Why does my dog steal my socks?!?!

I have two dogs from the same litter. They are not yet two years old. The female, Bailey, steals my socks! She has done this since she was a puppy. She would take one and chew it full of holes so we finally gave her a cluster knot of the chewed socks as a toy. But that wasn't enough for her. Now I've noticed that it doesn't matter if the socks are dirty, clean, short, knee length, etc. She must always have a sock with her. Why does she do this? Our other dog could care less about socks. Yet I find them stashed all over the house and everytime I come home what does she bring to greet me? Yes you are right, a sock. And usually not the same one each time.

And when she brings you a sock, do you reprimand her? Or do you smile or laugh or pet her on the head? Or maybe it's not that obvious, but in some way you are reinforcing this behavior. Giving her a toy made of socks definitely helped reinforce that socks are a toy. Dogbreedinfo.com has some really great info on dog behavior, and everything else dog related. Also, the picture looks like a lab. Labs like to chew and eat things more than other breeds. Still, you should be able to correct this behavior if it bothers you.

Not to be telling you shame, shame, but my husband taught me early on in our marriage ..... if you give a puppy a sock, then the puppy will always think of socks as the puppy's toys!Give him/her something else and see if that will re-train the puppy, especially a toy called a Kong ...... The good think about the Kong is it's truly indestructible, and for a "search and hunt" for the puppy, just put some peanut butter inside it .... then see your puppy figure out how in the world it can get to every last bit of that wonderful smelling food!

Stealing your socks is a way to get you to play with them and they also love your scent. I have 2 german shepards. 1 silver black female about 5 years old and 1 black tan male about 2 years old. The 2 year old is unbelievable. My husband watches the Ted Nugent hunting show on a regular basis and everytime that show or any animal show comes on Otis is close to the TV and watching every move that the animals make. Sometimes he wants to run after the animals on the TV, so we have to watch him when he nears the TV. He gets a little excited. I have learned so much owning german shepards. I do believe they are about the smartest dog. Sometimes, he gets the best of me and surprises me on a daily basis. Just a warning about the socks though. A friend of mine had a dog that loved to steal socks also but the dog swallowed alot of the string from the socks and ended up having emergency surgery.

Possibly because your socks carry the scents from everywhere you have been while your puppy was home all day. It is like going on a trip via the olfactory senses...two socks and a shoe to chew on is like putting LSD in the kool-aid as far as canines are concerned. Bow-wow-wow-man!

Your female dog found out how awesome socks are! They're warm, confy, some of them have funky colors or cute drawings, and she can bite them and play with them, why would she not want to? Your dog knows how to have fun ;)

My kitten, Jason, has a thing for socks. We even have an expression for it. I do the laundry, roll the socks up and ask the children to put their own laundry away. Sometimes they don't do it right away and Jason does some basket fishing. We find socks all over the place. When I see them, I go tell the person the socks belong to that "you've been Jason'd".

Sometimes dogs do these, not only on socks but even laundry or something soft to chew. They seem to do this to tinker on their teeth. My dogs do this before. What I did was of course, remove those things away from them. Buy or get them some bone toy or something to make them chew and practice their teething ability. An old baseball ball is also a nice alternative.

Thats cute. Our dogs dont chew our socks. I think I got the bad ones. If I ever leave my underwear laying around well you can bet that they will be chewed up. Its kind of embarrassing. I just throw them away and replace them. I also bought a laundry sack to prevent my underwear from laying around.

well consider it a honor that your dog steals your socks because mine are so smelly that one whiff of my flavourfull feet and it would have her running for her mother but I guess they just need something to play with

Yes u r right, as long as u keep up the ordeal with her, she thinks everything is ok. When u placed all those socks in a ball was a hoot, it's like a lil kid with a blanky or soother, as long as u keep letting them have it, they wantit as a pasifier. Now that the dog is 2 ( 14 in their years 0 this is going to be a hard habit to break. Good luck.. U HAVE TO SHOW THEM THAT THIS IS NOT OK. REMEMBER ALWAYS LUV/ CARE FOR YOUR DOG/ PET, THEY WILL ALWAYS LUV U..

Maybe your sock has a smell or something or maybe they're colorful.

WOW! I've already responded once, but I just had to say again for everyone: your dog should NOT chew your stuff! A properly trained and raised dog, with the right mindset and toys, will not do these things. All these people completely owned by their dogs and either don't care, or don't realize it... Well I guess it doesn't matter if you don't care about holes in your things! I do, but maybe I'm wierd.

Oh you are so lucky. My dog chewed my mom's favorite shoes. Not only once. Several times. Broke my mom's heart to see her favorite shoes damaged beyond repair.

lol..This is really funny.. Your puppy is a sockaholic..hehe..Maybe you should put your socks where he can't reach them. Maybe when he gets used to the fact that there is no more socks he can chew on he will eventually stop.

My dog likes to do the same thing as your dog does! Especially when he was a puppy, he likes to steal socks wherever I put and chew it ,rip it apart, shake his head with it... now he is almost a year ago, he will still try, but he will drop when I catch him doing that. I think they think it is one of their tos and can play tug of war with it I guess... It's cute though :-p

It's interesting to keep dogs but not for me because i'm deeply afraid of dogs since i was born. Therefore i don't have much experience to get along with dogs.
