i have an 8 year old daughter who is dying to get her ears pierced. both her father and myself think she is too young and should wait until she hits double figures but many of her friends have had it done. do any of you have a child with pierced ears and how old was the child when you had it done? also do you regret it at all? many thanks

I had my ears pierced when I was 20. My parents said I had to wait until I was 18. When I got to 18, I didn't want to pierce my ears. But at 20 my friends talked me into it at a tattoo shop (no, they didn't talk me into any tattoos though!). For a long time, I regretted it. Mostly because my ears are allergic to everything, even 18K gold so they were in constant pain. But finally I found out about lobe stretching and glass earrings, which are hypoallergenic. Now I mostly wear glass and my ears aren't that big, only 10G. But it wouldn't have been something I would have wanted to do as a child.

Hi Jan, I am wondering if you have had your ears pierced? I think you look on things differently if you havent had it done yourself. When my daughter was 5 her friend had hers pierced and my daughter kept on and on. Because I had not had mine done at that time I was against it but my Mum persuaded me to let her have it done and for me at the same time. Because of my daughters age she just walked in and out happily me I could see all the dangers and was very nervous. What I am saying is let her have it done now if you know the school allows it. Some schools you have to put a plaster over it for the first couple weeks because you have to have sleepers. Therefore get it done in the summer holidays so you can keep an eye on things. Explain she will have to take care of it and keep it clean. I dont think she will regret it at all. If she does and the hole grows over thats no hardship as she can have it redone when older although then she might feel more nervous about having it done. The young dont suffer nerves if they want it that bad lol. Please go to a good place though to have it done.

It really depends on if she is ready to take care of it so it does not get infected. Getting the ears pierced isn't really too bad but if she wanted to get a piercing anywhere else I would say no. There are a lot of people who have their child's ears pierced as a baby.

I think it should be up to each parent to decide, depending on their kid. We made our girls wait until they were 13 to get their ears pierced, mainly because I wanted them to be old enough to take the responsibility of keeping them clean so that they didn't get infected. They weren't allowed to get anything else pierced until they turned 18(which they both promptly did then regreted LOL).
