Hello guys I've been missing you a lot. I was gone for four days because my computer was attacked by this win32 virus that I need to reformat. I've been looking all over my friends who has a talent of fixing or reformatting computers. One friend promised but never came up that why I forced myself to learned this "do it your self" method. At last I finished it just this morning but I need to recover all the programs that was been wasted because I was not able to saved it... Well, anyway..how about you guys do you have ask someone to reformat your computer?

I've been using computers since early 1980's coupled with the problem of having unreliable or no computer shops around, I always ended up doing my own work. I've never had any fear of messing up my computer but always did of loosing data such as docs and photos. Now with so many choices of being able to backup everything easily on external drives and USB drives, dvd's, etc, I don't have that fear anymore. The only thing that worries me is that I have the right OS for the computer, meaning that not all computers can be upgraded to Vista from XP and older OS's. I fix computers for other people and it's amazing how many lose their disks. Having a backup of your drivers is very important as well, nothing worst than having to find them after a reformat. For anyone having problems with slow computer and viruses that are hard to shake, a reformat can do wonders...just be sure you back up your data else where, have a backup of your drivers on a disk and a good copy of your OS disk that your computer can handle. RAM is very cheap these days so maxing it out on your computer makes it very happy.

Hello my friend I would not say "you're perfectly right" if I never fix my pc in my own way..yes you're right. The only problem for that would your docs and photos if you don't have enough size of your back-ups.Well if you have enough supplies of USB that would not be a problem...I agree with you my friend...thanks for responding...

A driver is a small program that lets your computer control a device like your printer, keyboard, dvd drive, modems and so on. Without them you would not be able to use a device if the driver is missing. Usually, when you get a new computer you may get a disk that has the drivers on it in case you need them in the future. Sometimes they may be included on your OS disk. And sometimes you may have a backup on your computer. If you get a printer you get a disk that has the drivers necessary for whatever operating system you have. Digital cameras may have a disk as well or it may be loaded to your computer the first time you connect it via the USB port. Do a search for drivers and you will get all the info you need. You can also find software that will back up your drivers and even look for updates. A few may be free and some you must pay for to get the full deal. I could go on and on but a simple search will help you better. I will gets you answers if you want me too because sometimes it is hard to decode what others are writing about something.

Assuming that you are using Windows XP or later then you could simply choose to reformat the selected drive during install. As for the programs, either place the CD in the drive or run the setup exe if the program is stored on another drive and follow the prompts. It may seem a little daunting if you have never installed an operating system before, but the whole thing is very basic nowadays.

Yes your right asylum as long as you have all the back ups you need and complete drivers of the mother board that would no be a problem because if there's " plug and play" in the computer, it's the same with fixing it...everything is there as long as you know how to read and understand...thanks for responding....

I use to do that before, when I really didn't know what to do but, as it happened a couple of times more, I became aware and learned from observation. Now I do it by myself but, reformatting actually decreases that life span of the hard disk so I really don't like reformatting the computer if something bad happens. I'd use it as a last resort. I end up re-installing all the applications so I really keep all of them in one good place to lessen the hassle. Operating System, Video card and the rest would follow.. (^_^ )

Thanks for the info, cmdr001 I see that reformatting the hard disk drive doesn't really decrease its life span.. It would be nice if we coudl simply solve certain problems that we encounter while we use the computer... I'm actually experiencing one with our desktop as it doesn't boot through the Windows XP Logo.. I mean, there's this part wherein you can choose to which set-up should I start the computer, like 'last known working settings' or something to that effect but, as soon as you hit 'Enter' on any of the options, the computer just turns off. I don't know if I have to buy a new hard disk or just send it to a computer shop for them to diagnose it.

I'd just like to correct the fact that reformatting the hard disk per se does not reduce its lifespan at all. Formatting a hard drive is no different procedure than reading/writing files as you do on your everyday computer usage. The only thing happening is a small portion of the hard disk getting wiped of so that the hard disk reports to the system that no longer there any files in there; or in case you do a full format, a simple read/write/read test will be executed across the hard drive to check for errors but this again is no different from your everyday usage. There's really nothing to be afraid on formatting the hard disk, save for data loss. Sometimes there are better ways to deal with certain problems other than formatting the hard disk though.

Well, this is a terrible way to make diagnostics, so I can't really help you through here. But, it may not be anything too grave; probably some critical file that may have gone corrupt and is preventing Windows from booting up one way or another. I guess that it will cost you, but, it should be solvable by someone with a bit of experience. There -are- ways of making sure that you can still work with your computer while it's "broken". For example, if my Windows suffers some critical flaw that I feel I'll take more than 30 minutes fixing back to full order manually, I'll just grab and replace it with a fully prepared Windows in less than 5 minutes, only potential losses being a pair of programs that may not work well until I re-install them, but all other programs, games, chat logs... it'll all be there and working. If it wouldn't be that, I could have a secondary hard drive with a Windows ready to go in case something worse happened, but, I skip that step since I got other machines I can resort to. Granted, regardless of what I do, what I cannot prevent too easily (Although I do have the other computers that can replace this one in case of a break down) is if there are hardware failures. Those aren't easy to fix and many times require a part replacement altogether... but as long as it's not that, if you make the proper research, you'll find plenty of ways to -always- be sure you can make use of your system to some extent until you bring it back to optimum condition. Read about hard drive partitioning, hard drive (Ghost) images, multi-boot and you'll find many things that may be useful.

We have 3 computers here, I format them all when needed, set up the network & even upgrade when needed as well. I had a friend who went to university for 4 years to learn all things IT, when she came to my place one day before I knew what I was doing, she had to format my computer......she did not have a clue....she actually broke it. I learnt how to do it myself, after I bought a new PC. I now take care of everything IT related here & my 16yo son is able to help his schools IT person with everything (son knows more than IT guy) & it's all good now. I personally think thet if you can't do it yourself...then you should not own a computer at all. You would not own a car without knowing how to put petrol in it, nor own a house without knowing where the kitchen was. Same as a computer...know your machine, operating system & everything about it..... then you can truly help yourself instead of having peole who 'think' they know what they are doing...stuff things up for you.

What is going on I have heard so many people getting viruses. I had one about a month ago. It was so agravating. I brought a hard drive and a Webroot Antivirus with antispyware. Then my daughter came to take care of everything because I have not a clue. She was able to transfer my files to the hard drive and then she reformated my computer. I was so happy and proud that she had the smarts to do this.

This is not a way. Sometimes, the virus appeared on my computer, but the virus can not be removed, or the anti-virus software can not detect the virus when the only thing we can do is to format, which is something we have no choice. Therefore, we can usually access the Internet, they must pay attention to. A good anti-virus software installed, regular check narcotics.

Reformatting a PC is just very easy right now unlike before when DOS was the only OS available. If you have Windows XP cd installer you could do it. Windows XP will assist you during its installation. Regarding recovering your data you have less chances to recover it right now because you reformat it already and this makes difficult to recover it. But there are third party software that you could use restore files but at least you haven't put anything on your PC after re-installing it because the more you put data on it the more difficult it is to recover the data.

I do it my self.. =) its easy to reformat a PC, I agree with you, the difficult part part is restoring the application of your previous PC, its time consuming specially if you don't have a copy of those softwares and sometime i do have a hard time doing the backup especially when i have my files unorganized in my system drive, so i have to search for it and transfer it to my backup drive. =)

well, so far i do it by my self... n i've done it many times, coz some times when i install n uninstall some program, it cause error in other program or slower... n system restore can't handle this so perfect norton ghost? whew... it cost so much space deep freeze? some program need to restart, so, deep freeze is useless so far, i use avg free anti virus, n so far so good.. 1 tip, it' better to have 2 local disk or more, 1 for program n other(s) for data or master (installer) program

PLEASE do NOT use AVG. It will not pick up anything that can harm your PC. It's not worth it at all even though it is free. Try Avira....still free & alot better. AVG is just as bad as Nortons.

The first desktop I owned was reformatted several times by my cousin. When I bought an IBM notebook there's an option to restore it to factory settings as if reformatting it. I haven't really tried doing it alone but compare to when I first had a computer I am more confident now that I can handle it.^_^

Yes, I barely even format my computer/my laptop all by myself. I prefer ask a help from those who understand computer/laptop, you know, just to make sure that everything is in right order. Sometimes I request them to teach me so next time if the same thing happens again I already know what to do. I know that computer and laptop are very sensitive electronic hardwares, so just be very careful with them. =)

I used to ask my cousin for help with regards to my computer. He is the computer expert in the family. The time had come when I grew tired of his services. I know I don't have the right to demand from him because his service is always free but things are getting very inconvenient. He will attend to my computer after weeks of constant follow ups. He gets to work only if his on the mood. I learned reformatting my computer by accident and found out that it will only take me thirty minutes to an hour to reformat. Now that I know the risk and the proper way of reformatting my computer, I explore and did some dual booting as well:)

Yes, I learnt to Format my computer long days back, when I got several problems including viruses in my PC. And from then I got many ideas like bootable CDS, files sytems like NTFS or FAT32. The other OS and as well as many Hard disk Formatting softwares and making and deleting partitions. Formatting PC is not a very hard task but, getting your PC back at the stage where it was before something like that you faced is really difficult. Now always I keep my bootable CD, OS CD, device Drivers CDs before formatting.

Hello friend, first of all congrats to you, not because you succeeded in reformatting your computer but because you have tried it yourself rather then depending on your friends. Regarding computers, i can say you that the more you are practically involved, the more you learn and master the skills of handling it. I personally always reformat my computer myself and never have to seek others help. I would also suggest if even after trying one cannot solve or repair the problem then instead of asking your friend to do the job for you, you can rather ask him to teach you how to do that. This way, your problem is also solved and you also learn something. And as an IT student, according to me, try not to reformat your computer very often as it might reduce your HDD life. Better you can use a good antivirus program and firewall instead.. Regards Chharugh
