With the economy going downhill, is volunteering a great option?

Many people are losing their jobs and can't find new ones. Many people are having trouble and don't have the skills to get a new job. I think currently this makes volunteering an excellent option. Volunteering in the right area can give you experience which will look good on your resume, and provide skills which can help you get a job. As another benefit you are doing some good. What do you think? Is volunteering becoming a more attractive option with todays economy? Will you volunteer more?

Volunteering is always a great option. I decided to retire early in 2007 and one of the things that I wanted to do was volunteer. It was something that I always wanted to do but never really seemed to have the time. I record books for an organization called Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic. You get back so much more than you give when you volunteer and it's a great place to network. You'll meet people from all different companies and you can get an "in" when there's a job opening. I also think that companies like to see someone who gives back to the community when they're reviewing resumes

As a teacher I definately support parent volunteers. Some of the best help you can get is a dedicated parent who is there because they "want" to be there. And you can make some wonderful contacts. Volunteering also looks very good on a resume. It tells a prospective employer that you are dedicated to the community around you, which lets them know you will be dedicated to them. I'm not sure where you are looking but schools always need volunteers. You'll need to be finger-printed but that is an easy process. You can also check out volunteering for a local hospital, they are always in need.

Not only is it good in a good way, it can also help on a job hunt. You can help others and then yourself. Employers like to see that on your resume. I volunteer, always have, but now there is a major need for help. I know because we get as well as we give.
