The benefits of NOT having a car!..........................

I know, I know! You are probably saying " what benefits a person by not having a car?" Well there is one important thing I can think about......walking. Walking is the best exercise that one can give themselves and get this........it's free! I know so many people who will drive to a nearby store instead of walking because having a car has caused them to be lazy. Don't get me wrong. There are clearly more advantages of having a car than not but I'm just saying. How many of you out there who owns a car, drive to a nearby store......a store within walking distance of your home, simply because you have a car? Come on now, be honest!

if you own a car, u need to maintain it, u need to spend on it, u need to pay insurance for it,u need to insure your life too. walking can avoid these problems, but is it possible to travel a long distance? if not for the nearby store where you can walk and put down your extra calories. so its a boon as well as a bane.

I used to abuse having a car when I first got my licence, but these days I do prefer to walk if I can as it saves money as well as being a healthier alternative. I do not know what I would do without my car though as it does make my life a lot easier most of the time. I try not to use it if not necessary though.

...plus it's free. Exercise, your health, and you spend no money. Sounds too great to pass up for alot of folks in my area 'less they live way too far away (like my family).

I have to say, I hate my car. I hate driving, and I hate having to spend so much money on my car. But unfortunately, where I live it just isn't a choice. The city I live in is really large and spread out, and most of the places I need to go (work, grocery stores, etc) are simply not within walking distance. Even for places that are close enough in distance to walk, the routes aren't safe. Many of the roads here don't have sidewalks or pedestrian lanes. And on top of that, our public transportation might as well not even exist. I used to have a job that took about 20 minutes to drive to. One day my car was broken down so I took the city bus. It took almost 2 hours to get there. So, unfortunately, having a car here is necessary if I want to continue to work.

Yup...you are right. I do walk when the weather is nice unless of course I'm "in a hurry" which all too often I am. I went 4 years without a car and I walked everywhere and in all kinds of weather and I also walked to and from work & I work 2nd shift. You are right...the excersise is the bonus. I swore that I would continue walking for that benefit once I got my car. At first I did. But you know how that goes....even if it isn't raining...looks like it might. Ok...I've sat here pondering long enough trying to come up with one more benefit to not having a car and I really can't. When I think back...not only the 4 years that I mentioned I went without a car....I often did not have one when I was younger and walked or biked to where I needed. I really can't other than the excercise come up with another positive thing about it. If I were really really old...it might be good for others that i'm off the road. I think I'd rather work on my self-discipline than to turn in my car.

I absolutely agree that most of them have become lazy because of vehicles they own but making use of car in a right way would surely improve the living. I think usage of car should be only when you want to travel for longer distance and if its nearby its better to walk down, it would be a very good exercise and also it saves gas. Don't you think so?? I used to do the same, always used my car if i had to go to next lane but gradually, i got rid of that habit and now i walk more since my office is near by and only use car on weekends.

I do not drive. I walk to work. Walking is the greatest exercise that you can give your body with out any stress to it. My husband drives to work. We use the car for grocery shopping. I have taken the bus in other towns to the grocery store, and it such a hassle to do so.

I often walk to the convenience store by the house instead of taking the car. Though, having a car is very convenient. There are other advantages to not having a car. No car insurance. No gas money. No oil changes. It may be a bit expensive if you have to rely on a taxi, but you'll not likely find yourself changing a tire on the side of the road in the middle of the night.

The benefits of not having a car are ... You don't have to pay yearly registration, gasoline now a days is so expensive especially here in the Philippines. Of course if some car parts is damaged or have some problems.. you need it to bring to a repair shop and pay for it but what if it can't be repair so you have no choice but to buy a new to replace the damage one or you you can buy a secondhand in which you can get a lower price but still it is an expense! To bring your car to car wash is another expense... So for me, i am not in a hurry to have my own a car and just in case of emergency or family outing , my hubby have a van for these situation or occasion.

first thing, i dont think having a car or not having a car has any connection with health.it depends upon the person.a genuinely health conscious person may walk for small distances without his or her own car.so no matter you have a car or not, health may not be affected. but yes there are more advantages of having a car.but it also pollutes the environment.

I need my car for traveling purposes (i.e : work, visiting my family, go shopping, etc) but to get to a nearby store, I'll just walk. It's just opposite my house!

i understand your point. whenever people are given luxury, we easily get used to it and sometimes, we reach to a point like we cant live having it. But in truth, we can, and we started out without it. having a car has a lot of benefits, but we should learn to be resourceful and environmental friendly. imagine how very polluted our world is now and everyone is using their car even when they just want to go to nearby store. thats adding more pollution to the air, adding more unused fats in the body! guess people should learn how to think of whats good for everyone else!

I agree, having no car has benefits...aside of course from the walking as the best exercise, you save on gas, you don't spend much on the maintenance, registration, etc. We have cars, so in order to reap the maximum benefits between having a car and not having it, I park my car to a faraway place, then just walk to my place of destination. Like this morning, I went to the wet market to buy fish...I asked my daughter to park a walking distance away; I just walked after. See? You can still have best of both worlds. But of course, the gas and other expenses are definitely built-in to the comfort and speed that having a car provides. Great day....

I totally agree with you! For me, walking is very much better than driving. I usually walked going home from work that takes me an hour. Driving is good when you're going to a far place, but driving to a nearby store? WHy not try saving the gas for the next out of town trip? lol!
