This sounds like a very strange question, but allow me to explain... Many people have animals on the yard, mostly chickens. Some people actualy treat the animals as their children. Now these are mostly table animals, so would you eat one of your yard chickens, or other animal. What about the turkey that everyone loves so much - to eat (especialy on thanksgiving). What if finances are tight, and you need to put food on the table for the family. Would you be able to kill the animal yoursellf or rather get someone else to do it for you. We only have a dog and a cat, and I would not eat that. If finances are so tight that theree is no food in the house, I would rather share their food.....

I think once you have given an animal a 'name' then it becomes inedible! Because in giving it a name you are actually personalizing the animal and making it part of the family instead of just an animal or a creature! It's a fine line isn't it and once you have crossed the line by naming an animal to eat it would be as you quite rightfully said like eating one of your children! I must be a hypocrite because I couldn't kill an animal and yet I will gladly eat it! Like fish, I can eat fish providing the head is not on the plate when it's served to me. In desperate times yes it calls for desperate measures and you have to put yourself first even before animals and even before pets, I hope it never comes to that, fortunately in most of society today it doesnt! So careful if you own animals if you are to eat them, don't name them first! Great discussion by the way!

That is excactly why we only have a cat and a dog. In my family, everything that moves gets a name. If you name it, you can't eat it. Now what would happen if some people start naming the tomato plants????

Do you think they eat the fruits of the plants they name? I suppose it is different from animals because you don't have the same interaction, you don't play with the plants like a pet pig or chicken, so it's ok to eat it. Blessings

Hi Beertjie.....I can see where you are coming from, but there is a big difference in meat animals and domestic animals. We live on a farm and in doing so we raise alot of our meat that we butcher to provide meals for ourselves and children. We have cattle, pigs and poultry and also a pond that we fish in so we have all bases covered. And yes we do butcher and process ourselves as I don't trust anyone else to make sure the meat is clean and free of all hair. My husband and sons also deer hunt in the fall and that providesus with venison. I would surel;y not be able to kill or eat a pet...I would try and provide for them if in fact I had to kill something else in order to provide food. flutterby

I think you have the best live, nothing beats farmliving. If I had to live on a farm, I would also provide my own food as far as posible. I would just not name the animals, eg. have a pet pig or chicken. It will be hard to kill those. It is better to just have them as farm animals and not as pets. Good response, Blessings

Thank you so much for best response!!There is nothing better than farm living. I could never stand to live in the noisy city now. I like it where it is peaceful and quiet except for the crickets or the frogs. flutterby

A very good reason I don't keep livestock at home, I really enjoy shopping the butcher aisle at the supermarket. I don't really want to know any animal personally before I consume it, but people who live on farms quite regularly slaughter animals for food. A lot depends on how you grew up, whether you had exposure to killing animals for food or if you never had to see your food walking around before it got to the table.

Yes, I agree. Living on a farm and growing up to raising your own meat does make a diference. Since when are food supposed to be pets anyway??? It is much better to go to the butcher, no cleaning up afterwards either. Blessings

If finances were tight...and they have been...my first stop is any wild plants that grow nearby, and there are loads of blackberrys, raspberrys, elderberries and crabapples in my area. My second step would be rabbit hunting, I have a friend who hunts them but his wife will not eat them so he gives them away..I would spend an afternoon with him and try and get him to gut 5 or 6 for me, then I would stew them and freeze them and ration out the stews with bread to last out a week. I dont have any pets, but I really dont think I could eat them if I had them..maybe if I had meat rabbits that I had that I knew were for eating...but then the kids would be devastated so I probably wouldnt...Maybe getting a couple of chickens in the back garden for eggs would be a better idea :)
