What a sad evening. My whole family was so baffled. Our "youngin'" (5 year old) cat brought us some 'treasured' gifts. She was in the house, and I heard the creek of a door upstairs, which I thought was either my sister or her long-timer, who had just arrived today for the weekend. When I opened my bedroom door, right outside my door, in the middle, top of the stairs, was a loving but heart pinching gift from my sweet cat. A beautiful, poor, dead sparrow! Oh no! I called out for someone in my family to come over and help. Father came over, as I yelped the news, asking him to come clean up before it was eaten up. Well, she (kitty) was already right in front of him, and he said she's already eating antoehr bird right in frotn of her, placing her paws on, claiming it possessively. I coudln't believe it. But I found that the creeky sound had been the attic door, which my sister had closed (but not with the tricky click to seal shut). We don' go up there often at all, as it is a storage place. Has windows, but none were open. My father went up to make sure of all of that. He wanted to make sure that nothing was open. But couldn't find our cat, so worried she was still up there, so left door open. Boom, a third bird, this time ALIVE, poor thing was caught and brought down! This was almost too much for me. :o( We later realized that it must be all of the insulation padding that is around the edge all over the attic where the roof slants down to the floor of the attic. it is like big huge, pinkish poof-balls, that have been there to keep it insulated, ever since we moved here about 25 years ago. Most likely, if you dig past it all, then there are small openings, which is how the poor birds probably thoguht it was a heavenly nesting place. Well, now the rule is that our cats are never allowed in the attic. This was such a shock though, as they've gone up there before to play, but nothing like this (and we mainly go up just at holiday season to bring down Christmas decorations and such). Has anybody had any similar problem or experience to this? Or any thoughts are very much welcome! Thanks, friends!

My cat, Baby, brought an adorable, teeny, tiny baby mouse into my bed -- while I was in it! It was soooooo cute, had big ears. I put it in a shoe box and we took it to the park and let it go on the ground. It kept hopping around and coming back to my feet. So cute. When it finally ran off to the next tree, we left.

Annie, Your Baby (cat) IS a little baby darling! Wow, I should show my cats videos of your cat to learn from (playing without injuring, if they must play with them). ;o) Too cute.

I'm sorry, sparrows are mice with wings - pigeons are rats with wings, I'm all for the cats killing them....

I understand that it is their instinct to hunt and kill. (She even did it RIGHT after she ate her Solid Gold cat canned food.) But when it happened in our very house, we were so perplexed at the same time as shocked on where she ahd caught them.

We are filthy rich humans: with legs, with size, with power, with homes, with food (able to eat without risking our lives for every bite or step we take). I don't have any mice or rats in the house (at least that I know of with my human eyes, and if I'm wrong, then our cats don't show us in the house!). Sorry I didn't realize you posted again. MyLot never tells us about second replies. :o)

Don't get too upset, it's just the nature of felines. My cat Humphrey caught so many birds in the back yard in his younger days that he doesn't evn bother looking at birds any more. Our other cat, Pish is much younger and hasn't been allowed out to go birding. He goes nuts every time a bird comes near the window where he sits. It's almost as though cats are not happy until they've had their first kill.

So true. We do let our cats outsides, but only in late morning and afternoon. I know our cats over the years have (sadly) caught many birds, and we try to make it so their collar tags jingle, but they end up crouching for long periods of time silently, until they pounce suddenly, so it doesn't jingle until they leap. Have been thinking about that. But in this case, it was INDOORS! That's why it was such a scary shock. We had no idea where these birds were coming from!

I haven't but my sister had a cat that brought her home a "gift" the neighbors homing pigeon.....my sister was totally horrified! She never has told the neighbor even though several times they said they couldn't figure out why it didn't come home!

Oh me, oh my, Jill, How sad. I can't imagine what I would do. In the least I'd hope that my kitty didn't bring the poor pigeon home to me, but someone else in the family, who wouldn't tell me. Ouch. That'd be a hard call, as I can't imagine what the neighbors would dio about your cat after finding about your cat. :o( I wish there was a way to train our furry babies not to kill another rliving creature unless they are in dire need of food (which they are NOT).

we cant blamed kitty if he/she did killed the sparrows. well cats are prone to playing and by that playing stuff ended up that they could it or what they are playing with. that's their instincts and maybe we can't make them change that. that's how cats are. even my cat tam, killed a rat outside our house. im shocked and really amazed on how he did it. but what can i say he is still a cat. thanks friend jhelai

Yes, I KNOW it is their instinct. I have been sad every time my darling cats have caught creatures outside, but what shocked me, as stated in the poasting, was that this was a mystery to me, as it was IN OUR HOUSE! My cat, she just had lunch, then went upstairs, then left a bird in front of my door, top of the stairs, where I couldn't miss it. And at the same time, she was halfway down the stairs with another in her mouth! (NO windows were open.) Then, she caught a third later as we were cleaning up before she ate them all fully.
