Face-Off becomes a reality! It's an amazing progression in medical procedures!

A woman in Ohio has recieved a new face and this marks the first ever face transplant in the USA! She had 80% of her face replaced by the use of facial tissue from a dead female donor. She now has to wait to ensure the transplant tissue is not rejected but what an amazing procedure! Here is the link to the news story: http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/world/5218616/hospital-does-face-transplant/ I have not been able to find any pictures of this case and the woman's name is being withheld for now. Personally I find it fascinating and wonder where we may be another 20 years from now. Brain transplants? Does it amaze you to read about progress like this? Do you have any opinions on where we may progress to in the medical/surgical field in the near future?

Why did she get it? Was her face disfigured or did she just want a new face? I think it is just gross.

They are still holding back detailed information for now, but it was definitely not a cosmetic procedure. It is a case of disfigurement and the repairing of damage from a trauma or something. They held a press onference on it yesterday so hopefully we will know more soon. It is kinda gross on some levels, but in this case, it has given a woman a chance at normality that was never available to her before.

I think that medical science is fascinating as hell. Where it will be, what advances we will see in the next 20 years, who knows. Now the brain transplant thing is a little scary, if you ask me. There would definitely have to be some kind of screen process for people who wanted to donate theirs, wouldn't you think?

lol. 'Screen' is one I wouldn't have picked up anyways Bo as it is arguably acceptable usage, but the picture in my mind of you scrambling to restate the word screening first is fantastic! It is certainly fascinating to see how far we have come in the field of medical science, but there are still so many base advancements that continue to elude us. We still haven't managed to cure the common cold for one! As for brain transplants, I think we will see more of a focus on artificial enhancements to existing brain matter rather than moves to transplant an entire brain. There are just too many unknowns surrounding brain function so even effective screening would be a near impossibility at this time. It is unlikely you or I would ever see something like this in our lifetime anyways. But who knows what the distant future may bring? Thanks for the response and the laugh too by the way.

*LOL* Didn't scramble, really. Just saw it as I hit the button, waited for it to post then immediately reposted. Took all of 3 seconds. I didn't really figure you could read it, type your response, and comment on it before I did.

It certainly is amazing and i found the article to be of great interest as well. The benefit for people who have had face scarring due to burns, other injuries as well is tremendous. The improvements/progress of the medical field in the next few years according to me is going to in quantum jumps. What with the transplant technology seeing great improvements, stem cell therapies, the genetics. I'm sure the next 10 years will see tremendous improvements. There is a down side at the same time of people using these technologies for personal benefit. For ex. People going for face transplants to get new identities, like Face off. Like the crimes under the guise of organ donation, one could have a lot of issues if not controlled well enough.

Good morning alok. I wish there were more details, but the article is still quite vague. Apparently there will be a news conference today and they will be sharing more information regarding this procedure so I will be looking out for any new releases from tomorrow. From what I have managed to research so far, it does seem that many people are using these types of breakthroughs for cosmetic gain mostly, but it is very promising to see that people that have been attacked by animals, or suffer facial traumas can have a chance of outward normality again. I am trying to get my head around the parameters they would have to meet when selecting a suitable donor! Hopefully the "Face-Off" movie type scenarios will be a long way away and it will be used for beneficial purposes mostly. It's a scry thought though and we could have very dangerous people constantly changing their identities. The future is going to bring us some amazing advancements, no question. It seems like only yesterday that they were releasing news of hand transplants and now they have progressed to full faces already! Thanks for the response.

I hope you share those details of the conference James. It most certainly would be of interest to me. The parameteres aspect is intriguing, and i suppose it will evolve as the transplants progress. Now whether this has any ethics issues or any objectionable concerns, time will tell. And a very good morning to you as well.

I think there is a movie called Face off with Nicolas Cage and John Travolta. I wonder if that is where they got the idea to try this surgery?

I think so too! What's really odd though is that I've not read anything more about this case since I put up this discussion? There's no question that some will use it for less than desirous reasons, but overall it offers a lot of hope for many people that have suffered greatly and never had options like this in the past. It'll be interesting also to see how much further something like this will progress over time. Thanks for the response mtdewgurl.

It really is amazing. I'm sure, at this rate we shall be able to extend our lifespan t0 10-150 yrs by 2025 and discover the God through science by 2080-2100.

I hope so too suruchi. Living until 150 years of age isn't going to be much of an achievement if our quality of life is no good and we are hounded by issues such as these and many others. It would be one heck of a horribly long time of it if these things aren't fixed in parallel!

i agree it's more than amazing that the way of thinking of humans has reached that level of creativity....but messing with what god made perfectly doesn't has the wonderful result you think it has...i am a pharmacist and i can tell you that most of we come up with in either pharmacy,or medicine or any of that ends up to be 90% theoritically successful and to a very very very limited extent practically making any sense but most people don't realize that as they only see the results without knowing anything about the procedure or the many stages during which the idea has come up in,the human mind is very very creative but there's always a very limited ability to apply our theories practically.......to answer your question, yes there will be definitely a great progress in the future mostly based of the progress we already reached now,we will just keep moving up to the next levels gradually....to a certain level where we will be speechless and unable to understand the secrets of nature and the ability of God in a more detailed way....again the human ability is limited,james...but we only haven't reached the highest level allowed yet...which will be the furthest limit we won't cross......but it's wonderful that we try and it's a must and a duty,it's probably the aim of our life or maybe just a way to understand it closely.

I'm glad for this woman. I have a disability, but I don't look different. I can't imagine being disfigured. We are such a looks centered cultured species that it must be very difficult to undergo such a thing. I hope all goes well for her. I'm excited to see what this leads to. I hope it will lead to move more procedures that help humanity.

Unfortunately we ARE very focused on extrenal appearances cripfemme. I am very happy for her also and I am looking forward to reading more about this case when they release further details. It must have been a very long and painful procedure and she has a long way to go too. Tissue rejection is a major concern for one. I hope to see more news on it soon which I will of course share here. It is a significant medical breakthrough that can help significiantly in the future! Thanks for the response.

great improvements we see here in medical discoveries. it will help a lot of people. hopefully this knowledge will not be misused by other or some people for some bad purposes. as mentioned above like we see in movies. but we should not think more of the negative things , cause the positive things still outweigh the negative things it will bring.

I have the same concerns hotsummer. Every advancement such as this one has tremendous potential to positively change the lives of many people, but there are always those looking to exploit the same advancements for montetary or negative gains. Focusing on the multitude of positives is the right mindset to have, but I also hope that measures are put in place that protect these findings from misuse as much as possible. Thanks for the response.

lol. There are very few details so far SaintAnne so the link I provided is very tame for now. I can imagine that this woman is unbelieveably sore though and in places she didn't even know could be sore! It is an amazing advancement in medical procedures and will give her a chance to lead as normal a life as possible from a physical outlook perspective. Hopefully there will be more info released soon as I still don't even know what her original status was yet. I am assuming some sort of face trauma from an accident or maybe an animal attack or something? Thanks for the response.
