Does chewing gum prevent "onion tears"?

I have read on the Internet that chewing gum while chopping onions prevents your eyes from watering. Have you ever tried that? Did it work? If it did, have you got any idea why?

Hi there, I'm not sure if that'll work with onions. I know chewing gum when you're on a plane could help equalize air pressure in your ears. Since you want to know about onions, a tip I picked up before is biting on an unlit matchstick. Apparently, the sulfur in the match keeps you from tearing up. Why not try both to find out?

I haven't heard the one with the matchstick yet. Have you tried it? Another one I heard was chopping onions under water and breathing with your mouth rather than your nose. I tried the one with the water and it works. It also works if you put the onion in the fridge and keep it there for a few hours before chopping it.
