I have had a Geocities for years. It was my general site where I could write about and upload anything. Now it is gone. I do have a writing blog, a music and singing site, a religious site, and a protect the innocent site, but where do I put the stuff that does not go in a particular category like my fan fiction, general articles, etc. Prefer free. So what site is going to replace Geocities? Any ideas?

My first site ever was at geocities - I've long ago closed it down since having my own paid site but know it's going to effect alot of people with them closing. Don't know about what will replace them as they were huge and around for ages. Only free one I know of is bravenet - I've never used the free site feature but have used the webring feature for years and the service has always been good. There's a link at the bottom of my profile if you'd be interested in checking them out - as I said though I've never used the free web hosting.

I was thinking of going to a paid site, but my novel has not finished yet, and I do not have that much time or money to write short stories for cash. I suppose one you get a pay check from a publishing company or an agent, that is once you are a paid published author, then you can go and get a paid site. But not famous yet. I have thought about Bravenet, and had a web ring under them, but well it went when the other free site I had where I had my fan fiction went kerplunk as well.

I thought only published writers have paid sites and famous artists, singers, anyone who made money. I will have to look into it. I cannot afford it right now, what with my husband not being well, and the wedding coming up in late Auguust, and saving for other things.

I have seen and heard fo Geocities before but do not know much about them. I heard that they were going offline too though in another discussion here. I have no idea what will be replacing them either.

Geocities was one of the first sites that offered free web pages where you did not have to go through your own internet company. At that time, there was also Fortune City, Xoom, and a host of free web sites. The only thing is that if you wanted to write something that could not be considered general - you had to upgrade to a paid web site.

I only know geocities is a chat site, like yahoo chat but many years ago yahoo chat and geocities chat merged I never used geocities for anything else but chat but since they merged I never visited the site anymore if you want free website try www.freewebs.com but if you want great traffic, yahoo, msn, blogger have it

Geocities is not a chat site. It provides free web pages. It might offer a chat service, but it is not essentially a chat site. You heard of Fortune City and Tripod? They offer web pages, and I have a singing and organ playing one on Tripod, and I quite Fortune City years ago. I liked Geocities because it easy to update.

Probably the introduction of blogging had made Geocities not very viable. That was just my guess. I think it may be possible to move it to other free web hosting site. I do know one that is free- myweb.com or something if I remember correctly. Cheers.

I figure blogging had something to do with it. I moved most of my stuff to Blogger, but I will have to find if people put their fan stories on it.
