With all the problems caused by the GFC many people are facing tough decisions as to where their lives will lead to next. What is the best way to emerge from this period with a career that is sustainable for the longer term?

I was facing problems as a musician many years ago. Here in the UK, musicians were being thrown out of work because technology was providing cheaper alternatives to having live musicians play in pubs and clubs. Unless you were famous or had the lucky breaks, then your work was down to about 2-3 nights a week. So after 12 years I had to find a new career. I had always been interested in the human mind and its potential, and it did seem that many people were suffering from stress-related problems, so I went back to my studies and retrained as a therapist and I have done that ever since. I think it important to study what is needed in life, and fill that gap. As people we always want something and often look for somebody to provide that and will pay for it. So this is the secret here I think. There are lots of opportunities on the Internet to find out what people need. Then all we need to do if to find a way to provide for that need. It's not easy, but possible. - Derek

I would say go back to school, or even teach yourself a trade, or something you are interested then. Use your new skills to leverage a better position. Just my 0.02.
