Does Your Boss Have The Right To Tell You That You Can Not Talk About God

In the workplace? My sister and I are having a debate and she says that a boss has the right to tell you not to mention God while you are at work. She says, that if you do, he has the right to fire you. I believe that no one should be able to tell me when and where to talk about God. I would never interrupt a businesss day, but if I am talking about something to a co-worker and I happen to mention God, I do not feel that anyone has the right to censor me. I would not make a big fuss about it, I would simply seek another place of employment. What are your feelings on this?

I agree with you that no one has a right to tell us when or where to talk about God. But God said that let us give to Ceasar what is due to Ceasar and to give respect to the person in authority. God is our ultimate Boss and to abide in the office rule that our company boss is implementing doesn't mean that we are not following God. What if our boss is not a Christian believer, as Christ believer we must show a good example of Christ. At first we should show respect on his or her belief in able for us to penetrate on willing him or her closer to God. And with regards to winning our other office mate closer to God we still have other option to talk to them like break time and after office hour outside your office area.

I agree with you but I understand there are rules at jobs, but off company time or during breaks a job should not try to dictate what others talk about to me this is going way too far. I myself like I said in my comment would start looking for another job because why be unhappy right? Take care and happy mylotting :)

I think it's not right, talking about GOD and sharing it is a good thing to do. Your Boss surely does not have faith in GOD. ^_^

Thee is such a thing as freedom of speech and I think that if you were talking about God during a lunch break or something then no one can tell you not to/ I mena your boss. If a co worker said that she found the talk to be uncomfortable to her then out of courtesy you would probably stop. As Christians we are told to evangelise and take to Good News to everyone. I do not think that yo could be fired for this. In my country yo would not be fored for talking about God.

WEll I feel this is really not fair at all. I know that people have a right to believe the way they want but so do people that believe in God. To me this is not right. I would never work for someone that would try to dictate what I talk about on my time such as a break or off the job stuff. So I would tell them to take their job and stuff it. I know this might sound harsh but everyone has the right to speak about how they feel without pressing people. Take care happy mylotting to you.

I wouldn't see how he has the right to tell you not to talk about god, but I think he has the right to ASK you not to talk about God. Not everyone believes in "God" so its a tough issue. Think about it this way, atheist parents have taken the pledge of allegiance to court because it mentioned God. The prayer that use to be said before class started was taken out of public schools too. Yes, I believe everyone has the right to speak freely but if its a controversial topic I think its better not to do it in the work place. Take the conversation outside of the work place with respects to others there that may not agree with you.

I do not mean that I would try witnesing to people at work, unless I felt God prompting me to. I just mean in every day casual conversations I might mention a blessing or something.

Religion and politics are very touchy issues. I think that the boss in only trying to keep a neutral environment in the office. I have some very strong beliefs, but I am not going to take them out in the office. There's enough going on in the office without trying to start a political or religious war.

That would upset me. I hope her boss sees differently about talking about God one day before something bad happens to him and he needs God. Of course I am sure he needs to accept God into his life. It sounds really sad to me.

I think it should be okay to talk about god , if you are refering in the workplace. I do feel as though your boss has the right to set standards as far as during working hours. It really shouldnt be a problem if this topic is being discussed during lunch or at break time.

Religion and faith is totally a different thing. It is quite personal and I think nobody has the right to interfere with what we believe in and what we say with respect to such things. So I think that our boss have the right to say not to talk about God or discuss about our faith if ever we want to.

Aren't we supposed to be working???? Unless you are a pastor, you aren't really doing your job. Of course, on your time use that freedom of speech. I think most bosses won't do anything unless someone complains then they are forced to take action. If they don't, the lawyers may win it all. Business is all about MONEYnot much else.

Hello I have a degree in law and NO a boss can not fire you for talking about God, It falls under Admendment I (1) which states the following: Freedom of Religion, Speech, of the Press, and Right of Petition: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free excerise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; of the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress grievances. Now in most states like mine a boss can fire you for no reason except the fact he does not think you are the right person for the job and you cannot do much about it like sue the boss for firing you. The only time you can sue your boss for firing you in these types of states is if he states the reasons he is firing you and their are witnesses or the boss is stupid enough to write it in your employment file while he fired and it the reason falls under discrimination like firing you because you talked about God or Religion then you have a law suit. But they usually find another reason to fire you and you cannot do much about it. So the answer to your question is NO a boss CANNOT fire you for talking about God or Religion but he can look for another reason to fire you if he does not want you talking about God or Religion in the work place.

A boss does not have the right to tell you that you can't talk about God. People tend to forget their roles in life. We are just sheep accounted for the slaughter. God is almighty. He is the supreme ruler. If someone wants to mention God in a business environment, he/she can do so. If someone doesn't like it, they don't have to listen. It is good to be respectful to people who are non-religious, but telling someone they can't talk about God is not being respectful to their religion. It goes both ways. Any business that doesn't embrace God is not a business you want to be a part of.

i don't think he has the right to do that. we all have our right to mention God or any other topic to anyone at anytime. nobody should direct us what to say or what not to say. religion/faith/belief is a personal choice and nobody should question us for the choices we make or follow.

If you are on your break or your lunch hour, I believe you can talk about whatever you choose. If an employer put up stringent rules about talking about God, to enforce it the employer would have to enforce it for all faiths. On the other hand, a co worker can sue you for causing them to have to work in an hostile environment if they do not subscribe to the same religious believs.

each company is allowed to have their own policies on such topics in the work place. i don't have a problem with co-workers talking about the Lord, but if it is against company policy then i would not do it.

No, everyone should be able to talk about their God if they like, as long as it's not in a negative form, they're not putting anyway else down and they're not judging each other. Every one should be free to speak about their God, no one has the right to deny a person that freedom. However I do think it's better to keep those things for your own time as not every one agrees with it and 90% of the time, openly speaking about religion will end up in an argument.

I would think a small comment would be ok like you are excited about the upcomming holiday service ect. But I think if you are preaching at folks then it's time for the boss to step in and tell you to keep your beliefs at home. I worked with a guy who thought our department was his pulpit to preach this and that and hold lil gatherings with a few co-workers.... it's a SHOE DEPARTMENT of a store not a Church! I didn't mind it at first but there came a point when you got preached at about his interpretations and you had no right to your own ect it got to be too much.

If your boss is the owner of the company then he has the right to set the tone of what kind of environment the workplace should have. While it is not legal to fire someone for discussing God, you can be fired if your belief or specifically your expression of your belief makes for a difficult situation for your coworkers. If an employer were to take you aside and to ask you to respect all belief systems and keep your feelings and views to yourself while you are on the clock that would be a perfectly acceptible request.

Everyone is entitle to give their opinion. But with the scenario that you mentioned, since you make it by not interrupting the business. I guess your boss has no right to stop you tallking about god. Thou, I must admit that you also have to consider the religious believe of your boss. If he's an atheist, I guess you have been offending him when you talk about god. If you feel a need to really talk about god, you can choose a right place for that - during breaks maybe.
