1 in 5 Young Adults Has Personality Disorder, Study Finds.... I posted an article last month about suicide rates among teens. Yesterday on foxnews.com this new study comes out. Here is the article http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,460066,00.html What was even more alarming to me is that it's true! You see I spent the Thanksgiving holiday traveling to Texas with my husband and youngest son, who is currently in college. The trip was 19 hours each way. We had lots of time to catch up on what was happening in our daily lives. Thinking back, much of what my son was saying he was feeling and his friends were also experiencing went along with this study. The I was thinking about all the recent campus murders and the suicide discussion I started. Oh My Gosh it's true. I'm not always convinced with these studies but this one was real close to home. "For many, young adulthood is characterized by the pursuit of greater educational opportunities and employment prospects, development of personal relationships, and for some, parenthood," the authors said. These circumstances, they said, can result in stress that triggers the start or recurrence of psychiatric problems. I believe our young adults are suffering from the overwhelming stress of a society targeted toward the material things in life. What do you think, am I right? Is it the money? Have we lost our parenting skills? Are we producing weak minded adults?

yeah i mean parents are suppose to help them but most just seem to have them and just not care about them afterwards and figure everyone else would.. i do think that some kids even with the best parents will turn out screwed up but i think thats rare but happens

I think as parents we are responsible for life... Maybe not foot the bill but to at least point out things and encourage them to do what is right.

This is really some food for thought! I never knew that the generation today is so proned to psychiatric problems. I mean, we were stressed out too when we were going to school. And we learned to deal with it and came out stronger. Now a days, kids seems to think the end of the world everytime they are dealt with a stressful event. Instead of finding ways to resolve the stressful situation, they tend to brood over it and get depress over it easily. Thus leading to the many psychological problems of today. You have a point about producing weak minded adults. The question is, is the environment they are growing up in really all that different compared to when we were kids? We still have home work. We still have mean friends and teachers. We still have datelines for projects. And we still stress over exams. What exactly have changed that made our kids so resilient to stress in the past as compared to today?

I think the shift in values has made it a huge problem for all of them. The ones with strong values have to struggle through the maze of those without and still hold firm. That wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so important that they survive the college years to get the credential to move forward you know. I think the liberalism and extreme lack of moral fiber spills over and into all of their lives, causing different struggles that we didn't have to even consider.

Shift in values? You mean kids are not taught values that were taught to use in the past when we were kids? I mean, they too go thru a period of study, play and then graduation followed by integration into the work place. Other than having more gadgets to play with and more crappy MTV to watch, what has changed? Teachers still teach. Students still have home work to deal with. Exams are still used as a mode of grading a student's skills at reproducing and applying what they learn. What has changed so much that they cannot even handle a little stress?

I have no idea but it's very disturbing. I do think that we have it too easy and that may be a factor somehow.

your right i think about the parenting in most cases. kids today are exposed to to much violents and i think they get immune to such things. plus most kids today is with this "its all about me and my happiness" attitude.

Of course our children have this, they are teenagers. Our medical people have just found something else to label about the human condition. At the teen years humans are just starting to find themselves and to form into the strong, smart people they will be as adults. This is like a butterfly forming, it's a lot of work and painful. They need our help, love and understanding, not new labels.

I don't know Pat, I don't think it's just a label. I got to see it first hand. What a shock to see and hear how much change has taken place in just a short time with my own son. They need our help more than ever. I think the shift from love and good living to money and fun living has hurt them all. This mentality affects even those who's parents didn't raise them up that way.
