie name escapes me. One of the actresses in the film was on with David Letterman tonite. The clip shown on the show was interesting. I am 57 so I don't feel so bad that I haven't read the books. From what I see, the fans are teenagers, young adults, etc. I am intrigued to see the new movie. I might read the books. Might. Might not.

Hee, I feel the same way. Everywhere I turn people are talking about reading Stephenie Meyer. I keep saying I'm going to pick up the first one and give it a chance. Like you, I don't usually choose books about vampires but I'm thinking of making an exception just once.

Thanks for the welcome. That's my experience as well. Everyone in all age groups is talking about these books. I went to the bookstore last week and actually had a copy in my hand. At the end of the day, I just couldn't justify spending the money on a book about vampires and I left with another Luanne Rice book. Maybe I'll see the movie first. That's how I got into the Luanne Rice books. The movie opens tonight at 12:01 am and most of the theaters are sold out. People have actually been camping out since Sunday to buy tickets for this movie. Amazing.

I never liked Vampire books or romance books. My sister-in-law insisted I read Twilight so I humored her. I fell in love. The thing I like about the book is the characters are so well formed and the writing is so well done that it sucks you into the story. You care about the characters and you can relate to the main character. I am not a teenager as a matter of fact I am 32 and the mother of 2. The main character is the girl everyone feels they were in high school clumsy, plain, average. Yet she gets the inhumanly hot guy inexplicably drawn to her. Anyway that is my two cents.

Perhaps that's the appeal. That everyone can relate to her. Thanks for your comments

I have friends who claim to dis-own me if I don't read Twilight, but I'm sorry, I don't read love stories, granted it's about vampires, but it's a vampire love story, a TEENAGE vampire love story at that. See, I have a feeling there's going to be a great vamp-lit fan divide - Vampire Chronicles fans and Twilight fans. I'm no doubt one of the former. The reason I like the books is because it's a sort of dark-fantasy, I mean, who wouldn't want to live forever?? Not just that, but the main character (from The Vampire Chronicles) Lestat is very alluring, he goes places and does things that most can only dream of. Now, after saying all that, I have to admit that I will end up reading at least the first Twilight book, I can't knock it if I haven't tried it, right?
@Galena (9110)

I see no reason for there to be a divide. I'm a big fan of both.

I picked up the book yesterday but decided to see the movie first. The audience reminded me of the audiences that attended the Harry Potter movies in that there were people of all ages. I thought that the movie was well done..very little blood etc in it. Much less of a vampire story than a love story. I even talked DH into seeing it with me and quite honestly, we both enjoyed the movie. Most of the people that we talked to indicated that the movie followed the book closely and at the end, there's a clear opening for a sequel. I'm starting the book today

nope... i just heard of it last month, and people just started reacting to it when they heard there was a film... so nope... i read book one, what i find appealing, the bantering... the girl is smart enough, but the author has a really romanticized vampire in mind...

I don't care for sciene fiction, occult or werewolves. The movie, "Twilight," which is based on Meyer's book is opening tonight at the local movie theater and people have been camping outside the theater since Sunday to see the movie. In another group that I belong to, so many people seem to be raving about her books. Hoped that someone knew what all of the hype is about.

Count me in, Lauren. My sister's all wild about it, and is very excited about the movie that they made based on the first book, Twilight. She even has a crush on Robert Pattinson. For those who don't know, he is the one who will be playing the role of the vampire in the movie. I can't understand how or why she likes it so much. I mean pale-faced vampires? C'mon!... (pale-faced Harry Potter still is the best! lol)
