Going to the Dentist

My husband had to go to the dentist today to get 2 teeth extracted and then they saw a 3rd one that need to come out. Now he is home with gauze in his mouth, looking like a chipmunk. I am not making fun of him, I just call it as I see it. He has to eat something soft as he can not chew, both sides are affected by this. I offered to make him warm soup,no he say, I offered pudding/jello, no he says, eggs, milk soaked cereal, egg noodles. He says no to all of this. I ask what would you like, anything soft he says. UUGGHH! Finally I thought of mashed potatoes, HE SAYS YES! Horray!! I feel bad for him to have to go through this but give me a break. I have a few questions here: How often do you go to the dentist? Do you go yearly and keep up with your dental needs or do you just go when you know you need a filling or an extraction? Money is tight now a days and many insurances do not cover dental, does your insurance cover it for you? Finally, are you a baby when you have this done?

We have two types of dental treatment here in Italy: one on the National Health which is pratcially free but you have to wait months for an appointment and the other is private. When I was working regularly and before the present crisis I used to go privately once or twice a year. Now things have changed. I desperately need to go but I can't possibly afford to go privately as there is too much needs doing. I'm now putting it off and putting it off which I know is not good but I'm scared of going to a dentist I don't know and doesn't know me I hate the dentist

Hi Mysdianait, I wish we had a national health plan here to help with our costs. I would not mind the wait if I could. It is just so expensive to go to any doctor any more, their fees are so high. I could never understand why they charge our insurance companies so much either. It took my husband a while to go, he was in pain for a while and then as the tooth fell apart and the food got stuck in it, it was hard for him to chew. He could not take it anymore so he made an appointment. I think that is what most of us do, wait until we can't take it anymore. I hate the dentist too, they like to pass out pain. I had one dentist many years ago that did not hurt me but I moved since then and have not found one here yet. Good luck to you and as always, thanks for your response.

My fear is very strong too. Many years ago the dentist's drill slipped and it got the tissue by my tongue, I know your pain. That fear has never gone away. I had another dentist that treated meas a child and numbed my gum before he gave me a shot. I liked him better, virtually painless. I have moved to another state and he is too expensive to get hotel just to go see him. LOL. I do need to go, I have an eye tooth that needs to come out and I know that one will really hurt. Not looking forward to that at all. Well, have a good day and keep on posting.

Here insurance does not cover dentists (unless you have a very high special insuarance coverage which I and many have not got) so it's more or less the same I guess. I am so scared of the dentist that many, many years ago one dentist managed to slightly cut my tongue because I was shaking so much. The next time he informed me that if I was willing to collaborate he would continue wanting to treat me otherwise I would have to find another dentist. I remained with him and we have a sort of mutual understanding all these years - but he is so expensive I am happy to respond jsitko because you comment back and discuss while so many others do not bother. That's not fun when they don't

I am so sorry for your husband, extractions of teeth are so hurtful. We are lucky we have some dental insurance and have kept up our health in that area. Last year I paid more to the Dentist then any other health problems.

Hi Savypat, My husband is better now that he has taken a pain killer prescribed by the Dr. The gauze finally came out 30 minutes ago and no bleeding. He is just like a little boy and I am trying my best to make sure he is comfortable. We are hoping that our insurance is going to cover the bill since it was an oral surgeon that did the extractions. Medical care is just so expensive now and it seems that the insurances are paying less and less each year. Thanks for your response and have a great day.

Hi Savypat, One of the first things my husband did when he got home was to rake out the gauze rinse and then put in more gauze because it was still bleeding. A few hours later it stopped and then the pain came back. He got pain meds, but after we got them home he started to read the label. The side effects were worse than his pain. Tylenol to the rescue. I had him rinse his mouth again with salt water this morning before he went to work. Hopefully he will do it again at work after lunch. Thanks again and enjoy the day.

Did they tell you when you can start rinsing with hot salted water, if not call and find out. This is the best way to heal sores in the mouth including surgery.

That's funny but I feel sorry for your husband. Well, I just got from a dentist last Saturday to have my teeth cleaned. I usually go to my dentist as regularly as yearly. But that was before, when I was still leaving in the other city. My last visit to my dentist is about six years now. Last Friday, I told my wife that I wish to have our daughter's tooth extracted. So on Saturday, we went to the dentist.

Hi Neildc, My husband is doing better now and off to work. He has a little discomfort but tylenol is taking care of that. I need to go to, it has been quite a while for me. If I knew I could get away with just a cleaning, I would go. They will want to extract a tooth and repair old fillings in two more. How did your daughter do getting her tooth extracted? Hope all went fine. Thanks for your response and have a great day.

Hi Neildc, I am glad to hear that your daughter is doing fine. She does sound very brave, braver than me and most adults. I am sure she will grow up and make sure she takes care of her own teeth. It is a good habit to get when you are a child. I wish her much luck on the weekend. Thanks again for stopping by again. Have a great day.

Good to hear that your husband is doing fine now. As for my daughter, she is also doing great. As of now, she is taking some medicine to prepare herself for the next extraction on weekend. This daughter of mine is the bravest of our kids. You know, the dentist never heard a word from her while her tooth was extracted. I hope on weekend, she will be as brave as she was...

I am really sorry for your husband but I think you can give him a lot of ice creams to help his toothache. Also, you can use blender to mash everything and feed him with the same. I am personally very scared of the dentist and would try everything to avoid him.

Hi Dropofrain, I gave him soft foods for dinner, his choice was scrambled eggs and cheese with mashed potatoes. He is not much for ice cream unless it is coffee ice cream. We do have some, but he thought that the cold would hurt the gums just as much as food being to hot would. If it were me, I would take the excuse just to eat the ice cream. He should be able to eat a little better tonight, still soft foods though. I do not like the dentist either, got scared of them when I was a child. Thanks for your response and have a great day.

I hear you...lol :) I have really bad teeth, and it's taken around 4 years of extractions, root canals, and crowns to get my teeth back in shape. Very painful and expensive. I've never had to deal with more than one extraction at a time, but I can empathize with your husband. I go to the dentist every 6 months, and I use a prescription flouride toothpaste. I also get a special flouride treatment done twice a year. I'm much better about flossing and brushing now.... It isn't the dental pain that hurts me, the amount of money we've put out for it all is far more painful :(

Hi Bohemian, We are hoping that the insurance company is going to pay what we didn't. It cost over $500 to get 3 teeth extracted and we paid $149 up front. It should get covered since it was an oral surgeon and not just a dentist. My husband does not like going unless there is work to be done. Our insurance will pay for one check up and cleaning a year. I will need to push him to do this. He is resting now as the novacaine has worn off and he is on a pain killer. Thanks for your response and have a great day.

I know how that goes, EXPENSIVE is the word for going to the dentist I hate haveing to pay all that money just to chew. I would rather let all my teeth go bad and pay 100 bucks per tooth till their all gone and get something like dentures. I pretty much gave up on my teeth.

Hi mmc, Ohh! I bet that did hurt. I hate it when the nerve gets exposed, that hurts terrible, I can not imagine how the pain is when you get the nerve extracted. Hope you are better now. Thanks for responding and have a great day.

i had experienced that as well... i was having a root canal treatment and it is so painful... also the filling because my teeth has huge holes on them... i think i had fixed more than 6 teeth last year and it costs me a bomb... dental treatment is so expensive here and my private insurance only help me to pay very little for it... so most of them have to come out from my own pocket... good luck to your hubby... hope he will get well soon... take care and have a nice day...

Hi Lingli, I agree, root canals are painful, I have had one long ago. I need one tooth extracted and 2 more repaired, the filling are falling apart. It is a shame that our insurance will not pay for dental work. I have learned that if your dentist refers you to an oral surgeon to get them extracted, your insurance company will pay for a lot more of the bill. My husband is better and taking tylenol for the discomfort. I feel for him getting 3 extracted in one day. It will be soft foods for a little while, at least until the stitches dissolve and the gum heals. Thanks for your response and you have a good day too.

I've been going twice a year for a long time with no dental insurance and thus have only had more than the check-up costs on rare occasions since I take very good care of my teeth. With the present economic climate and an expected severe drop in my income for 2009 and perhaps beyond, I hope I can still go twice a year to make sure no problems are starting. I have had to have some expensive dental work done but not because of neglect but because of trauma from a seizure I before my seizure disorder was diagnosed. The effects of the trauma to the teeth took a long time to manifest.

Hi Stealthy, Thanks for your response. I think that keeping you with your check ups does save you money and your teeth in the long run. Let's hope you can continue that habit especially since you have so much invested into your teeth already. Hope all is well. Have a great day and thanks again.

I always go once a year, and try to go twice a year. My teeth are very important to me. I hate going to the dentist, I even have a bit of a panic disorder, so I make sure I take really good care of my teeth so that I don't have to have any extra work done because it is difficult for me handle it. My insurance covers 1 cleaning per year for kids, 2 for adults, and any other dental work is paid 80%. I hope your husband feels better soon.

Hi Ladym, Thanks for your response. It is very important to get your teeth cleaned and taken care of yearly. I too try to take care of my teeth so I do not have to go and get extra work done. I do have to go soon as I have a tooth that either needs repair or extracted. You are very fortunate that your insurance covers so much 80% is great. I wish ours covered that much. It covers better at the oral surgeon that at the dentist and that is where my husband went. Thanks again and have a great day.

It's weird that this discussion popped up because I went for my check-up today. I go about every 7-8 months, and still go with my Mum and Brother, just because it's what we've always done. Everything was fine, I just needed them polishing a little bit. My brother needs a filling though. It's his first one and he's terrified. I really don't like going. I get so nervous, but I honestly don't know why, because they've never done anything painful to me. I don't have to pay either, because I still attend college, so all of my dental fees are paid for by the government, which is loveelyy! I would still prefer not to go at all though!

Hi GemmaR, You seem to be the lucky one not needing any work done. Getting a filing is not much fun either. I dread going to the dentist because it usually is painful. I do not like getting the cleanings as it really hurts my gums, I guess they are sensitive. Hope your brother gets through his filling pain free. It is also nice that you do not have to pay the bills. They get pretty high. Thanks for responding and good luck in college.

My dentist insists on visiting him every six months and no less than that. Like you and your husband, hubby and I recently went to the dentist. It's a new dentist that was referred to us by a friend. I haven't gone to the dentist since I found out I was pregnant and that makes it 2 years (my daughter is now more than a year old). I was surprised to find out that two of my molars are extremely damaged and had to be extracted. I also underwent deep scaling cleaning which was a little painful considering all the plaque that was built up in the two years that I haven't gone to the dentist. My husband on the other hand haven't been to the dentist for more than a decade! Imagine that! Like me, he also underwent a deep-scaling cleaning process and 2 of his lower incisors were badly damaged by plaque and had to be extracted as well. He's now wearing false teeth to fill the gap. I feel so guilty for not visiting the dentist when I should have. Now, I will never save the teeth I've lost and the same is true for my husband. That is why it is very, very important to visit the dentist every 6 months. You have to take care of your teeth because they will not grow back anymore.
