christmas gifts for grown children

This Christmas we are on a tight budget this year as are many folks out there. Normally we give our grown kids each a $50 gift card or check and the two grandbabies get about $50 of presents each. I don't think we can afford that much this year, even though I know it isn't a lot to begin with. What do you give your grown children? Or about how much do you spend on them at Christmas time?

I don't have any grown children, but I am a grown child. My mom gets us something for Christmas still, but it is usually something small. I think she tries to concentrate more on the grandchildren now.

Christmas isn't about how much the gifts cost. Spend as much as I can afford is the way I'd go. I don't have any grown kids. Only a 3 year old. So for a 3 year old, even cheap toys are great. :) We spent more or less $10 last year on her. A little bit more this year. Same goes with the adults.:P

I know it isn't about the amount deep down, but I feel guilty and sad for not being able to give them what I normally would. I loved your response though, thank you. It's fun when they are little like yours, enjoy every moment.

That's about all we can afford this year too. It's good to know there are other folks that only buy for the grandbabies. Thanks Lakota.

I have only one child who is now 19. being that he is in college this year i think i am going to give him a $200 gift card to do what ever he wants. and yes my budget is very tight this year just like everyone else. but this way i know he will have some money for himself while he is away at school.

If they are in the area, give them a "coupon book" and include things like babysitting the grand kids - I know, big hardship. Another thing, I've joined a Gifts in a Jar yahoo group and while most of the stuff I can't/won't do because it includes food I'm allergic to, you could make them those kinds of jars that would be different kinds of meals that they don't have to worry about. Here is their site: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GiftsInAJar/ (this is not a money making referal link, but a free yahoo group.)

That's a great idea, but they live in different states...both over 1,500 miles away. I like the group though, for other gifts. Thanks for the link and suggestions.

You can also put the stuff in an unbreakable container and they can either take them home or you can ship them.

They do understand, and are in the same financial spot as we are. We will try and do something, probably a cheap gift card. Thanks for your response.

We couldn't even come close to spending $50 for each of our children. We do however manage to buy them something. Usually we purchase household cleansers and sundries for them and place them in a box. Each item is wrapped and so is the box. We know they will use the items so we aren't wasting our money. The grandchildren all get a few gifts too. I am always on the lookout for a bargain. Only a few toys will be purchased and they must be under $10 each. I also make mittens for each of the grandchildren. This year I am making them all a knitted stuffed animal. If there is time I hope to make pillows with their names embroidered on them.

That's a good idea...except I'd have to ship it. We will probably just get a cheap gift card for them. There money is tight right now as well. At least we have the grandbabies done. Wish I could knit, lol. Thanks Elusive.

Yes, I'd think the car would be birthday and Christmas, lol. You are a great mom. I love gift cards, that way they can get what they need or want. Thanks meme. Huggers.

Adults don't get proper presents anymore we only buy for the little ones ,we spread the cost over the year we have six grandchildren so it is quite expensive we have spent about £100 on our youngest son who is fifteen. My husband has a a good job and it pays well so it is different for us but we still need to be careful. If you are on a pensions you would not be expected to pay out more than you can afford,if I was you I would talk to your family and explain ,they are probably in the same boat,as you, everyone is cutting back.Do what we do make sure the little ones have something nice and the adults understand. It works very well in our family as long as the little ones get enough the adults don't matter.
