Phone cords.

Why are phone cords from those now "old fashioned" phones with the cord always curly? They always got twisted up. But why were they curly? No other household appliance that I can think of has a curly cord. Do you ever find yourself wondering this type of thing? Or are you too busy with your glamorous life? I'm in a basement right now. I was deeply moved by a Dr Seuss book just an hour ago. Well actually it's "Hooray for Diffendoofer Day" and it was actually made after Dr Seuss died, and he had notes about this book he never finished and some other guys finished it. It's about celebrating creativity and individuality and such and that's like my theme kind of.

I usually hate this curly wire getting entangles and going out of shape.May be they are intended to stretch to a convenient distance.I just do not use it anymore.Cordless is my choice always.Very very convenient.

Oh, I've got it. Yeah. So if it was a not-curly cord, it would form a long puddle of cord on the floor and it would dangle everywhere. The cord snaps back. Well, now I need another mystery to solve.

The cord is curly on those old phones so that people could stretch the cord when they needed to. Making the cord curly allows for the cord to pull tight when not in use and stretch when needed. Could you imagine how tangled the cord would get if it was just a straight cord as long as the curly cord could stretch?

I guess if the cord was straight then it would just lay all over the place in a pile.

Hi Sheepie, I have often wondered about those curly phone cords, it use to really annoy me when I have to uncurl them each time I use the phone, it is much better now as I have a cordless phone. Tamara

Hi there! Yeah, I think it is curly so that it will have a spring effect, stretch-able enough when being pulled and return to its original position when not in use. That way, the cord will not entangled or just spread on the floor or else you have to re-coil the cord manually every time you use the phone. A tedious job to do.

Those things used to get on my nerves. They would twist all up and you could barely get to where you are going with them. I hate it when the vacuum cleaner cord does the same thing.

Our phone still has a curly cord - and it's very handy, because the spring effect stops it hanging on the ground! That way, you can go in the next room and it will stretch. I often wonder all kinds of useless things - even in my glamorous life, it's still interesting to ponder on the inexplicable ...

I remember my childhood days when the phones are without curly wires. Then they are like ordinary wire just long enough, but sometimes curl up due to our mishandling of receivers. And to straighten up was a tough task.I think to avoid that the department is issuing curled wires.LOL!

Now that's a good question. Why did they always make those old phone cords curly? Must have been an extra step to do that (yea, obviously I wonder about things like that as well..like I sometimes wonder where the old saying came from about how a fool and his money are soon parted. If he or she was such a fool, how did they get the money in the first place?) And yea, that's a great Dr. Seuss book. Have a great New Year.
