Up-date On My Too Much Trouble To Be Bothered Discussion

Sometime ago I did a discussion of how my grandmother/mother's former electric company account had a credit refund. I had asked them if I could claim it and they said I could provided I signed a name change affidavit, have that notarized, also send a notarized copy of my mother's death certificate, etc. Since it costs me $3.00 per document and it would cost me about $15.00 to get another death certificate of my mother it just wasn't worth the bother to claim the refund/credit since it was a mere $2.77...like sheesh Well I don't give up easily...I re-emailed them (twice) and asked them if they could accept a PDF file as an email attachment of a scanned copy of my mother's death certificate as proof of who I was and send the refund to me in my name. WEll--gollllly....I just got an email back from them...and guess what? They are sending me the credit refund check of $2.77 to me in my name and accepted the PDF file of the death certificate as proof Hip, hip, hooray! Okay not an enormous amount, can't get my Crystal Champagne with it...but it was the principle of the thing...glad I thought of sending that PDF file to them...heehee So have any of you had to "battle" the right for a refund, even though it was small amount and manage to do so, without a ton of costly notarized documented proof?

It ain't over 'til it's over... Never give up... and many more quotes that say to never give up on anything, especially if it is for the principle of it. I always like to send things via email, whenever I can. Why waste paper and money? Good for you. You get a lollipop, too!

I might if it cost less than the amount of the refund, but for $2.77 I don't know how hard I would try.

my battle like that involves my car insurance. My soon to be ex husband name is still on my car insurance and that costs me extra. I have had a heck of a time getting him off of there. First they said if I sent a letter and he sent a letter then they would take him off. Then they changed their minds and said I would have to have a copy of my divorce paperwork to get him off of there. I called again yesterday and they had the letters and they would take him off my insurance retroactive to March when they received the letters which gets me a small credit. yeah! Lets here it for persistence. I have called them four or five times concerning getting him off of there.

And technically speaking that really WAS my money, since before I got the account changed in my name (and different account number)---I was still paying by money order c/o my mother's name..but it was my money!

wow..that was surprisingly easy of them. $2.77..hmm..well,that's about 6 cans of cat food, right? um..i'm in a battle right now,a check surfaced from my uncle's old job-mom deserves it for estate costs for her brother.but it's $159,worth it. she has to get re-uped for executor tho,as they waited until the estate closed to notify us

I agree, it is the principle of it all and I'm glad you got it resolved!! Good for you!! So what if it is $2.77 another .23 would make it $3.00! It's like having a coupon of sorts to use anywhere you wish! lol It all adds up no matter how you put it.

That's good but I am maybe overly cautious... all this over $2.77? It has cost them much more than that to pay the person a wage to deal with this with you. My advise... watch where you cash the check.... if you cash it at your bank, your account number goes on the back of the check. thereby this "electric company" that has been so diligent to find the proper home for $2.77 now has your bank account number when they get the cleared check back...... I wouldn't bother with it over $2.77. I wouldn't take the chance.

Wow--you sound overly cautious...well let's put it this way if they do pull any funny business I know exactly who to complain to...the judge from the Public Service Commission who helped out once before on an "issue" with the electric company---she must have been down their throats since the electric company was overcharging me...after all was settled I didn't have to pay an electric bill for three months due to the overcharges they had caused me

There's a valuable lesson here. Because of your patience and persistence, in addition to your resourcefulness, you accomplished getting what you wanted. Like you say, it's the principle. It would've been easy enough to just not bother because of the small amount of the refund. However, you didn't walk away and shared with your myLot friends the idea of finding a solution without spending a lot of money. Thanks.

Hey! That's awesome news! I'll do quite a lot for the principle of the matter but, of course, when it costs more to get something, I'd probably just have forgotten about it until I saw this discussion of yours! I think it's great! Even that small amount SHOULD be in your pocket and not the electric company's. I'm glad it is!!! Way to go, pye!!!

It's a miracle that something actually worked out without a lot of unnecessary red tape. Now don't spend it all in one place.

So far, I have not had to do that, but I am glad you were successful and I will also keep that in mind for other things. It is the principle of the matter.

Well, I'm glad that all worked out for you. It's b.s. that some of these big companies think that if they add more things for you to go through that you will just give up and they will get to keep your money! Way to go! It's the principle of it!

I'm glad you were able to get that straightened out. Like you say, it isn't a lot, but since they told you about it, they should give it to you without a lot of hassle. It is amazing what you can do with pdf files these days. Have a great day!!!

Yes PDF files are great...When I had to send back a contract for an article of mine that was to be published, I asked the editor if I could send a scan PDF file of it rather than mail it back ---the place was in Canada and would have taken a lot longer to get the check of payment

Hi pye, Well done to you and you are rignt, its not the amount of money, its the principal, why should they have it? its not theirs and no I haven't had to have anything like that done. Bright Blessings. Tamara
