Quitting your job during a recession

Has anyone ever quit their job during hard times? My husband is thinking of quitting his job, because the working conditions are so bad. I posted before about how we're living in India in a big house with the CEO, and all the coworkers from my husband's company. It's terrible because we are forced to pay a lot of money for the awful food that the cooks make and my husband wasn't paid at all for almost 3 months. We just got the October payment yesterday! We are still owed for Novemeber and December. And the CEO thinks he can just call my husband to come upstairs and work at 1 am just because they live in the same house. There is a potential job offer some where else, but it hasn't come through yet. We have kicked around the idea of doing online freelance work (my husband is a translator), but with the economy so bad, I'm wondering if we should take the risk of quitting. Any opinions? Woud you quit a horrible job in a tough economy?

WEll, right now I wouldn't but your Husband is a very smart man. I would come back to the States for one. Try to find a job here in the States as you do miss being here. He can translate for anyone here. Hospitals, Unions and way more. Applie for jobs online for him. And also ask your family if they hve any leads on a job. Even if he takes a paycut he will be happy. I would sooner be happy then make a whole lot of money. Someday's I don't like my Job but most day's I do. Good luck and have a good day. Your friend onlydia

Hi, onlydia. I have been applying for jobs for him. I always do! Most of his jobs he got because I applied for him.

You are very a smart woman. But in these times I think it would be best if you all came home. And see what you can do here. It will be gettting worse over sea's and I will worry about you. So stay safe. Your friend onlydia

If you are not getting paid on time I think you have all the reason to quit the current job. 1 month delayed payment is already bad. and you said your husband has not been paid for 3 months??? that's really bad. however i would advise against working online full time. find a stable offline work then slowly move on to becoming a web worker. freelancing is not easy. when you are a freelancer you take on many hats. you become the billing department, the sales department, and the operations department. it really takes a lot of hardwork.

Hi, thanks for your response. My husband was paid 2 days ago for work he did in Septemeber. He is still owed for work in October and November. He thinks he will eventually get paid. It'sa new company, and they are having cash flow problems right now. Mostly, we're not happy with the way the company has treated us..not being honest, etc. As for the freelance, he has been doing part-time off and on for 6 months or so. The problem is, with freelance translation, you can't take on any big projects as long as you are working another job. If you do, it can be difficult to meet deadlines.

I would, but it's a bit easier for me because my husband loves his job, and they are a very stable company. I think your husband is going to need to quite his job - if they're not paying him at all, then how are you guys paying for food? I would apply for jobs, find a new place to live, and try to save up some money from his freelance work before moving on. If you have a plan in place, this can be done.

I do not think I would quit until I had a sure thing. One of former co-workers quit about4 months ago to go into buisness for himself. He was operating a marketing business inside his home. His wife kept her job at a bank. Apparently he called my supervisor last week to ask for his old job. It just so happen that the company decided not to fill his old position so it is still vacant. I'm hoping we can hire him back he was an excellent worker.
