Do you think that the canned fruits out there that have the light syrup or even heavy syrup can still be considered healthy for kids? I think that fruit is great for kids but I do try to empty out some of that juice in the can in case there is too much syrup or sugar.

The only canned fruit that I give my kids is mandarin oranges and pineapple. The pineapple is in pineapple juice and the mandarin oranges are in light syrup. I drain the juice and syrup off of them both. They really don't need to be consuming the juice. It is still healthy even if it is in syrup, but not as healthy.

if you are looking for really healthy the fruit should be in their natural juices,

Well I know that the heavy syrup should be considered a no-no and the lite syrup isn't much better but if that is the only way you can get your child to eat fruit then it is better then nothing. I would stay clear of the Heavy syrup ones though. They do have sugar free ones and also the lite ones in just a sweet juice instead of syrup although they are more costly. But when it comes to our health I guess it is worth it.

Avoid any fruit packed in syrup, light or otherwise. There are plenty of options that are simply packed in juice. If you are getting canned fruit - get canned pineapple, for instance - get the ones that only use the actual juice, not syrup. There are several fruit cocktails that use juice as opposed to syrup. Similarly, tuna that is packed in oil is a whole lot less healthy that tuna that is packed in water.

I think the light syrup would be fine. If you don't mind using Cool Whip, that's what I use. I dump the juice out and mix Whip in. Not light on the calories I know, but it tastes so good!

its probably not too goood for them as the fruit syrup has a ton of sugar. it would be better to feed them fresh fruit. Or you could even dehydrate fruit and that would be a great snack that will keep for several months.
