Public Prayer

Here is a guy with a unique Idea. The first amendment guarantees freedom of expression that allows almost anything to be called art and be protected. It also guarantees the right to free exercise of religion which is routinely ignored by courts who don't want us offending people. This guy protected one freedom with another. See what you think. http://blog.beliefnet.com/idolchatter/2008/11/prayer-as-public-art-nyc-insta.html

That is awesome! Inspired even! Artists insist that the only definition of "art" is "what the artist does". If art is what the artist does then they cannot claim that his isn't art. The same should be said for nativity scenes and other art on public property.

I've always felt the objective of art was to entertain. Movies that get great reviews from the art crowd are bombs no one wants to see while something as well done as Independence Day is treated as garbage by the professionals makes billions in sales and is replayed until the DVD breaks in peoples homes. We the people decide what is art and what is junk. The sooner people accept that the sooner the government can stop financing "piss Christ" with the tax dollars of Christians.

I think it is a great idea. The only problem I see with it is the art is simple, easy to understand, it is not offensive, vulgar or repulsive so how can something that beautiful be considered protected art by today's standard?

Like so many things we have allowed an untalented, tasteless, vulgar and profane elite dictate the rules. Art is defined by everyone and a lot more people see art in a nativity scene than see art in a woman defecating in front of an audience. It's time we took a stand against the government giving people like her hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants while banning Christmas displays.

Of course this begs the question which is more artistic, the prayer booth or a nativity scene, but that is like thinking and thinking just wont fly in government circles.

I remember going to a Christian School that got the Keep Christ in Christmas theme displayed at the local shopping mall by making it an art project and displaying the best student art.
