Just try to give him a pure lemon juice mixed with warm water. That's helps him to feel better or if you have any herbal medicine for cough that would be okay too.

Hi Isabella, There is nothing worse than a child who can't stop coughing. You are absolutely right there have been warnings recently about the dangers of using cough medicines in young children. As others have already suggested putting a vaporizer in the room will help. Perhaps you could get yourself some essential oils, to put into his room as well. I "burn" or vaporize, both eucalyptus oil, and or menthol, (those are the two things, in "Vicks" vapo rub that give it that distinctive smell.) That really helps me when I have a cold. Also, you can try giving him a spoonful of honey or corn syrup as it will coat his throat and help stop the coughing. If I'm not mistaken, he is old enough to safely eat hard candies, if that's the case, sucking on a mint or a hard candy, can help us to stop coughing throughout the day. Good luck, and happy Mylotting!

I give my son warm tea with a spoon full of honey in it. The honey helps coat his throat and the warmth from the tea also helps the pain in his throat.

Cough medicine can be very dangerous for small children, and has been shown to be ineffective anyway, so it's not worth the risk. I would just put on a vaporizer, have him sleep propped up a little (put a pillow under his mattress), make sure he drinks lots of fluids, especially water and some warm drinks like broth. These things should help him feel more comfortable. If his cough is severe or is keeping him up at night or lasts more than a few days, take him to the doctor. Hope he feels better soon.
