Do you rate discussions which you start, or which you respond to?

January 23, 2009 5:09am CST
I never used to rate discussions. But now I feel that if I have started a discussion, then it is great when people have bothered to respond to it. So I tend to rate all responses as positive, unless I find them rude or offensive, then I don't rate them. How about you? Do you rate responses?

When I say our own discussions, I mean those we have started, not our own comments within the discussions. Glad to hear that you are a rater. Thanks for your response :)

Yes I rate the discussions that I respond to and also rate some of the responses made by other members to the discussion. The rating we have comes from the rating that other members give to our discussions and/or responses. If everyone made a genine rating of the posts then there should not really be a problem but I have seen where some members have said they do not rate at all. Mostly I only rate positive or leave the post alone. The member does not necessarily have to share my opinion at all but if they have given an honest opinion and exlained why they feel that way, then there are just as likely to get a positive rating from me as someone who agrees with me entirely. The only time I rate with a negative is if the response is abusive or offensive or way out of line. If the post was that bad, then I would be more inclined to report it to myLot admin to sort out. I think it is important that we acknowledge the effort members put into the discussions, whether it is one that they start or one that they respond to.

I totally agree with you oldboy. I don't rate people negatively when they have a different opinion, but there is really no excuse for being abusive. It's nice to reward each member for their efforts, so a positive plus to all who respond in this discussion. Thanks for your response :)

I rate everything as i read it.. that way i know what i've read and what i haven't and i dont double answer discussions. Its a good system and seems like a really good idea to me ;)

Thats a great way of keeping track. I sometimes find myself re-reading stuff which I have read before. I should make more of an effort to rate the comments whilst I read, not just the discussions I comment it. Thanks for your response :)

Yeah, icequeen123, I rate both the ones I respond to and the ones I start. Some discussions are sooo good that they deserve to be rated positively. On the other hand, a discussion has to be pretty far out for me to rate it negatively but I generally do not bother.
2 Feb 09
Glad to hear that you are a rater too roberten. I must admit that if I don't understand a discussion then I don't usually rate it. Thanks for your response :)

Hi icequeen, Yes I do rate positively to all. I rate those who respond to my discussion and I rate those whom I replied and ofcourse positively only. If I felt it is bad or rude I just leave that without rating and without responding. In the beginning I was also not aware the importance of rating and later one of my friends started a discussion about the topic then only I realised it is necessary to rate the discussions which we go through. So now I am doing it without fail.

I get a buzz when I see my star number go up, and feel sorry for people with low numbers as they must have some negative ratings. I am always interested to read comments from highly rated mylotters, so I feel rating is important. Thanks for your response :)

Personally I feel that it is our duty to go in and respond and Rate discussions. I make sure any Discussion I take time to respond back too to Rate, and also take time to Rate people that take time to respond back in one of my discussions as well. If you take time to notice someone in Rating them it will often come back Good for you as well.

Certainly if we have started a discussion then we should take the time to read the responses and rate them, and positively wherever possible. Thanks for your response :)

I rate everyone and if they are exceptionally rude I will still rate them. Mostly I rate everyone good. Because just because I do not agree does not make what another person is saying not bebeficial to another person.

Glad to hear that you are a rater, and I agree that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Thanks for your response :)

I often forget to rate discussions and responses. I do not rate my own discussions as I have never even thought of it. Once a discussion or response is good and remember to rate i definately do so.

I hope you remember to rate this discussion Thanks for your response :)

Hi there Ice Queen. I think rating the discussions i start is a great way of welcoming people that take the time to respond to them, and it will only encourage them to come back as i always rate them positive except if they post a referral link in my topic. I believe that they all have their right to an opinion and as long as they don't try to get my discussion deleted, and they show at least a slight trace of respect, they might as well receive a positive from me.

Hi there elitess. I agree with you. I like to rate discussions, especially those in which my friends have been involved, so it is a good way to benefit the mylot community. Thanks for your response :)

I try to remember to rate just before I add my comment, since the buttons are next to each other. But sometimes I forget. Not this time though, all of the comments in this discussion will be rated! Thanks for your response :)

Thank you very much for your kind reminding. So far I have not bother to think too much about the rating, though I remember I did marked several which really impressed me. Maybe I would pay attention to it and give more positive to most of responses I receive. Actually, I am not well informed of the rules and the rating system, though whenever coming across a discussion on this topic, I will stop to have a read.

I'm not sure if it has any bearing on our earnings, it would be interested to find out. Likewise, I will watch out for furtther information which anyone cares to post. Thanks for your response :)

So do I. I appreciate people drop in to respond to my discussion. I will read all the responses, but not until recently did I rate them. I come to rate them as positive with few exceptions. Also I am careful in choosing the best response, from which I do feel informative and helpful. I am happy to receive best response marks, and will continue to work hard for more.

I rate all my responses, it's the least I can do for them! I also rate the ones I respond to and if I have the time I'll go down the line and "+" each of their respondents--unless they're rude, then I'll just pass them by.

It's a shame when people are rude, there is really no need. It is nice when we are able to rate each other positively, it makes for a much better community. Thanks for your response :)

Hi icequeen! When I start a discussion I will rate the people that respond to them with a positive rating. I feel that since they took the time to be a part of my discussion that I want to show them the courtesy of rating them and responding to them. I appreciate that someone takes the time to participate in my discussions. Too many people just start a discussion and never bother to go back to them. I find that to be rather rude. Why bother to start a discussion if you don't want to respond?

I completely agree, a discussion should be just that, a discussion. If not then it is just a statement, or series of statements. Or else it is a question which is just left hanging. Thanks for your response :)

I am a newbie here and I hardly find time to spent much in myLot and rating discussions and responses is a new thing for me.I came to know about it recently some few days back and since then I had started rating discussions and responses. However,I don't rate those responses or discussions which I find it negative.I have also seen some people discussing about rating pictures too.Can we really rate pictures as well?Good day!

Yes I tend to rate my responses. Like you I feel they take the time to respond to my discussion the deserve to be rated. I also try to pick a best response If I feel someone has earned it. Sometimes somebody responds with one line and I usually don't rate these. For example: if they respond with that's good. How do rate that answer.

Sometimes it is difficult to rate short or one-liner responses, but I often take the view that they have spent time reading at least some of the discussion, so they deserve a rating. But generally a one-liner will not be earning a best response. Thanks for your response :)
