Designer purses - what do you think?

Where I go to school, it seems as though EVERY GIRL (except me, of course) who walks by has a $400 purse (Chanel, Coach, Fendi, etc). What do you think of these? If you have one, what is your justification for spending THAT much on ONE purse? If you don't, why not? Personally, I just can't justify spending that much on one little purse - i'd rather go buy one at the thrift store that's equally cute! :)

Well, I guess with them if they have the money they can spend it!!!!!! As for me, there is no way that I could spend that much on a purse. The highest for me would be $50.00. That is all! I wished that I had that kind of money where I could spend that much. But knowing me, I would rather buy a bunch of clothes and accessories that will give me so much more than I could handle.. I love having more than just one purse..

Thanks for answering! I agree - I splurged and bought a $60 Guess satchel (on clearance), and I felt bad for spending THAT much! And plus, if you don't have enough money, you don't have enough money, period. I'd rather have a bunch of clothes and a cheap purse than an expensive purse & cheap clothes! :] Where do you usually shop for purses?

I can't see the point in it. I think people buy them just so people will look at it and know how much they spent, which is pretty stupid really. they are no better in quality than a cheaper purse, and I'd rather get my moneys worth. I've never spent more than £25 on a bag. I'd rather get something more individual, than something purely designed to make other people think you have lots of money.

just ordinary high street shops. for day to day I have a few really nice canvas bags that will hold everything I need. for smarter day to day I have a smart, plain black leather handbag. and I have a diamante covered little clutch for going out. all from the high street. the canvas bags I use, one was £3.50, one was £10 (with staff discount, £7.50). the smart leather one was £20. the sparkly one was £22.50, half price from £45 (which I'd NEVER pay for a bag) and they're all durable, practical (well maybe apart from the sparkly one, but that's not meant to be practical) and stylish. I wouldn't even pay £30 for a bag, let alone hundreds of pounds.

I agree with you...go to the thrift store and get a cute one. I wouldn't spend so much on a purse I think it's impractical and crazy. I have only one purse of FILA brand. been using it for many years now and has also gone into the washing machine for washing. It is still lasting and there is no sign of tear. So I guess I'll be using this one till there's a hole or something. No intention of changing or buyig a new one. I think some girls uses such expensive branded stuff is because they think it will boost their confidence or it will make them feel they belong. In my opinion, we don't need things to make us feel belong. Just be who we are that's the best. by the way we can't please everyone and follow every trend.

I am way too cheap to spend that much on ONE accessory. I would much rather take that $400 and buy a bunch of new clothes, shoes and accessories. I don't think I've ever spent more than $10 on a purse and I've got a few that are soooo cute, so I don't see the point in spending hundreds of dollars on one item. I didn't even spend that much on prom dresses or good business clothes.

I love Deb's. They have so many good deals. One day, I went in there and they had a HUGE clearance deal; lots of clothing priced at $1 and $3. I bought twelve dollars worth of stuff...when I got home I added up the original prices and it was over $100 worth of stuff I got for only $12!

LOL me too! I love shopping consignment, especially for clothes - and you can find some pretty amazing deals. And I agree - I spent about $30 on my prom dress (although I had to buy shoes, accessories, and get my hair and nails done - which costed a lot) at a store called Deb. Go us! :) Thanks for answering!

hi first of all i think that all this fasion stuff is a big rip off so get a peice of material and sew a name on it after all that is what were paying for its no better than the generic brand other than a name and clothers and accer don make the person no matter how made up they are its what we have inside us that counts

I'm sure they're better quality than a bag under £10. but no better than the £15 upwards price bracket. certainly not hundreds of pounds worth better quality. if these products didn't have a fancy name but the same quality, they'd probably be £70 tops.

That's a very good perspective to have. :) But here's a question - so you think that generic brands and designer brands have the same quality? I've heard from a lot of people so far that designer bags are WORTH buying because they last much longer than normal, generic ones. What do you think? Thanks for your answer, by the way!

I would guess that most of the girls are buying the knock off purses at a much cheaper price. I do have a chanel purse and a gucci purse that I did pay the real price for. I love a good purse and use them a lot. I figure I will use them for years to come versus having to buy a new cheaper purse that will wear out faster. In the long run you accutally save money. The quality is unbelieveable!!

Really? So do you think it's worth it? Do you even use your purses when the style is no longer in season? The university I go to has a very large suburban-rich population - so I'd highly doubt that the purses are knock-offs (I'm pretty sure I can tell the difference between Coach knockoffs & real Coach purses, although I probably couldn't tell with Fendi & Chanel.) And by the way, out of curiousity - where on earth do you GET a Chanel handbag?

At the the Chanel store in Houston TX.

see the thing is though. yes, they're probably better quality than a really cheap purse, but not better than a £20 ish purse quality wise. they're not hundreds of pounds worth of quality better. I think paying for a purse that is not cheap, but less even than half the price of a designer one, you get the best quality for your money.

Those kinds of girls and women make me sick, spending that kind of money on a stupid purse and my guess is that if they saw a homeless person on the street, they would snub them and just walk on by! Those girls have no idea what REAL life is all about, but someday they'll find out and it will be the end of their $400 purses! If they wait a little while, those $400 purses WILL be in the thrift stores for under $5.00!

Seriously! I've found Kate Spade purses (that weren't knock-offs) at a thrift store for around $8. I guess that just goes to show you.. But I agree with you 100%! Some people are so greedy. Thanks for answering!

i actually have two designer bags. one is a chanel and the other a louis vuitton. i got the chanel when i first started working. it was like a treat for entering the working world. my louis vuitton was purchased slightly more than a year ago. the main reason was the sturdy build. i use it as my grocery bag and it holds weight much better than cotton bags. so now i go to work, go out and go grocery shopping with only one bag.

I'm not going to spend that kind of money on a name brand purse. I buy inexpensive purses and toss them out every few years for a new one. They are always in style and nice and new that way.

I've never ever spent over $20 for a purse. And never will. It's pretty dumb to buy one for more than that in my opinion. You'll just get tired of it or it will break, or wear out. Pointless!! Plus, you'll look like everyone else. And doesn't everyone want to be an "individual" and "different" these days?

I love shopping for purses, and there are many out there that I would love to have. I have never bought a purse for more than 30 dollars. I can't see the point. I shop for mine at TJMaxx, and Ross... they have great styles and good prices them. I do have some friends that have paid that much on them and they regret it later only to find out that it went on sale a few weeks later or someone found the same one at the stores i mentioned above, or at thrift store. Which makes them mad.

I am a little older and well, now that I pay for all my own things I have come to appreciate a well made pocketbook. I spend more now on a purse then I ever would have when I was in school, but have yet to spend anywhere close to the $100 dollar mark. Some purses are what could be called classics, they are styles that arent' going to go out of fashion--wardrobe staples. These are the type of purses you'd take to a job interview or carry to church or something like that, and you can come closer to justifying the expense on something you will use over and over for years and years to come, because sometimes the saying you get what you pay for is true. I can't justify spending a huge amount of money on one of those funky neon colored contraptions that you just know is a fad or a trend. I have come to love site like e-bay because you can sometimes catch great deals on trendy purses or high end purses that someone who is what I like to call a name brand/fad junky is selling because they have moved on to another fad. I have also run acrossed some steals at thrift stores like Goodwill. Happy Shopping.

How do you afford them? Do you charge them, or do you start saving up at the beginning of the year? And, for that matter, what do you do with your purses once the year ends and it's time to buy another one? Thanks for your reply! :)

I have a few designer purses that I inherited from my mom. I guess women spend a lot on designer purses because they remind them of how hard they've worked, plus they're adorable and sturdy. Of course, I don't think it would be practical to buy an expensive bag if you don't earn a lot. So when I start making my own money, I'll buy designer purses only when I can afford to - and by that I mean, when I have lots and lots of money to spare. Necessities first, of course.

I think designer purses are overrated. I can't see spending $400 for a purse just because of it's name when I can get a perfectly good one for $10 or $15 from Wal-Mart or Target. If some people have the money to spend it though, it's their choice. Personally, I'd rather spend it on something more practical. But that's just me.

Oh yeah, they can afford it.. but if i'm as rich as they are, then i won't still spend $400 for a purse.. i mean, with all the financial meltdowns and global recessions, we should learn how to be practical.. i'd settle for one that's cheap yet stylish..

well i think its use less spending so much for a designer purse, basic need of purse is to carry cash or some small kits which could come in it so i dont think we need a designer purse for it which cost $400

That's true. And what's funny is that if I spent $400 on a purse or wallet, I would have absolutely NO money to PUT into the purse or wallet after that - so it kind of defies the purpose! Thanks for answering :)

Okay. Over here in where I live I think that only the really, really, REALLY rich persons have that kind of purse. A few--just a few celebrities actually own a collection of those kind of stuff. And then there's the ones working abroad. In theory, designer purses cost as much as my semester's tuition here in college, so there's no way in hell I can throw that kind of cash in a bag--even if my parents let me do so. I see that there are more purposeful ways I can use money, like buying a house and such. In practice--yes, I think I'd spend that much on a bag because those things are pretty long-lasting and if it gets broken the store can take it and fix it for you. My fairy godmother gave my mom a Coach bag two years ago. She still uses it today. I, on the other hand, am given something a little cheaper--Nine West. They've been giving me those stuff long before I finished high school; I've grown to love them.

So you buy designer bags & cluthes? What kind of brands do you have, and how much is the most you've spent on a purse?

In my opinion, if the money you spent for the designer purse is your own hard-earned cash, then that's just okay. You worked for it, anyway. For me, it's not my business to question where your money goes, what you buy and why. If you end up getting financial problems in the end, at least there's no one else to blame but yourself. :) But personally, I'm not into that kind of expensive stuff. Or if ever I buy something that's a bit on the pricey side, I make sure that it's of good quality and that it's really useful to me. There's no point in buying something that you're not going to use anyway.

A very open-minded answer. :) I agree in a sense, no one can tell you how to live and how to spent your money, although I would hope that people who are in certain financial situations would know what they should & should not spend their money on. Thanks for the answer!
