ANOTHER celebrity passes away!

Mollie Sugden as Mrs Slocombe - RIP Mollie. This is her playing the role of Mrs Slocombe in the British comedy "Are you being served?".

Mollie Sugden may not be known by a lot of members here, but she will be remembered mostly for playing the role of Mrs Slocombe in the British comedy "Are you being served?". She also played an occasional role in "Coronation Street" and was in a show called "The Liver Birds" (I unfortunately have never seen the last show before) Here's an article announcing her death: http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/entertainment/5698843/uk-comedy-actress-mollie-sugden-dies-at-86/ "Are you being served?" was a very funny show centred around a department store and really pushed the boundaries of cheeky comedy at the time. Mrs Slocombe was a hilarious character with purple hair and those who DO know of this show, certainly won't forget her character anytime soon. My goodness, the last month or so has been unbelievable for celebrity deaths and I reckon life insurance premiums must be skyrocketing for them! I don't really have anything to ask here, I just wished to announce that Mollie had passed on. RIP Mollie Sugden. Did you know of her? (Here's a picture of her character Mrs Slocombe too)

Thanks for posting that James72, I hadn't heard about it. I haven't seen Are you being served for many years but remember Mrs Slocombe well. Any idea how old she was? I think I'll have to look for the programme on YouTube then I can introduce it to my son and see how he responds, no doubt it will make him laugh. Thinking back I can remember most of the characters from that show but can't bring their names to mind.

This is definitely a box-set worth owning! It's classic comedy at it's best and one of the best British comedies of them all in my opinion. It was so risque for it's time as well and so much innuendo that was freely accepted purely because of the comedic skill of the actors.

Hi James, I can now report that my son has watched his first ever episode of 'Are You Being Served' and decided it was hilarious, I couldn't remember how old I was when I used to watch it and probably haven't seen it since childhood but it still makes children laugh.

Mrs Slocombe was indeed a memorable character and, as you say, a bit on the cheeky side. I seem to recall that Mollie's Corrie character was a member of the Lady Victuallers Association along with Annie Walker?? God bless, Mollie.

What you've just shared about the Lady Victaullers Association is something new for me, so I'm going to have to go and look that one up. She sure was a funny lady and a true professional in the way she managed to make such lewd comments and get away with it! RIP Mollie and good luck dyeing all that Angel hair!

OMG, I LOVED Are You Being Served! Our local public television station had some of the best British comedies, and my father was the first to introduce me to this show! I agree...there was some serious hanky panky and cheeky humor with that show, but after watching Skins, I see that you Brits are much less uptight than us Yanks! Thank goodness for reruns, for Mrs. Slocombe will continue to live on....

It was a very funny show alright! I've grown up watching British comedies and Are you being served? was definitely one of the most risque! The lines in it were hilarious and Mrs Slocombe's catchphrase isn't one that anybody's going to forget in a hurry! I posted a link to a YouTube clip of some of her famous sayings in the first response of this discussion. I'm mostly an Aussie too by the way, but you're right in saying that the Brits are less uptight when it comes to humour! They like to whinge a bit, but humour wise they ain't half bad!

Now she really was a superstar. You can keep the pirouetting prancing pop singers, Mollie Sugden was pure class. Who can forget Mrs Slocombe's P*ssy. Great stuff. She's in the same league as Hilda Baker, Kathy Staff and the thankfully still with us, Patricia Routledge.

Good morning Mr Pike! You've mentioned some very funny ladies here! Here's a clip with some of Mollie's infamous lines: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unmkX15AeN8 She was a very, very funny lady and she'll be missed. She had a good long life though and we can be grateful for that at least.

I have always enjoyed watching "Are you being served?" It is sad that Mollie has passed on. She was a wonderful actress and I always enjoyed her humor and hair. Thank you for letting us know of her passing. We don't get much news except what is happening in the U.S.

I enjoyed that show very much too and it certainly was quite risque for it's time. She certainly WAS a wonderful actress and a very classy comedienne as well. I know what you mean about the reach of news too. Funnily enough, I'm in Cairo at the moment and found the story this morning on an Australian news site I check every day! Thank goodness for the internet. RIP Mollie Sugden.

I had seen some episodes of Are you being served and a few scenes of Coronation street a long time ago. I had come across her name as well, but had not related this together. It has been a time of high celebrity deaths James and may thier soul rest in Peace. Thanks to all of them for bringing to us all thier wonderful entertainment over the years.

Oh my goodness James! I used to watch that show all the time and I loved it! Mollie Sugden was an incredible actress and funny as all hell! That was one of my favorite Britcoms! I used to watch so many of those shows! Oh, I am so sorry to hear of her passing now too! This is getting ridiculous! The numbers of Celeb deaths is off the charts now! Thank you for those wonderful memories of Mollie and that wonderful show! I will never forget her! Thanks for many laughs dear Mollie, Rest In Peace!

She sure was! Classy too. Her infamous lines were risque at the time and it was her professionalism and skill as a comedic actress that allowed these phrases to continue and develop such a following. She may not have been well known throughout the world, but she sure did carve herself one heck of a niche! All the characters in that show were hilarious and I've been having this sudden urge to download some of the episodes. The number of celebrity deaths in the last couple of months is certainly becoming a strange phenomenon too. I hope to God the trend stops for now or at least slows down!

Oh, wow, I had not heard this. I still watch re-runs of Are You Being served. She was a funny, funny lady. I often wondered how she did her lines so straight faced. Especially the ones about her cat.*L*

She had a cat??? LMAO. It was a VERY funny show and she was fantastic as Mrs Slocombe. Even though I first saw it when I was a child, I still get a kick out of it! They don't show stuff like Are you being served? here, but I watch snippets online every now and then. Here's a flashback for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unmkX15AeN8 Mollie Sugden certainly left a unique impression!

lol. Yes, Mr Humphries was the character that did the best rendition of "Are you free?" in my opinion and he too is a great comic who played up the double meanings very well! I started watching this show when I was a kid also and Mrs Slocombe was a classic! She'll always be remembered for this role, that's for sure.

She was funny alright! The lines she was famous for in that comedy were notoriously controversial, but she did them so well they were accepted widely! And who could ever forget the purple and pink hair? I grew up watching British comedies and this is one I always enjoyed too. She had a good long life as well, so that's something!

Mollie Sugden was most famous for her role as "Mrs Slocombe" in the TV series "Are you being served?". I;m not sure if she ever played a part in any movies or not actually? She was a very, very funny lady and I've posted a link in a response above that shows her playing her character! The lines she was most known for could be seen as very rude, but she played her role so well, she became famous for these lines rather than getting in trouble for them!
