I would suggest Ubuntu if you are a newbie. Ubuntu takes care of all the basic operations such as audio/video player, mounting of other hard drives (if system is dual boot),moreover the GUI is best and glassy,If you can get a hand on "Ubuntu ultimate " it will be great. You can get adequate support for ubuntu from internet.

i think the most user friendly linux distro is ubuntu for graphics ,configurations, programs pre-installed and so on...opensuse is nice as distro but i think it would be really suitable for business needs..may be have a soul a bit related to the business world as os ..in any case if you like this distro and are little patience when you start to configurre it in the way you want is an excellent distro too!!Now i am using ubuntu and in reality i found good with it...so i can suggest you also this!!

I will say PclinuxOs and LinuxMint would be the most user friendly Linux distributions i have tried till date. PclinuxOs is based on Mandriva so it has all the tool which are already available in Mandriva plus its own set of new tools. Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu which again a very popular Linux distribution out there.
