Spelling

How yould you cope in life if you were only allowed to speak with words you could spell, anyword you couldn't spell would be banned?? This would be SO awful for me as my spelling is awful and I would have to be either very quite all day or I would use more words than normal to get around the words I can not spell. BUT... then again perhaps that would be a good idea as it would get our brains thinking and we would have to learn to spell pretty quickly, would help us lazy people like me who make no effort to learn to spell now I am older Your thoughts on this please, all welcome

Actually, it wouldn't be that big of a deal to me. I am blessed that spelling has never been difficult for me, and I'm pretty sure almost every word that comes out of my mouth, I would be able to spell it. That's probably because I've read so much since I was a child. And when a person reads so much, naturally their vocabulary increases, and with it the knowledge of how to spell those words.

I did read an awful lot when I was a child and so like you should be a good speller, but my brain just cannot reember how to spell words, I always send the children to their father!!! I suppose I could learn the children's spellings each week with them as they are very hard words for me.

I am a writer and a very poor speller, I have to use spell check a lot. I don't know what I would do without it. I guess I wouldn't be talking much then lol. Oh well but at least I can write.

My thoughts, dear friend, are that it seems, at one point the education system let some school-agers down, and true grammar went out the door! My son, whom is 29, and in a very good job, embarasses me with his spelling, and did all thru school! Even tho' I made every effort, his response always was "that's not the way we do it in school, Mom." It was like the old 3 "R"s went out the door...and so many relied on "spellcheck" on their computers! I am a lot older than you, but if we failed spelling, we could fail a year! Good discussion...and Cheers!

I guess I'm from your generation... when spelling counted. One could have all the questions on a history exam answered correctly, and even brilliantly, but not get a perfect score because of a spelling mistake or two.

Hello Anne I think this would serve as a challenge on your part. If they would tolerate this and you're used to do it, this would make any good on yourself. This would make you think hard and strive to get the real spelling of the words that you mean. On my part, I never omit or edit some letters in a word if I would be using text messaging on a cellphone. This could makes you forgot the real spelling of the word. Never change spelling from the real one so you will never forgot...Thanks and Good Luck...Take it easy man...

I actually like this idea. As someone who will be a teacher in a matter of months, a little under a year, I know a lot about learning to spell. I like the idea of looking up and learning to spell things you don't know. I know two types of teachers: ones who only let children use, in their writing, words they know to spell and teachers would spell it to a student if they asked. I agree, it's sometimes not good to use words you don't know how to spell. You may even be pronouncing it wrong. It always amazes me how many times people use words, especially "fancy" words, they don't know the meaning of.

Personally I would Hate if they started enforcing this one, and I know that there would be many who would never be able to speak Full sentences for sure. So luckily they are not making this manditory and we are allowed to talk with words we cannot spell. But then that could be why a lot of people you cannot read their writing as well, even if they are intelligent when they speak as well.

I have been a pretty good speller, but sometimes online I post typographical errors that may make it seem as though I am illiterate.

That will be a nice debate upon it.. haha =D I guess i will rather choose to speak with words that i'm able to spell, because i know how to pronounce them in the right way.. lol =D If not, there's no point in speaking a new word when others are not able to understand what i'm talking about right?? hehe ^_^ BUt in a way, u are right too.. We will be forced into learning new words everyday, so that we are able to coummnicate more.. hehe ^_^

It would certainly discipline me, my spelling is awful. A lot of it is just habit and if I had good reason I'm sure it would improve. Now I'm going to have nightmares Anne.

It would hold you back if you only used words you could spell. It is good fun trying to use words that are different even if mistakes are made.I sometimes use a dictionary sometimes. At school we were taught to spell.split the words up ect. That was in the good old days when things were done properly.I actually enjoy words and like to use a wide vocabulary it is fun.

Well, having a mild case of aphasia, wherein I can't access words I want to use, I do sometimes have to talk around things. For example, Sunday I wanted to ask a neighbor about her composter but I couldn't come up with the word, so had to finally say "the big, round black thing in the back corner of your back yard". Frustrating.
