Bad listener

I wish my English were as good as my hangout buddies. I feel inferior whenever we hold a conversation in English. I can't keep up with them. It makes me down. Can you suggest some strategies to cope with my weakness? I'm especially bad at listening although I have tried to listen English songs and taped conversations. Help me Please !

The only way is to speak more and listen more.. Through speaking, u are able to get the right pronounciation of words, and from there, u are able to listen properly.. hehe ^_^ Just by listening to english alone is not enough as there are ple with different accents when it comes to speaking too.. hehe ^_^ So in order to listen well, learn to speak first ^_^

Thanks for your suggestion. I just make easy speaking to my friend, such as; how are you ? good night or how are you doing . But when we make more conversation, I feel difficult to speak.

hi.. my english isn't good either.:) i think you shouldn't be down by that fact. i don't have very perfect strategies to boost your english, but i think the best way to improve your english is by doing it, by make conversation and talk in english. the more you do the more your english will improve. so don't be down, ok. listening the english song are good, i do that too.

hi, i think your english is quite good. and to be a very good conversant in English, you need to be patient. Listening to songs and conversations is not enough. It's like you're gonna be studying from basic but not to say that you need to start in grade 1 or so....but, you have to read also, and not just reading it with your eyes but you need to read it as if seems you are telling a story or sharing what you are reading. In that way, if you keep on doing that, as time passes by, you'll be able to converse intelligently without noticing that you are a good conversant in English. Just be patient..... by the way, if you don't mind from what country are you?

I wish I could help you but I am not sure how to teach you how to speak better English. I think you may learn quite a bit here at Mylot though, just by reading what other English speaking people type or have to say. I hope this helps you.

One of the obstacles to becoming proficient in a different language is trying to translate while listening. I believe in total immersion, partly because I went through the process. It worked wonders to my friends too. Therefore I would like to suggest you allocate some time of the day for pure English, where you write, read, speak, and think in English. Ideally you should also listen to English conversations. I do not quite agree to the use of taped conversations. It is suited for beginners, but not for those who have some grounding in the language. Real life spoken English, like Malay and its variants, contains things like metaphors, proverbs, and double meanings. A better way to understand the language is through reading, and to a certain extent watching movies. Avoid the use of a bilingual dictionary. The use of an English dictionary to find the meaning of words helps in a better grasp of the language.

how about reading interesting novels and bring with you a dictionary as your guide... another would be watching English movies that interest you... right now, i'm practicing Niponggo (Japanese language), watching Japanese movies and reading dictionaries with English subtitles helps me a lot

Friend, I guess you're from Indonesia, just like I am. Try to listen to the English-spoken movie/film, then close the translation text below. Just listen, and do not care about the meanings. Try this frequently, and you will boost your listening ability. Good luck!
