Shortening Substitues

For Christmas I'm making my mom some homemade Peanut Butter Cups. The recipe I'm using calls for shortening. I'm wondering what would be a good substitute for the shortening. All of the shortening substitutes I can find are for cakes and pies. What would work best in Peanut Butter Cups? In the recipe, the shortening is melted with chocolate chips to create the chocolate coating for the peanut butter.

You can use butter or margarine but the consistency might not be the same. I have used them interchangably but I think you are better off using the shortening if that is what the recipe calls for. This is really a good recipe I think I made it before.

I use paraffin in my chocolate to make a chocolate coating that does not melt as easily. I have always used that instead of shortening.

Do you know what it's made out of?

I am not aware of any substitution for shortening but I make Reese cups and I just melt my chocolate and add parifin. I buy it at a local candy shop here and it comes in a baggie already shredded up but you can buy it at the grocery store in a bar and break it up yourself. As far as I know the shortening is only used to thin the chocolate for easier coating. You will have the same results with a small bit of parifan. Just be careful no to overdo it or it will taste waxy. The parifin also makes them look better and not so easy to melt in your hands either. You could possibly use unsaltd butter but I'm not sure how it would work. I have never used it. Good Luck and I'll take a few! LOL

Thanks! That sounds great! I'll have to check it out! Do you know what the ingredients are by any chance? I'm cooking for my mom who has a lot of severe food allergies, which is the reason I need to substitute the shortening in the first place!
