I only butter toast before I toast it & add jelly. Otherwise I butter bread before I add jam. It's rare that I'd do it on a sandwich unless I was out of mayo.

I like my toast plain. I am not a fan of butter so I could eat my toast and sandwiches without any garnish.

When i was growing up my mom buttered every sandwich we had...it didn't matter what was on it: tuna, pb&j, lunchmeat.....every sandwich. The only thing I butter now for myself is toast with peanut butter (like you mentioned)..I do like to butter my toast first. When my kids were younger we lived with my parents for a few years and I have twin boys who have the butter fever!!! They like butter on all their sandwiches...it is kind of like they use it in place of mayo or mustard. My husband and I think it is gross but if that is how they like it then that is fine. Oh, and my mom always said that they put butter on the bread because the bread was alot drier long ago and there really wasn't mayo or salad dressing like there is now.

I have always buttered my toast before putting anything on it. But I do not like to do this to my sandwiches. I do not like the taste of it then. I know alot of people that do butter their sandwiches.

I always butter bread or toast, weather I'm having a spread or not. My partner doesn't though. She only has buttered bread/toast if it has anything unspreadable on it, like sliced chicken for example. But I have to spread butter first. I find it a little dry without. Some may find that weird, but it was something we always did in my house while I was growing up, and I ain't changing now!

It depends. Now with real peanut butter the kind that is not hydrogenated and does not taste like crap, I will put it on the bread by itself. But with the horrible fake kind, I buttered the bread because then it disguised that horrible taste. We now just buy the real kind. I will butter the bread before making grilled cheese sandwiches. With meat or regular cheese, I will either butter the bread or spread it with olive oil or mayonnaise. I find the idea of having two slices of bread with just the meat and some tomato or lettuce and nothing else rather disgusting. But really we use soft margarine. Have you seen the price of butter lately? It is over $5.00 a pound.

I will sometimes butter my toast before I put peanut butter or jelly on it. For sandwiches though I only butter them if I am going to be grilling it to make a sandwich like a grilled cheese or a Reuben.

Yup, I usually butter my bread or toast, especially with the salted butter. Then only I will add on other fillings like eggs, tuna, sardines or jam. I don't take peanut butter though.
