Were you ever scared of Ghosts when you were a kid?

I was. Infact I always got scared when I heard a voice at night. And I used to get freaked out pretty often! My cousins played a wonderful role in sustaining the myth. They used to say there was a SandGhost that would always pop out of sand heap and take children to his kitchen...wow I never had the thing inside my brain to think that Sand ghosts don't have a belly!Anyway there was a sand heap next to my house and it did the job of scaring me pretty well. Have you ever experienced a ghost story scaring the heck of you? Please share and enjoy.

Hi ebook-Freak! Since you also belong to the same part of the world I do,it will be rather easier for me to explain to you the incident I was met with. Well, we have been hearing much about ghosts in our part of the world and many stories were attributed to the fact (they may be wrong either) that since many people don't bury the deadbody and they burn them rather and that's why they turn out to be ghosts, Charail (she ghosts), Chhalawa, or Bhootna (as we call them in our local language - and you may be able to understand these words). Well! coming to the actual story. There was a big tree called Wan tree in our local language situated about 400 meters away towards the East of our village. I was about fifteen years of age that time. People of all ages mostly males used to come to rest under that big tree bringing their cots to sleep/rest there. At about noon time when I was sleeping and incidentally there was no else except me. I was sleeping. Suddenly I felt that somebody was pressing my belly. And simultaneously I heard a whispering voice in my years saying, "You must always come here at 12 noon". I opened my eyes and looked at up watch to see that it was exactly 12 0' clock. I got very much sscared, pulled up my cot and fled to my home. I was so much scared that I didn't describe that story to anyone. And I didn't dare to go there alone.

Hi Freak! Thanks for your prompt response and for liking the story. The terms that I mentioned (Charail, Chhalawa, Bhhootna) are various types of ghosts. Charail is a she-ghost, usually said to be very deadly and dangerous of all. Challawa is said to change various forms e.g., it becomes a stick or an animal or takes various other forms. It is not that dangerous and is said to frighten people without giving them any harm. Bhootna is a small creature like three/four year kid. It usually comes to play with small kids. Doesn't do any harm. Waan is a old tree used to give Peelus (a small fruit) some thirty years before. It is become extinct now. It is treated to be very sacred amongst Sikh community and it is said that it has some reference with Baba Guru Nanak, you may be knowing him.

I have heard of Bhootna. Yes. But it is famous in North India. The other terms might be famous in north India, I have only stayed two years there. I stay at Kerala, so I have not heard these very much. And of course, I have heard of Nanak. I have a lot of Sikh friends there. And thanks for your concern to tell me!

i was too. i don't like the dark because i'm afraid that something might come out of the dark and get me or hurt me. i think this is because of what some people like to do to children in order to get them to behave or to obey them. if they don't want you to go to a place or to touch anything, they use "ghost" to scare you and stop you from doing those. and i think scary movies with ghost in them are also some of the major contributors.

Darkness is very much associated with ghosts. And it is a common belief among the kids that ghosts do come out of darkness. Well I don't think parents really scare them to make them obey, at least in my case. My parents tried desperately to persuade me that these things didn't exist. What do you think?

When I was young, my mom always used ghost to scare me. She told me that some ghost thing might find me if I didn't behave! A good conscience is a soft pillow. Haha, I am not afraid of ghost most of the time!

I don't blame her! When I was a small kid, I got to school and was late for lesson all the time.Always day dreaming in the class, till I didn't even know the lesson's done. Then my teacher always told me never ever be lazy again. However, I didn't listen to her! It was really a challenge to her When it comes to discipline, sometimes my mom just might be creative! Haha, so , I was scared and I had to listen to her. As a resutlt, I made a progress everyday! Good luck!

Mom scared you eh? In my case it was the exact opposite. My mom tried to tell me that ghosts never existed. Thank god, I had a mother like that. If not then the whole family would be a frightful thing to live in.

yes i was... there are many ghosts and monsters here when i was a little kid, that was what i was led to believe. i get easily scared, i dont like walking in the dark, but there are times i have to when i am asked to go buy something at the store. we have here what we call "manananggal" it's like a vampire, the difference is that it's a woman and half body only, they would leave their lower half body somewhere, where no one will see it, in the forest.. .then their upper half body will fly looking for victims, their wings are like that of bats... and there are really people in my hometown that says it is true, they saw one... ghosts/spirits are just as well known here, and its scary, everytime i go outside when its dark doing errands, i would run as fast as i can, the hair on the back of my nape i know are standing, because i can feel it, somebody or something is behind me. my aunts and uncles are no help, because they love to tell scary stories and they make it sound like it is so real...

You know, come to think of it, I don't think I really did. My brother used to freak me out by telling me stories about murderers in the area, but I've always been ok with ghosts. Now dinosaurs on the other hand...oh my. I watched Jurassic Park for the first time when I was 5 and I had terrible nightmares that dinosaurs were going to come back and take over Earth...lol. But my family is very into the paranormal, so I grew up believing in ghosts and things so they never really scared me at all.

A very good family! If I were born in such a family, maybe my childhood would have been so much better. And if you are not scared of ghosts, does dinosaurs scare you? I was always wishing dinos came back alive.

Okay. Even I enjoyed Jurassic park. I loved it in fact. I always wanted a velociraptor to come to our home. I thought it might be fun, even though I have seen it killing everything. As a kid, I loved dinos very much! But now if a velociraptor offers to visit us, I wouldn't let him.

Well, dinosaurs don't scare me now. They didn't scare me much then, either, except after watching Jurassic Park for a couple of weeks I imagined Velociraptors coming back and hunting us for dinner...lol. But, no, I actually loved dinosaurs. Ever since I was 3 I wanted to be a paleontologist and even at 3 I knew lots about dinosaurs. :)

a little bit i guess... but not too much... my parents never tell me a ghost story nor scare me with a ghost thing... in fact, they always encourage me to be a brave child... so i grow up never scared of ghost, dark or anything like that... i had been trained since young by my parents to be brave and i have God always with me... so what should i be scared about? :-) take care and have a nice day...

Quite true there. Parents never scared me. They always wanted me to be brave. And now I am brave. But in those days, my cousins were not very smooth guys- and gals. So it was not easy to keep myself from screaming..

I was scared of ghosts as a kid, I think all my cousins and I were. We use to scare each other and then have to sleep with our parents because of it. I sometimes still get a little scared today even. Especially if I just watched a horror movie and I'm home alone. I freak myself out thinking that I heard something in the basement. So silly but it's kind of fun too.

A basement sounds interesting. A lot of scares and thrills arise from this section. And I would love to have one. (I don't have one already) But make sure you don't get trapped in there.

I don't remember being afraid of ghosts, but of monsters yes!! I was literally scared. I used to imagine so many things coming out of the shadows that it was so creepy. Sometimes, when the window was open and the curtain moved, I used to try to check by looking from under my covers, in the hope that nobody sees me. That curtain moving would also be reflected on the wardrobe that faced my bed and thus, there was a shadow moving there... wow what terrible memories.

Well my monsters were not really vampires or werewolves. They were usually very ugly beings with long arms and fingers, stretching out towards me... they were definitely made up out of my imagination... glad that time is over.

Yep! Same here! The fear goes out as our age increases. But remnants still rot inside us. And I think there must be away to remove these. Or else, they will remove us.

Hello friend. When I was a kid, I used to listen to a lot of ghost stories and I love them though I was very scared after hearing them. Each time when adults started to tell ghost or scary stories, I always sat among them in the middle. After the story, I did not dare to move and always walked in the middle of them as well from the first floor to the second floor. I was also afraid to walk in the dark because it easily reminded me of ghost stories ever heard. Thinking of those days, it is really funny though.

I was scared of ghost when i was young too and my parents keep making it as if that when i do something wrong or bad the ghost will come after me and hence i have to behave. That kept me from being a bad boy until i realize that ghost do exist but they are also a being that dont disturb us if we dont disturb them. Ghost can be friendly too...casper for example...

Well, that means you didn't have a clear cut idea regarding what ghosts were. Fine. Darkness is the birthplace of ghosts... and you were lucky enough to escape the stories.
