How safe do you think you are?

The news is constantly filled with articles and stories about the dangers of our world -- many of which, in my opinion, are overblown. For example, I read an article recently that was talking about the increase in computer-related injuries, mostly from pieces of equipment falling on people. The article made it sound like there were a ton of these things happening, but when I did the math, I found out that their numbers reflected that only about 0.48% of the population of America has ever been hospitalized because of a computer-related injury. So. Do you think you are safe?

You're safe only as long as you are aware of your surroundings and stay alert to possible dangers...and even then you're not completely safe. You can also increase your safety factor if you anticipate possible dangers in advance and take steps to avoid them. I know that I'm safe. I live in a safe little area in south central Florida with a very low crime rate, I take precautions whenever doing anything that could be even remotely dangerous and I plan ahead when necessary.

It seems like taking precautions for even remote dangers would be incredibly limiting, but I suppose it depends on what sort of precautions we're talking about. When does worry start affecting your common sense? I know a woman that keeps a massive container of hand sanitizer in her purse, and uses it constantly -- after every handshake, ever doorknob, ever keyboard, or animal or person she touches, because she's so worried that she'll catch some sort of contagious disease. I don't know how much she spends on hand sanitizer every month, but I'd imagine it's a lot. Ironically, the woman in question is fairly (though not grotesquely) overweight -- she's more likely to die from heart problems than anything her hand sanitizer will ever protect her from.

In my own opinion nobody is safe. Even if you are inside your home as of today's world no place is safe. If it is your time to go then it is and it will really happened. The news above is so exaggerated and you can rate it by your self if it is really happening daily or not.

We're about as safe as we choose to be. If we remain aware of our surroundings, it covers most cases. If we take appropriate precautions, such as staying out of other people's business, we're relatively safe. If we lock our cars and homes, we're relatively safe. I could go on and on, but the point is that, if we aren't foolhardy, we can be safe from all but extreme threats. Nukes don't care about our precautions, for example!

"We're about as safe as we choose to be." I like that thought.
