Thurs. President Obama Hosted the First Ever Seder In the White House. WHY?

Why did Obama host a Jewish Passover Seder at all? He is not Jewish. He did not invite a bunch of Jewish friends. The Seder has no signifigance to christians or muslims or other religions at all. It has no meaning to them and no relation to their religions. He also got the wrong day. Wednesday was first Seder. Seder means order. It is a ritual of rememberance done in a specific order. Jews eat certain foods to remind them of the suffering that their people went through to escape the enslavement of the Egyptians. They say certain prayers, drink four cups of wine and sing certain songs. They also remember the 10 plagues which actually represent the gods of the Egyptians that the Jews rejected. Over the years the Haggadah (the book that is followed during the Seder) has added things such as rememberances of the Holocaust. The Passover Seder is a purely Jewish experience as is Yom Kippur. It is not just an excuse to have a party. A Seder is not a party. It is hours of prayer and study. It is extremely important to Judaism. The observance started on Wednesday evening April 8, and will continue until Thursday evening April 16, with services almost every day. Now that you know more about the Seder, do you think that Obama should have hosted one in the White House as a non~Jew? Shalom~Adoniah

I know what Seder is and was surprised when I heard about this! I thought maybe there were a lot of Jewish people in the white house who would appreciate his doing it! I don't understand why he did it!

Almost everyone who goes to Israel goes to the Wailing Wall. I would expect him to do that. Even women are allowed to go there now. That area holds meaning to all faiths. Shalom

If this would have been GWB, the media would be screaming how much of an idiot he is, how he didn't do it right, the left would be screaming separation of church and sate, some would call for the impeachment of him for offending Israel, others would call him a religious nut while others would find fault and say it was a zionist conspiracy to take over the USA. But nothin Baraak does can be wrong.

Frankly no. It is one thing to 'offer your home' for the observance so that your Jewish friends who need it, have a place to practice their holy days in peace, but to 'hold' a Seder of your own without the practicing of the religion as a part of your daily life doesn't make sense. If I were Jewish, I think I'd be insulted.....

The problem is that Obama is ready to "cut Israel loose". The U.S. and Israel have always had close ties because Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East and the only country that likes the U.S. in the Middle East. But Obama only likes Arabs not Jews and has made it very clear in the last month. He wants to make friends with Hamas who have lobbed bombs into Isreal everyday for 13 years I believe. He wants to make friends with Iran who wants to wipe Israel off the face of the earth. And he bowed to the Saudi King. Now he plays at having a Seder in the White House without even a Rabbi there to lead it? That is once again Denegrating the Jews. This is how Hitler started. I cannot help but see the similarity and the hatred. Shalom

I don't know. I kind of thought bowing all the way down, to the Saudi King, and then just shaking hands with the Queen of England who is actually an ally, told the true story. Shalom

I have to start watching more American news. I didn't know all this. And it's scary in the extreme. So our politicians being worried about Obama's 'muslim' ties/sympathies are not so far off the mark?

Well Adoniah, I'm not Jewish either and this dixcussion seemed very interesting so I googgled it also and this is what I found out. as it turns out while he was on the campaign trail in Pennsylvania, Obama joined his aides in an impromptu Passover dinner in the ball room of a Harrisburg hotel. And, this year he decided to treat the group to a dinner in his new surroundings. It was held in the Old Family Dining Room at the White House with several aides and their families. The dinner included matzo ball soup, brisket and kugel. I don't think Obama is yet aware of the attention his every move draws. Happy MyLotting...

He had the whole thing filmed and put on the net. He is very much aware of what he was doing. He made the statement that this was the first ever Seder in the White House, but he would not answer why he did it although he was asked serveral times why he did it. There were no Jews there and no Rabbi there. Non Jews do not celebrate with a Seder. They do the Easter thing or nothing at all. This was not Impromtu. It was well thought out and well publicized. So are you thinking Adoniah that this is a sign for Israel that they are on his short list? I remember Bidin saying that something would happen half way though his first year and that the majority of Americans would not think they made the right decision, I remember when he said that I said Oh My, they're going to attack Israel.

So Adoniah this is your faith and you see it was wrong for Obama to do it. Does religion practices belong to any religion. Anyone can do whatever he/she wants to as long his/her heart can stomach it. Remember if it is not pleasing in the sight of God it will be Obama soul which will need to repent. So instead to accusing and ranting it is best that you pray for him that he will be a good President one that is not push along path to do things that are contrary which I have notice him doing for sometime now.

I don't think he should have hosted this without first getting a complete insight into why it is kept as a special time. Maybe Obama is just trying to include all religions in observing this time. I think there is now too much emphasis put on the 'oh look I'm joining in with your religion' and not enough on learning what each religion is really about. I have no particular religion although I believe in a creator but I am interested in the religions of others and how and why they observe or celebrate certain dates and times. Thank you for this interesting information.

I agree you have a point and it could be history repeating itself. Sadly the only real news we have here about president Obama is that he is black, something the news people thnk we may not have noticed. nothing has been said about his beliefs or his political ideas. I think if I were Jewish I would take this behaviour as an insult and maybe as you do as a threat.

Obama is very arrogant. He has disrespected many of our allys. He has not been polite to the PM of England or the Queen. He treats the past president of France like he was still president and completely ignores the current President. The head of Germany is a woman to be dealt with. I do not think he can get away with disrespecting her. She will put him in his place publicly. And good for her too. Shalom~Adoniah

He is denegrating the Jews. He is putting down the most important of days for a Jew. First by celebrating it on the wrong day and then by not even having a Rabbi there to lead the Seder. No on had a kippah on their head out of respect. In the pictures there were no Haggadah Books so they did not read the Haggadah which is necessary for a Seder. No they were denegrating the Jews. Obama was taking the first step that Hitler took before he destroyed the European Jews. Obama does not like the Jews. He is all pro Arab. Shalom~Adoniah

0bama just keeps getting wierder and wierder! As a non-Jew, this probably offended some Jews and was a bad idea. At least he did not try to have a bar mitzvah for one of his daughters. Oh wait, maybe he will someday as a protest against gender discrimination. We'll have to wait and see.

Both of you are too funny! By the way Red thats Bat mitzvah for girls. I just find it weird that he didn't even invite the Jews that work for him. He was "playing Jewish host" to his family and a few friends. It was a joke. Jewish collegues emailed him and called him and asked why they had not been included. They did put pics on the net. I saw one Kippah(head covering) in the Pics so there was one Jew there. It was a game to him. Shalom

Jesus' last supper was a seder, so I think it is very appropriate. Also he has a few Jews in his cabinet, like Rahm Emanuel and David Axelrod. I think it's very important for him to recognize Judasm. As a NYC person, I have had to listen to the blow-by-blow account of Cardinal Egan's heart condition. So much for separation of church and state!

It has been proven that the christ did not die at passover. He did not celebrate his last meal at a Seder although I am sure that he did celebrate Seder every year of his life. The christ was a Jew, it is appropriate for a Jew to celebrate the Exodus from slavery. It is not appropriate for other religions to celebrate it with a Seder, when they do not have any idea what they are doing. Seder means order. There is a specific order of things to be done, said, prayed, sung, and eaten. The Jews were the ones held in slavery not the christians, muslims or pagans. It was the Jews who were led out of slavery by G'd. They are the ones who follow the proscribed Seder. Passover and Yom Kippur are the two most revered times. They are not to be toyed with by someone playing at hosting a Seder. Obama did not even have a Haggadah at the table. Shalom~Adoniah

Ok, this makes no sense to me. Why would anyone throw a party to celebrate a holiday that their not part of? It would be like me celebrating Cinco de Mayo...a holiday that Spanish ppl celebrate...I'm not spanish, I don't live in Mexico and it doesn't have anything to do with me. Maybe he just needed an excuse for yet another big party...there goes more taxpayer money. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**

To be honest, I don't know much about Jewish ppl (other than they have different holidays and believe differently) or Isreal or the Palestian's. It's kind of like asking me about Chinese holidays...I wouldn't know b/c I'm not Chinese and don't celebrate their holidays. At the same time, I believe each person is entitled to worship who they want, when they want and how they want...as long as they don't force it on others. I also think it's disrespectful for ppl to make a mockery out of other ppl's holidays and beliefs. As you said, you attended a Seder years ago and found it interesting. Considering that 0bama has made it a point to proclaim his Christian beliefs I find it senseless for him to suddenly throw a party for a holiday he doesn't celebrate. You are right in that whether ppl choose to believe in God or not, is strictly their choice. I don't tell anyone that they have to believe or who to believe in, the same as I don't want anyone telling me. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**

Attending a well run Seder to learn is a good thing. It is always good to break bread with friends that you wish to learn more about. But to host a Seder and run it yourself when you do not have a clue and are not Jewish is ludicrous and wrong. Shalom

There are many ‘types’ of Christians, and many of them are not real or sincere, I am sorry to say. I am a Christian, and love the Jewish people. Many of us pray for Israel and the Jewish people often – and pray for the ‘peace of Jerusalem’ as the Bible tells us to do in Revelation. I attended a Seder several years ago. It was a very interesting time. Many Christians are attending Seders, because they want to learn more about the Jewish people and their feast days. I respectfully submit, that the resurrection of Jesus Christ ‘has’ been proven, but it is the ‘choice’ of folks to not believe. Sorry if this angers you. I am not intending to do that, but couldn’t let that statement go without a comment. I am greatly concerned about the current president, and di not vote for him. If America turns from our alliance with Israel and the Jewish people, we will be curse, because the Bible says that whoever curses Abraham and his descendants, will themselves be cursed – and turning away from them is the same as cursing them in God’s evaluation. I believe part of why we are where we are at in this time of extreme hardship, is because of Amerida’s stand on dividing up the land of Israel, where the Palestian’s continue to want more and more land. They will never be satisfied. In reality, they want it all. Even during the Bush administration, the Secretary of State (Rice), was working with the Palestian’s. this is wrong – God gave the various tribes within the Jewish people, their appointed lands, and it does “not” belong to anyone else. Jews do know that he is siding with Hamas. They also know that Clinton is siding with Hamas. Israel also knows that Obama wants to make "nice" with Iran which will asure the destruction of Israel. That way Obama does not have to do anything himself. At least that is what Obama thinks. He thinks wrong. Israel will defend Herself!! He also seems interested in making friends with the Taliban and Al Qaeda. This is insane. These are our sworn enemies they attacked our country and killed our people. But they were not his people apparently. Shalom

Last year... The foreign minister of Hamas has recently endorsed Obama for president. The Los Angeles Times devoted a lengthy front-page story headlined, “Allies of Palestinians see a friend in Barack Obama.” Ali Abunimah, a resident of Obama’s district, claims that Obama said several years ago when running for the Senate, that he was sorry he couldn’t talk more about the Palestinian cause since his primary campaign had constrained what he could say. Daniel 7 (25) deals with the last king of the 4th beast of exile who will humble 3 other kings. Rav Saadia Gaon stated that the 3 kings or leaders who will be humbled, are from Israel, Greece (representing Europe), and Yishmael (representing the Arab nations). This haughty, arrogant king will speak words against G-d and the Jewish People, and he will try to change the times and the law. How interesting is it that this very word, change, is the key word used by Obama in his campaign?

I guess, as a Christian, I do not understand why someone try to understand more about a religion is so wrong. I went to Catholic school and we obviously didn't do a tradition Seder but we were taught about this and taught some of the meanings behind the traditional meal. From what I read in this article: http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1238562942442&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull This was a private event with the President and some of his closest friends and advisors. This article even addresses why the event was on the second day rather than the first. I think that this could be an opportunity for education verses a time for condemnation.

It looks like play acting to me. Maybe a stab at being "politically correct" and inclusive. Not a good thing. I know of Christians who honor and respect the Jewish customs, for our earliest roots are with God's chosen people, but that is not the same as a big photo opportunity. It is like the minstrels dressing in black face to perform. Bad taste. When we have had guests in our church who present what a Seder is it is with great emphasis on what the symbols mean. I am sorry that our president is being so offensive, by not respecting the solemnity of the Seder.

I can only think that because Obama is part Negro, he thinks that he shares the experience of slavery with the Blacks in the United States and that the Israelites had in Egypt. However if none of Obama's parents came from African-Americans he has no right to celebrate Sedah and if he is not part Jewish, he cannot do that. For all we know, he may be descended from an African prince and none of his ancestors were enslaved. He is doing it to make himself look like a great one and to get the Jewish people to think nice about him. NO conceit in his family, he has it all.

If he had wanted to celebrate a proper Seder there are many Rabbis and Jews out there who would have gladly hosted the Seder for him. But he is so arrogant that he knows it all and did it himself. It is not a dinner party. The food must be kosher from a kosher kitchen etc. The prayers must be said in order the songs must be sung in order. It should be done as much as possible in Hebrew. Like he knows hebrew. It was all just wrong. Shalom

No he shouldn't have but hey, he has a party at the white house at least once a week! Oh, Didn't you know...... It isn't about the event... it is all about him!!!!! He is addicted to the "fame". He wants to make sure that not one day will go by that someone hasn't mentioned him in the news. He's so fake. I am an American and no I didn't vote for him and I hope he fails miserably. But the weird thing is, I am thankful that he is president for only 1 reason and that is that this will stir up a revolution in the conservative movement and that is what our country really needs. Just my opinion and no one has to take my opinion as the only one that matters and I do know that there are liberals out there that will freak out at reading this. But please don't. Liberals ... please ignore me. I will not be responding. This is about Obama hosting an INSANE amount of PARTY'S at the White House. Now, who is really surprised at this? I'm not. Just think of all the OUR money he is blowing on these events. He didn't earn one dollar he is spending on these parties. Wake up people and start throwing fits and protests. But you just watch, if you do, Obama will just laugh at you and insult you with his teleprompter.

I don't know much about Judaism. People that know nothing about Judaism probably were like me and figured he was trying to show Jews he is a friend. Are you Jewish? I have not seen many Jews outraged by him hosting Seder. I'd be interested in hearing other Jewish perspectives besides your own. By the way, what do you mean by purely Jewish experience? Perhaps to Obama understanding other faiths is a step to prevent religious intolerance. I seriously doubt Obama was throwing a party. He was probably only acknowledging America as a country of many faiths.

He was going after the Jewish support. He even said so. There are several stories on the web about it. He said the same thing when he went to the wall in Jerusalem. If you talk to a liberal Jew who is very political, you might hear some support. If you talk to a religious Jew you will find someone who is very unhappy. They will not be voting for this man or his programs in the future. This was the straw that broke the camels back for those that were still supporting him. If he had wanted to learn about the Jewish experience of a Seder, all he had to do was find a Rabbi or a Jew who would host the Seder for him. Anyone would have been willing to do it gladly. At least then it would have been done with reverence and respect and not just a dinner party. Shalom
