Huffington Post Article Attacks Palin's Son Trig

A lot of people are dismissing the idea that Sarah Palin might have resigned to save her family from the attacks they have suffered in the media but this article that was published in the Huffington Post is an example of just how low some of these people will sink. The post, which was pulled off the site after it was discovered by the Free Republic, is entitled "Palin Will Run in '12 on More Retardation Platform". In the article, the author, Erik Sean Nelson, who is a regular contributor to the Huffington Post, shamelessly makes fun of everyone from Down's syndrome children to Wal-Mart greeters. You can read the text of the article here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2285113/posts If this article had been written by a conservative about a liberal politician or their family, there would have been a major outcry and a call for his firing at the very least. I don't know why this attack on a minority (developmentally disabled) is not labeled a hate crime. Most importantly, it shows what depths of despicable behavior some on the left are capable of sinking to in order to attack Sarah Palin and her family. To go after the tiniest of them, and the least capable of defending himself - a baby - is the lowest form of cowardice I can imagine. Can anyone tell me why this man should not be fired? Will those on the left speak out against this or will they find a way to excuse it?

I agree he should be fired, I do believe after the Letterman remark, she decided to gt out of public office to save her family, but you don't think that is going to stop them from trashing her. This person that can only make remarks about a baby is the lowest of life form and I think he should be fired and banned from ever being able to write for anyone again. I play cards in a site where in the lobby some who can't get attention any other way, make rude remarks about the people's kids. I can only imagine if this is what they do in print, what their real home lives are like. You are right it takes a coward to pick on a child. It is a shame that there is people out there so cruel that they would make a woman quit her job, I hope that she finds something even more better than the governor's job.I think that all of Washington is scared of her, and what she would do for the people if she got in, I truly hope she runs in 2010 she will have my vote.

If they weren't afraid of her, it makes no sense to spend so much time trying to discredit her. I think the point is to try to discredit and embarrass her so much that people will never take her seriously. This kind of article though, HAS to make people see that she's not just paranoid, these guys are fighting dirty. I haven't heard anyone call for his resignation or for his firing. I am waiting to see who will defend this cowardly attack.

I posted on the media bias against Sarah Palin a few days ago. I cited the fact that the very liberal National Organization of Women paid big bucks to get Don Imus fired for his poor choice of words (if they can say Letterman's joke was only a poor choice, why can't I say the same for Imus?)...but said not one word of condemnation concerning Letterman's 'joke' about the deflowering of a 14 year old child. R*p* is no joking matter to most women! N.O.W. is supposedly a media watchdog that claims to protect the rights of women in the public sector. Yet they would not come to the forefront to defend a woman govenor and her daughter. We hear how much the liberals are for the downtrodden and the vulnerable....social WELFARE programs are their favorite pastime...but a 14 year old child and now an disabled infant are fair game for the hatefulness running rampant in our society against conservatives. It has passed idiocy and is quickly entering insanity. The dogs have been let loose...it merely saddened our president that a soldier outside a government building is murdered by a terrorist (an act of war!)....yet our President is OUTRAGED that an abortionist is murdered in church. While I was outraged at the murder of the abortionist as well...no one had the right to take his life...I am equally, if not more outraged that an American soldier can be killed in an open act of war on OUR SOIL...and it only saddens the president...and goes unnoticed by most of the country. INSANITY!

Well this is what our society is coming to, it is not only going on here, but the game rooms that I play in on here. Once someone get piss*ed at someone else they start making remarks about the kids. And saying they should die. I can not believe what our society is becoming. I think Obama is saddened by a lot of things that he should be more concerned about what is happening in this world of ours here at home instead of beating a path overseas every chance he gets. I think he should of made a statement that what Letterman said was uncalled for and that it would not be tolerated by the tv shows and news and mags or what ever. I think Letterman should of been repremaned for the remark and this guy that wrote the article making fun of her baby should of been fired. As long as we sit back and let them get away with what they saying, when it involves a child they will do it.

I think that the author of that article at Huffington Post and the editor who allowed it to be published are the ones who are retarded. Who in their right minds would attack a little boy like that? These people simply has no shame or any sense of decency in the first place. They should never be allowed to work for the media.

I am rather afraid that a sense of decency is now officially considered a relic of the past. I haven't seen much evidence of it lately, that's for sure.

If anyone finds a way to excuse this, they're the one who are "mentally challenged"! It's shameless and indefensible and the writer should certainly be fired. I'm not sure if those who contribute articles to the Huffington Post are actually employees of the Huffington Post or if they just submit articles whenever they write them. Whatever the case, articles like this have no place on any site, in my opinion. I hope there is an outcry about it but this is a holiday weekend so it may take a few days for that to happen. I hope Arianna Huffington officially denounces this writer and this article and I feel confident she will. Annie

Rollo, I agree completely, if I had a website and this guy submitted something for publication it would first be looked over with a fine too comb IF I'd even give it any consideration at all. There are so many of these internet blog sites or whatever they're actually called these days and I have no idea how each of them actually operate. I know I've seen several people on various TV shows who have been introduced as "Huffington Post contributors" and I've found some of them to be intelligent and thoughtful and others haven't been as much to my liking. I think that can probably be said about any of these types of sites. I really can't understand how anyone could have found humor in that article to begin with and I'm one of those evil liberals. I appreciate irony and satire as much as anyone but this isn't either, it's mean and vile and has no place anywhere. Annie

Thank you, Annie. I confess I do not know either whether the contributors at HuffPo are actually employees or if they just post their articles. However, if this guy wrote for my website, I would at the very least ask to see the articles he writes for pre-approval before publishing. He wrote an apology but there's obviously a little gap in his understanding of how far is too far. There's no place in the press for articles that deride and ridicule the disabled.

Arianna Huffington is a well-known and prominent force in politics and her site shouldn't have this kind of stuff on it. Satire and spoof, even if it's a bit edgy or mean is to be expected when it's aimed at adults. But I do hope she is careful in the future about this writer, he will damage her reputation.

I don't think people will be laughing at the hateful "jokes" he made in the article. He will probably take a lot of heat, even from the left. He should be fired.

The author put in a little apology in which he said he got letters from some "loved ones of the retarded" and they thought it was hurtful so he decided to pull it. Great, but I think he already knew that at least one loved one of the retarded was also going to be unnecessarily offended in a way that reflects not in any way on her politics but only on her personal life and uses a child to make a poor joke. I would certainly not let this guy post on my website again without first proofreading his posts before publication. This was a serious lack of judgment and very unfunny.

That is horrible and he definitely should be fired. People with Down Syndrome deserve the same respect as everyone else and people who make fun of them just get me so angry that I see red. And it definitely should be labeled as a hate crime because he is singling out a group and making fun of them just because they are different. I must also say that labeling these sorts of things as "oh the left are so horrible" or if its a conservative saying something horrible "oh the right are so horrible", takes away from the issue. It doesn't matter whether a person is left or right, some people just have it in them to be vicious, cruel and offensive.

This is a simple case of bigotry towards this group and it's so far out there that it's hard to see the humor in it. I certainly wouldn't see the humor in it if I had a Down's syndrome child.

You know how most liberals feel about the most innocent, babies. If you can't kill them, insult them and their families. They're not going to fire this Nelson person. They'll probably call him a hero.

I think that they are going to hope that not too many people noticed it and assume that because it's gone that many fewer will know what it said. But the text is out there, it was recorded before they took it down so there will be those who do know.

Well, I didn't even mention his very improper grammar which screams out to me from one particular sentence... but, that would be off the point. I can't say he's stupid, since I don't know him, but I will say he shows an appalling lack of good taste and sensibility.

He should be fired or given a severe reprimand. The trouble is that the Democrats feel it is all right to insult some and not others, and it has been going on for so long that they think it is all right. So it is all right to insult female white conservatives or white males, but not if the person is of a minority or a darker color. I am sure that the Huffington Post would have said nothing insulting if an Eskimo or native Indian female was the governor of Alaska and she had given birth to a child with Down Syndrome or if she had done the same as Sarah Palin did and if she had been a choice for Vice President, even if she were conservative in nature. Years ago, when I was a girl, it was common to call people who were non-white names, and even those who were not born in the British Islands, and that went out of favor. How soon will it be before insulting conservatives who have family members who are mentally or physically disabled go out of favor as well? The sooner the better.

The real problem (aside from the lack of class it shows to personally attack people) is that all this focus on personalities, family crises, the appearance of one's children and even their disabilities, takes focus away from the real issues. People shouldn't be deciding their political future based on such ridiculous criteria. The news media is responsible for buying into the short, snappy, byte-hungry appetite of the masses and neglecting the important issues at hand. I posted a discussion asking people for the reasons they hate Sarah Palin based on her stance on issues. I don't really have any responses yet... I don't know if I will get any.

Disgusting! Who the gave that putz the idea that it's be a good idea to make fun of a BABY? And a disabled BABY at that? What a sick SOB that guy is. Nice of the moron stream media to completely ignore it completely. The guy should be crucified. He serves no useful purpose and is a boil on the backside of all humanity. I hope he never breeds.

But tell us how you really feel, Kitty, LOL. I have to agree that anyone who uses a baby as a weapon in a political war is just the lowest form of humanity.

In my opinion whether you are on the left, the right, the top, the bottom, or in a completely different world, this kind of behavior is 100% inexcusable and unacceptable. Nobody should ever ever use a disabled person whether they be adult or child to "get their point across" or make a dime. I agree this should indeed be considered a hate crime. If someone were to use Obama's children in this manner with a similar story but placing it on race instead of disability they'd be sent to the slammer and pegged world wide as a racist biggot. This is one of the lowest lows any supposed human being can come to, and I do hope that they do something about it. It's no different than when that guy on the radio made a comment about a black womens basket ball team and then he was fired from the station and completely shunned from future possible employers. Hate is hate, discrimination is discrimination now matter what side it comes from or how you look at it, it is what it is and should be treated equally when it comes to the "punishment."

I agree, hate is hate, no matter who it comes from or is directed at. I know that grown men and women who enter public life must deal with some scrutiny of their personal lives and realize that there will be jokes both good and bad. But a baby is a baby, and should not be a casualty of political warring.
