It depends what you mean by better. If you can afford the payments, home ownership is better all the way around. When you rent, you have nothing to show for the money you pay each month...you own nothing so there is no investment. That money is "lost" for all intents and purposes. Those thousands that you spent on rent are gone, never to be seen again. When you buy, your money is invested in your home. Most homes appreciate in value, especially if you maintain them, so when you sell that home, you make a nice profit. You can see where your money is going and you get something out of the mortgage you paid each month.

Its always nice to have a home of your own. However, speaking solely from investment & returns point of view.. if good accomodation is available at cheaper rates then one should go for it and invest the money from house property in some more useful avenues. However, if the rents are gonna cost you a moolah in the near future.. depending upon demand supply thing, its better to have a home of own as soon as possible.

I prefer owning. I hate spending hundreds of dollars a month on rent, then you have nothing to show for it in the end. But, the plus side of renting, usually the landlord is responsible for any repairs that are needed, where as if you own the home, you also own the repairs.
