It seems the more I research about publishing the less I know. So many sights that will help, but the cost per book is crazy. Any one got info or ideas on what to do about a novel of 350 pages? No place I have seen will produce it for less than 15.00 in a paperback, and lets face it when was the last time anyone paid more than 15. for a paperback? It's a sci-fi action book, first in the series and and am now working on the next book, but unsure where to go from here.

Have you looked at Lulu.com? There's another couple of publishers as well (whose names I can never remember) who work in similar fashion. I think I saw something on Squidoo that covered some options. Let me check my URLs.... http://www.squidoo.com/PublishingMethods There y'go. No idea who the author is, but it's one HECK of a guide.

Why don't you try submitting it to a publishing house where they pay all the costs to produce your book - and then they pay you for writing it as well? This is how most novel writers manage their writing careers. Self-publishing means you're going into business as a publisher. You're responsible for production, printing, shipping, sales, returns, refunds, customer service, marketing, promotion, cover art etc etc. Where will that leave you time to write anything else?

Not to mention that self-publishing makes it difficult to get your book into brick-and-mortar bookstores. A lot of bookstores will not order POD titles even if they're available through Ingram or other distributors. The only way that they will carry the books in their stores is by setting up a consignment contract, which leaves the author responsible for purchasing the product up front. OP, I really think you should consider Raven's suggestion. If you don't know where to get started, try looking on Duotrope.com since they have a great search engine that will show publishers that match your criteria. You can also check out some of the writers' forums like Absolute Write and FM Writers for help--the folks on those two boards are wonderful.

When it comes to self-publishing, most places deal in what is called 'POD', or Print On Demand. The basis being that the more books you print, the cheaper the costs. I would try Lulu.com, but if that doesn't work, shop around and see if there are any local printers in your area. And if you want a barcode and ISBN, then it's going to cost you more. It's not an easy goal to achieve, but it's very rewarding.

I have checked for publishers in the area and no luck, and all the pod were rather high price, but thanks for the reply.
