Overeating and Underweight

I like to eat. I eat four or more meals daily for an average of 3000 calories per day and yet I'm still skinny. I'm a 6'1" male and I only weigh 160 pounds. I told a nutritionist about my calorie intake and she said, "...eat another 1000 calories..." It's hard. I know obescity is a national health issue and maybe I should count my blessings. I have overweight friends who have back problems and one was even rejected from an amusement park ride because the harness wouldn't fit over him. But being underweight is a problem too. All my life I was always the skinny guy. The easy target for the other kids to pick on. Those chairs in school were always so hard on my boney bottom, it hurt. Bumping into a wall or corner and nearly fracturing a bone and getting brused hips or chins. Competing for the attention of the one you like while she's looking at the football players. It's tough. Everyone always said, "Wait till you get older", and I've been waiting. I'm older now and I've only gained about five pounds in the last ten years. I eat bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, toast and cereal for breakfast. I'll usually have a hamburger and large fries around lunch time. Then I'll have a snack and munch on pototo chips. I'll eat large portions of dinner and make sure I have dessert. Then I'll have a snack before bed and usually get up in the middle of the night for a midnight meal (not just a snack, but another whole plate or burger). I eat about every three hours. I count calories and fat content. I've tried protein shakes, weight lifting, being lazy, I've even tried a beer diet. Nothing works. All I do is burn calories. I swear, if my stomach growls, I'm like, "there goes another pound". Well, maybe my metabolism will slow down one day. Until then, I'll have to keep eating just to not lose weight. Most people with weight issues are on the heavier side of the charts, but if you're like me you know what it's like to be on the other extreme.

Wow, I have had the exact same problem. :D It sounds to me that you have tried "everything". But have you stuck to it? Weight lifting IS a really good way to gain some extra good pounds. But to keep it simple, to gain weight one must eat more than one spends on energy, right? As I read your post, what you have ate is fast carbs which goes through your body... fast. It is like you ate 2 pounds of sugar every day, those calories are worth nothing if none of it builds the body up. Calories are just a measurement for energy in food, but the body also have to break the food down. You should aim at eating six times a day with what is considered good food, that is hard! I know. But it's an aim, if you can't fulfill it every day, have a weight gainer shake, but don't rely on it. A good rule I use is to look for slow carbs, a lot of protein and vegetables in a meal. 3000+ calories should be enough for you, I don't believe in less, you are quite tall. Those are still a good goal, but you have to fill them up with the right ones. Hope this helps you get... bigger. :)

Wow. What haven't you tried? Have you tried swimming? They say that when you stop swimming, you'll surely bloat up! I do have a friend like you too. She's too skinny, as in malnourished skinny, she tried everything but still her weight won't increase. I guess if you've done everything, all you can do is truly just wait it all out.
