Boy or Girl? Ways to Find Out

Singapore
December 2, 2008 5:50pm CST
There are many old wives' tales to predict whether you are carrying a boy or a girl when you're pregnant. Fr instance, if you like to sleep on your right side, you are having a girl, if you like to sleep on your left side you are carrying a boy. Tell me whether you have heard of any. Where did they originate from? Just for fun!

The old one I used to do when I was pregnant was hanging my wedding ring from a chain and suspending it over my stomach. If it goes back and forth it is a boy and if it goes around in circles it is a girl. It was correct 100% of the time! I think it is more than an old wives tale since it worked 100% of the time for me. Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

100% accuracy. I never knew that an old wives tales can be 100% correct. But it did for you. Thank you for sharing for findings.

Years ago we used to do the draino test at baby showers as a game. the old stlye crystal stuff, you would take a teaspoon of draion and add it teaspoon of the mom to be's urine and if it turned blue it was a boy and if it turned green it was a girl. it always works... it was really more science ( had to do with the ph balance of the urine. Then there was the wedding band test. you tied moms wedding band to a string and held it over her belly, if it swung vertically it was a girl and horizonally it was a boy... ( I think I got the direction correct) any h ow they were jsut fun to do... I am not sure where they originated from.

I have heard of the draino test before, but the results are often conflicting. I have also heard the colours turnign out to be brown or yellow and many others. So does it still work? LOL! I have also heard of the wedding band test. I think it is quite fun.

Yeah, But remember that ultra sound are not 100% everytime. My daugher had two that said it was a gril (one at 20 weeks and one at 26 weeks)and then a 3rd at 34 weeks confirmed it was a BOY!! I also have had many clients over the years be shocked in the delivery room that the ultra sound was wrong...

This one may be true for all you know. I slept a lot when I was pregnant with my daughter, more than usual. I initially attributed it to my hormonal changes. But never thought that there is an old wives tale on it. LOL!

hi there, i have heard some of these talks too. the oldies would say that if the mothers stomach is rounded the baby is going to be a girl while if it is quite pointed then that is too be a boy. other would even say that is the woman looks beautiful during pregnancy then it is going to be a girl and if she looks ugly then its is gonna be a boy. well this are just talks it is not proven scientifically. happy mylotting!!!

There seems to be some conflicting tales about this one. But I have heard of both and it's not surprising since all of these are not scientifically proven. LOL!

Hi Sydney! Here are two folk lore from my country that I have long heard of, I just can't remember where and how exactly: If the armpits darken while you're pregnant, it's a boy. Here's another one, if the growing belly is high and juts out sharply (as against a softly rounded shape) it's a boy! Happy mylotting!

Hi Nona, I have not heard of the armpit one and will take note of that if I get pregnant again. But I have heard of the belly shape one, which is pretty common. Thank you for responding!

hi, Sydney i have heard that if the preggy mom appears to be prettier than usual -- or blooming-- she is carrying a girl. if the preggy mom looks, well, not so pretty -- big nose, dull skin -- she is carrying a boy. i do not know where that came from but it is how we predict the gender of the baby anyway. have a nice day!

I was told that if the baby is carried high it is a girl and if it is low it is a boy. Also if it is past the due date, it will be a girl or if it is on time or a little early, it will be a boy. I heard this first when I was a teenager, but I have no idea what they originated from and for some silly reason, it seems to be right.

My aunt says that girls need to preen themselves before coming out, thus taking a long time. My daughter came early. My sister's son came late. That one did not work for us, I guess.LOL! Thanks for your response, suspenseful!

Hello SydneyHazelton, It depends on how your belly looks like. If it is round, most probably a girl. If a pregnant lady doesn't like to see baby girl, means that you are going to have a girl and vice versa. That's all I know but not too sure from where it originated.

HI gr8life, That's something new I have not heard of. You mean to say the pregnant woman do not like to see a baby girl will get one? LOL! So interesting.

Take a piece of thread. Wind it around something and dangle it over the woman's belly. If it turns one way, it's a girl, the other, it's a boy but I don't remember which is clockwise and which is counterclockwise. Probably comes from dousing. If you carry high, a girl. Low a boy. Probably because girls weigh less than boys.

I have heard of the dangling ring myth. I can't remember about the direction of the ring or needle as well. Some also says if it goes back and forth is a boy and in circles a girl. Can be confusing all these myths. As for the position of the baby, this is the first time I hear the reason why girls are carried high and boys carried low, sounds plausible. Thank you for your response!

In my country, some people say that a round tummy means it's a girl, while a pointed one means it's a boy. You can also count numbers, which is very complicated because it uses a different kind of calendar. I always look at the stomach shape and it's been very accurate so far.

Many people believe in this method very much. So far, it's been true for me and my sis. Thanks for your response!

They say that if you are beautiful while pregnant, then it is a girl. If your neck and armpits darkens during pregnancy then, you're having a boy. I am not sure where these came from but i know them because they were passed on to me from my grandmother, then to my mom. There are times that they are right but there also times that it is the opposite of what they say. I think that they are just circumstantial.

hi Sweetie, There's an equal chance of getting it right or wrong, so no one actually takes note of them.

I've heard about hanging your wedding ring above your belly - circle move it's a girl, back and forth - it's a boy. But what I paid attention to, is that a pointed belly has inside a boy, and a big, round one,it's a girl. Even when you look at the person from behind, if you can not tell she's pregnant, that's a boy. If you can see she's larger than she was, than it's a boy. Works every time...

i have heard that when you have morning sickness it is said to be a girl and if you dont have its a boy,i think this is very much true because i had morning sickness when i was pregnant and very recently gave birth to a girlbaby.some people even say if your carrying a girl your tummy would be very big and if its a boy your tummy would be small and flat.

The morning sickness myth applies to me. I had terrible morning sickness. There was once I vomitted when I was eight months into my pregnancy, but that could be triggered by motion sickness as well. I had just eaten and took a cab ride home. The cab driver was driving like crazy. When I got home, I vomited all that I ate earlier. But that was just one incident. Generally, I had to take medical leave for more than a term in school because of my morning sickness. That terrible...

Well I am 37 weeks pregnant right now, and I know that I am having a boy, and people that I have never met before i my life all seem to know that it's a boy! Everyone of them say something like, you carry low, youre not wide, things like that. Maybe they are all just really good guessers? I don't know. I don't really look too much into it, ha ha. But I am happy (and anxious now at this point) that I am having a boy! :D

There are so many folklore sayings on this subject across cultures. The one I heard commonly is if the stomach protrusiuon points upwards it is a body and vice versa. Whatever be the truth, some people can predict accurately. Few days ago, One women told me " Wow!two boys." I have never even talked to her before that and she told me on seeing my elder son and myself being pergnant at about 7 months. Another saying with some scientific basis is that it is a boy if the physical intimacy occurs after ovulation and vice versa in case of girls. So many people says so many things but some of the things seem to be true.

Congratulations! I didn't know that you're pregnant. So have you found out if what she said is true? LOL!

A Chinese birth chart supposedly predicts the gender of a baby with a 93 percent accuracy. Find out if legend has you having a boy or a girl.
• Singapore
5 Dec 08
I thought the Chinese birth chart has 99% accuracy. There seems to be a strict way to ensure the result is consistent. You need to have the Chinese calendar in the first place. And there are some other rules to follow I believe.

Interesting things I must say as I know that if you loose your beauty its a girl because girls steal their mothers beauty. But many small kids can guess what the baby is. I used to do that. I would see a pregnant woman and say you are having a boy or a girl and I was always right I know that some of my relatives avoided me because they didnt want to be told. When my uncle got married after their honeymoon they doped by and I looked at his wife and I said next time when you come bring the girl and they all looked at me and said what girl and I said well she is having a baby and its a girl. No one knew she was pregnant not even her. When I was pregnant with my first people at work (we had people from every posible country) would do their things and they all said it was going to be a girl. They gave me a baby shower and they got me stuff for a girl well it was a boy :))))) Now with this one no one dares to do anything.

That's really interesting. My cousin was also able to tell when he was young. My aunt has gone to the toilet to see and do the pregnancy test. Once she came out, my cousin said "There is a baby, right?" He was still young to even understand what a pregnancy test kit is. I do believe kids can tell.

Not sure where it orginated from, but I was told that you carry a boy low and a girl high. I also heard that if your skin clears up real pretty you will have a boy. If you skin does not look like is glowing you are having a girl. Also heard if you dream its a girl then it will be a boy and vice verse.

I seemed to carry all my boys like a basketball right in front. I gained more weight with my daughter and seemed to carry her wider in the tummy. HOWEVER, they say (an ultrasound tech told me) that it seems if you 'do it' mission style, it will be a girl.

Yup! My aunt used to say that girls need to do a bit of makeup before coming out. So they take longer to come out. My daughter was surprisingly early. My sister was super late, she had to be induced to come out. My sister has a boy and came later than expected date. Can't really tell, can we?
