Question about the strike on Gaza

I pointed this out in another topic but I thought it would make for a good discussion. Can someone explain to me how exactly they think that this clearly disproportionate war on a country led by a group that has been labeled a terrorist organization by several nations... that has made it crystal clear that their rocket fires and violent resistance are going to continue despite how hard Israel hits them... can anyone explain to me how this is going to solve anything? Israel says it wants to "teach Hamas a lesson" and it wants "quiet." Well, as I have said, I really don't think Hamas is going to be quiet any time soon. If there was a chance for quiet, they would be quiet by now. Can you really teach Hamas a lesson by killing them and innocent civilians in the process? Isn't that just going to cause more people to be so enraged and hopeless that they continue the cause of Hamas? Isn't it just going to up recruitment for suicide bombers and people ready and willing to smuggle in more rockets and fire away at Israel soil?

Well how is it "disproportionate"? When it comes to war you either fight it or you don't. THey shot over a bunch of rockets killing people.....there is not a rule saying the other side can only do the same. Heck if that was the case we would have just stole some airplane and flew them into buildings in Afghanistan. In war you throw what you got at the other side, who ever has the most wins. Very sad but true. This has been going on for forever it seem like between these two. Plus you add in that IRan has promised several times to "wipe Israel off the map"....can you really blame them for being a bit jumpy. They are surrounded by enemies. It is my personal opinion that neither can live in peace with the other. Humas and other nations have made it their mission to get rid of Israel....Israel has made it their mission to stay and fight (and insitgate some of this stuff too). Neither side has been all good or right in this over the years.I have no idea what the UN or any other nation thinks they can do to make lasting peace between them. Only they can make lasting peace when they are ready and unforunately they do not seem ready. So therefore I think the only way it is going to be over is when one side wins. Either Humas takes out Israel and its over or Israel takes out Humas and its over. But at the end of the day I do have to say it is really none of my business nor that of my government. I am hoping that we stay out of it. It probly is not likely.....we are known for sticking our noses where it does not belong. But I think we have enough to worry about right now without dragging ourselves into this mess.

Name me a war that has been "proportionate"? It is not the nature of war. My only advice to that is if you are a smaller country without a lot of technical weapons do not pick on a country that does have them.....you will lose and lose big. It is like throwing rocks at a bear and then being surprise when the bear attacks and kills you.

There is no such thing as a nice war, or a proportionate war. You fight a war to win it. If I'm in a fight, I'm not going to base my response on how many times I was hit or how hard, I'm going to fight using what ever means are at my disposal to win the fight and stop whatever agression is being used against me, in short there is no such thing as a "fair" fight. It is not about apearing compassionate or politicly correct or being "the nice guy", it is about defending one's self. I'm not going to lay down and allow my self to be beaten up because I'm concerned about my proportionate response and I doubt, when examined at this level, anyone else would either.

the same argument could be used in any war situation.

Not really, most wars are with rational governments and normal militaries, not a "rational government" vs a terrorist organization.

But how is Israel defending itself when it is so obvious that the devastation of the war is going to add on to the cause of Hamas and Islamic militants and even up recruitment?

Many of the participants in this discussion overlook a very pertinent fact and that is Israel has repeatedly ignored and literally violated the resolutions of the U.N.. This can never be condoned. And Israel dares to do this because it has the unbridled support of the U.S.. It is no secret that there is a very powerful lobby in the US which has always been influencing the US govt's policies. Israel is a small country inabited by brilliant people. They have most number of Nobel Lauriates. If they had chosen the path of 'live and let live' policy, the world would have been different. Israel's arrogance is unbearable. Israel must understand that no amount of force can suppress a people's desire for liberty life.

The evidence against Israel is unbearable, protests of Israeli citizens and Jews throughout the world are abundant... and yet Israel is so arrogant that they have a mandated draft for every Israeli citizen and imprison anyone who objects to the violence in Palestine and refuses to serve. Every peacebuilding organization I have seen is appalled by Israel's war crimes, illegal occupation of the West Bank, blockade of Gaza, and inflicted poverty on the Palestinian people.

I think that Israel is doing the right thing because i doubt any diplomatic solution will work, and if it does, hammas will start kidnapping people to use as hostages because they will see that israel is willing to negotiate, so it will just make the matters worse, because when you negotiate with terrorists they will take advantage of it. besides the military strike might make the people in gaza to stop supporting hammas because of all of the problems its causing them.

The people of Gaza are only going to continue to support Hamas more because they see first hand how unfair the war on them is and they are so desperate to stop their poverty and oppression that they want to do everything they can to stop their oppressors. They aren't just going to sit around and let Israel do what it wants with them. They already saw what that did during the occupation. There is a diplomatic solution that will work, and that has everything to do with the economy of Gaza and agreeing to give them the right to their own borders if the people of Gaza vote to put the PNA back in power.
