Should I buy my textbooks on the internet?

College Textbooks - Used College Textbooks
United States
March 8, 2009 3:00pm CST
Last semester I spent around 400 dollars a semester on textbooks from Universities Book Store. This seems like a lot of money to me, and it got me thinking perhaps there is a cheaper way to purchase textbooks. Has anyone purchased their textbooks online, and did they find it cheaper than purchasing them from their schools bookstore? Thanks

Hi Badgerdan18, I'm almost sure that all colleges do this...at my daughter's college she can actually buy used books and they are way cheaper than the new ones. Also remember that some books that are a must have for whatever class sometimes are not even used by the professor, UGH...this happened to me when I was in college and it is sooooooooooooooo frustrating because when I tried to sell it back to the college, of course I got a certain percent of the price I payed which was no where near what I originally paid. But check it out, you may be able to buy them used and they're usually in good condition. Good luck with your college! ~G~

I should add that buying them on the net may not be the smart thing to do as you must pay shipping & handling!

I bought a lot of my books on amazon.com through their used section. You could also talk to people who have the class you are taking next semester this semester and see if there is a way to trade books with them or buy their book from them. We did that a lot in my college.

This semester I bought all of my new textbooks online. Guess what? Instead of paying 380$, I only paid 90$. That's 75% less!

I havent done this myself, but my wife purchases her text books online when I make my casual book purchases. We use both chapters.ca and amazon.ca which offer free shipping over $39. The free shipping is a must as books are heavy and can be costly. I would reccomend trying this but calculate the cost of the online purchase and the bookstore prices and see which is cheaper.. We have never had a bad experience with this, and recieve our products within a week or so. Hope this helps.

Hello, buying online is not so cheaper. It usually depends upon ur line you chose. Like me, im a computer student so I too have to go-through diff. books. But I have found an alternative to it. I usually refer eBooks(Electronic Books). You just have to gain knowledge whether through books or e-books. I think u should try to read electronic books. One of the most common advantage of e-books is their simple language and logic. You can find a no. of e-books on the net by diff. authors...

When i was buying books for college i went to the used bookstore and bought them there for cheaper - then sold them back to the used bookstore when i was done with them. For lots of classes i found i had friends who had taken them previously so i ended up borrowing their books and returning them after the end of the semester - i found that tons cheaper. I looked online at the time but found it cheaper to go to the used store than it was to pay shipping on some of the books.

WOW 400 DOLLARS... Thats a lot. Well I prefer buying online, since they give better deals and THEY ARE A LOT MORE CHEAPER than retail prices in the bookstores. Or if your cheap like me you can purchase them from a local bookstore and scan and print them in like a office depot and save money. Printing cost aroun d30 dollars, but its better than nothing. xD

What I would do is try to find a friend in the year above you who took the same classes you wanna take and convince him to just sell his used books to you for a friend/ cheaper price. Online books are cheaper than bookstore prices by often not by a lot to make a big difference. Try this method I feel like friends often try to help each other out and there's always the chance to bargain as well. The more you buy from him technically the cheaper you can negotiate to right?

I alaways buy books and other things online because it is convenient and most of all, they are much cheaper. You can compare prices in different online shops and buy the cheapest. But you should be cautious that there are some liars on the internet so you'd better go big online shops to buy your books.
