happy thanksgiving everyone

November 26, 2008 2:42pm CST
I just wanted to wish all my fellow Mylotters a very Happy Thanksgiving! I live in the UK at the moment where we don't celebrate Thanksgiving. Also, I am originally South African and we don't celebrate Thanksgiving their either. However, many years back I did spend a year in the US working as an aupair. I arrived in San Francisco in September 1992 - just in time to settle in and join in the family celebration. It was great, the house was decorated, the table was full of food and all the family came around for the day. In fact, it was just like Christmas for me. When Christmas rolled around, I worked out that (at least for the family I was working for) Thanksgiving was a bigger holiday than Christmas. Do you celebrate Thanksgiving? Are you American? Have you ever celebrated Thanksgiving? Did you also find that it is a bigger holiday than Christmas to Americans? Happy Thanksgiving All Violetdreams

Thank you. :) Yes I'm a born American, and I've celebrated it all my life. I've been up this morning before the sun just so I could get the 20 lb bird in the oven. LOL It will take about 6 hours to roast. My pumpkin pies are already in the fridge as well - I baked them yesterday. And I know I'm going to need a long nap later. LOL Thanksgiving is actually my father's favorite holiday. Mainly for the food and the fact that you don't have to decorate quite as much. So I'm sure today in his home (we can't celebrate together this year as I'm in another state) he will be enjoying his holiday dinner as well.

It is a nice celebration but I think it's most important to know the meaning of this celebration. Many people in america celebrate this but they celebrate this without understanding what it means.

No, like you I live in the UK and so we do not do the thanksgiving thing, I only really have found out what it all was by the discussions on here which is pretty ignorant of me really! I think that celebrating christmas is hard enough work for me, having two events to celebrate so close together would be a nightmare for me but it seems as though those that celebrate it are looking forward to it and I love reading about everyones plans.

Thank you for the Thankgivings wishes. Yes, I do celebrate Thanksgiving. I will be going to my mother's early in the day tomorrow, then my husband and I will be going to a family friend of his later in the evening. I usually do not cook for the holidays. There will be a lot of food, but I am not a big eater, so I will not get overstuffed. I think Christmas is a bigger holiday for children, because they are looking forward to gifts. I am not buying any gifts, I will relish in the true meaning of Christmas this year and go to church.

I live in Canada and we celebrate Thanksgiving but in October. That way we have Thanksgiving, then Halloween, then Christmas. It spaces things out a bit. In America it seems they are all spaced so close together. Some people think Black Friday should be an official holiday too.

Thank you! Happy thanksgiving back to you I guess! Thanksgiving isn't all that much of a big deal to me. I do live in the states. I think I don't look forward to it as much as I used to. I think because now instead of getting ready and going with my parents I have a family of my own to get ready. And we have to go to two houses instead of one. It's a lot of running around to do with 3 small kids.

I am from America...and do celebrate the holiday. What I really like is the fact that it's still about family...and being thankful..without the expectation of a gift....not that anyone really says they expect a gift at Christmas but it's kind of a given that you give gifts....so it's got the warmth and love of Christmas without the commercial flair.
