I have high cholesterol too ( well my doctor said it goes with diabetes). Dairy products are sources of cholesterol, you can still eat some but just be cautious. I use veggie slices cheese its made of soy so it has no cholesterol. There are also 0 cholesterol milk. I initially thought that eating fatty food will cause elevated cholesterol levels. But eating dairy and salty food does too. There is also some chemical reactions involve that cause high cholesterol if you are diabetic. But you must know that genetics can also play a role. After I was diagnosed with high cholesterol, I went on a very low cholesterol diet with the help of my nutrionist and diabetic educator. Still the next test, its still high. Thats when the doctor told me it can be because I have a strong family history of hyperlipidemia. They put me on medication ( although I hate it) Dont be depressed. Just do lots of exercise. Eat lots of oatmeal, salmon, and use olive oil. Avoid eating fried foods too. You just need a lifestyle modification and you will be okay.

I have just been told mine cholesterol is rather high so I am changing my diet to try and make it right before having to go on medications...the whole thing with what oils and things confuse me a lot and the fact that they say dairy foods are important but they can be the cause, I am finding it all confusing...

Is this the first time you've been tested for high cholesterol? I ask because some people naturally have higher cholesterol than others. Cholesterol is produced by your liver, so even if you eat nothing that causes it, you'll still have cholesterol in your system. Some people have livers that produce more than others. Another thing they suspect that can cause too much is stress, so controlling what you eat may not be the whole picture.

I too have high cholesterol and I go to the Dr tomorrow to see if the medication he prescribed for me is working. Flaxseed is supposed to help lower it too.20 grams is supposed to work as well as the medicine. Cutting back on animal products helps too. There are substitutes for cheese that are pretty good. You can find recipes on the web to make your own too. Here is a web site that give foods that will help with the cholesterol http://whfoods.org/genpage.php?tname=fightdz&dbid=27#discussion

I am not an expert when it comes to medical issues. However I do think that two factors influence wheter we have high cholesterol or not. The first is our diet, we are made up of what we eat. Secondly it is hereditary. ARe you the only one in your family that has this condition?
