What are your thoughts on affirmative action?

I guess I started thinking about this more now that college applications results are slowly rolling out. What are your opinions on affirmative action? I believe that affirmative action is better off based on socioeconomic class than on race--after all, if you're poor and of any race, you will have a harder time taking college prep classes, participating in (often expensive) extracurricular activities and so on. Any thoughts?

I think it's a legalized form of racism that is acceptable by the government. It may give minorities the chance to move up in life or have better opportunities, but it also puts unqualified workers and misatched people in jobs they are not qualified to do. Rather than take the best candidate for the job or the position, the person doing the hiring or enrolling must take the black person or the Hispanic person because some quota states that there will be x white students per every x black student and so on. People need to realize that race doesn't determine whether you can do a job any more than standing in a garage makes you a mechanic.

I think that affirmative action is something that had it's place but I dont know if it is something that is necessary in today's world. I think that there are some people who could benefit from it but it is probably not necessary in the world today. I dont know if it is really needed. It probably isnt.

I believe affirmative action to be nothing more than legalized discrimination. Could you imagine theoutrage there would be if someone tried to enact affirmative action that benfited white males? People would be public lynched and forced to seek counceling and apologize to Al Sharpton.

Affirmative action may have had its benefits at some time, but I think it should be put away with now, same as the question what race you are on every single questionnaire. It might be valuable to have that for medical diagnostic purposes, but otherwise it's just all racism any way your turn it. We need to stop putting labels on people.
