Would you break into your own home? I am watching the news and a Harvard professor was arrested for breaking into his own home. If you got locked out of your home accidentally would you break into it? Do you think you would get arrested? Have you ever had to break into your own home.

My mom and I were going shopping a while back. I ran out the door and so did she and we both thought the other one had the keys. Now we were standing out in the yard and could not get in the car or into the house. The almost solution: I decided to crawl through a window. Mom hiked me up. I opened the window and started to crawl in. She was complaining about how this was ruining our day. I got stuck in the window with my back end hanging out. The more she complained, the more I laughed. Her house was located on a very busy road. It must have amused the people in traffic to see an older lady standing outside with an angry look and someone's shaking back end hanging out the window. The solution: My daughter was eight years old at the time. She fit through the bathroom window (the other window that was not locked) and got in and opened the door. Mom brought a chair outside the house and I was able to back out of my situation.

Mom and I never saw eye to eye (no pun intended)! It took an eight-year-old to make some sense of the mess. I'm just glad that my head wasn't sticking out the window. At least no one driving by could identify me! Maybe being arrested would have just added to the fun?

I have broken into my own home when accidentally locked out. No, I had no fear of being arrested and I don't know why anyone would. It's your home! Once the police arrive and you prove that you belong there that should be the end of the story. the cops and you should have a good laugh about human foibles and all should go on their way

Right after I wrote this discussion, I went to the bathroom and guess what, yes I was locked out the bathroom, I had to pick my own bathroom door lock..

Hi, Chevee! I had to do this many years ago. A neighbor came running to see what was going on, but not the police! Since then, I keep spare keys in a couple of places, just in case.

Hi Cheeve, Few years ago we got locked out and my hubby had to break the kitchen windw to get in, but no one arrested us and another time when my hubby was at work I got locked out, couldn't break the window so I climb up on my conservatary roof in the rain to to get to my bedroom window, I got in eventually and apart from my neigbour helping there was no one there so fat chance of me getting arrested, but how can he get arrested breaking into ones own home? and yet the real burgler gets away with it, it bafles me. Hugs. Tamara

I have done that a few times back in my hometown. Luckily I never got arrested because my neighbors knew that I lived there. I think the professor got arrested when his neighbor thought that he was a thief. Now if I ever accidentally lock myself out again, it is best to just call a locksmith to open the door for me. This can save the repairing cost.

The cops stopped at our house once because they were driving by and saw my hubby jump over the back fence into the yard. I had to assure them it was my hubby and he had just forgotten his key. In case of accidental lock outs, I think the best policy is to leave a house key with a trusted neighbor or family member. My in-laws live across the street, and they have a key to our house, and we have one to theirs.

At one apartment in San Diego I had to do it all the time. My door automatically locked when I went out, and I frequently locked myself out when going to the laundry room. Usually on a night when hubby had ship board duty. I learned to break in, and better yet, to take my keys with me.

No. I think I would go to the neighbor's home and stay with them until I could call a locksmith the next morning. Of course that is assuming one has neighbors that they trust. I live in an apartment, and in this case, I couldn't try to break in. Any damage I would do, would come out of my security deposit. And I'm determined that when I leave, I'll be getting every penny of that deposit back!

I can understand your situation, living an apartment. I would do the same thing.

We had to do that one time and I will never forget how hard I laughed. We locked ourselfs out and my husband is a big man and the only window in the whole place that was going to be an option was the kitchen window and it was just a small window. All our other windows are up so high you would need a ladder and of course the ladders were in the shed and the shed is locked and the keys are in the locked house on our key ring. My husband has always had a temper and he was mad as mad could be and that was funny enough to see but when he said kitchen window I immediately thought, "Oh My God what's he going to do grease the window frame so he can fit through?" Well he did get stuck and knowing enough not to laugh and not being able to not I had to walk away and of course I heard about that too. Funny Stuff Now!!!

Sorry I got carried away and was laughing even now writing this I really didn't answer the question did I? No we have never been questioned by police but I doubt it would fly and especially in our case the police would have been so entertained I very much doubt they could maintain long enough to write the ticket. LOL

lol that sucks. i have been locked out of my house before though and had to break into it. i went throw my window. i don't think i would get arrested. hopefully.. i mean, maybe if someone saw me doing it and didn't know who i was they would call the cops on me but other wise i don't think so and where i live now you wouldn't be able to see my break into the house because of our patio.

I never had to break into my own home, but I helped my mother break into the home I grew up in (while I was still living there). She had locked us out, so she broke a window and helped to push me through, since I was much younger and limber to climb through a window. No one called the police on us, though. Geez, that poor man! I can't understand why he would be arrested, unless he had no proof with him, in his wallet or something, that he lived there. I could understand a neighbor calling the police if that professor had just moved in and the neighbor didn't know that he lived there, but how else can you get into your home if you've locked yourself out? You HAVE to break in, unless you've given someone else a key and you were able to get that key from them. I've given my more responsible son a key to my home and I have a key to his home. I think everyone should do this with someone they trust implicitly, just in case. I'd rather take a drive to pick up that spare key than have to replace a window or door lock.

He didnt exactly break into his own home. He was able to enter from the back but the door was jammed. So he went to the front and broke it down. Atleast thats how it was reported here

I would if I had to but no, I've never had to break into my own home, thank God but if I ever were in that position, yes I would break into my own home. After all, it is my home to do as I please so if I couldn't get in, I'd have to break in. lol Now in my younger years, living at home I'd be locked out and I've climbed up onto the window ledge and crawled in that way. lol Oh those days.....

I have done it many times and so far everything is ok. I don't think that it should be right for people to get arrested for getting into their own home. I don't know why the professor might have got arrested, maybe he did not have an ID with him or he was not aloud there because of some divorse. What ever it might have been I hope that it never happens to me since it happens to me often especialy with my daughter that she keeps locking the doors with out even knowing if I have the keys.
