I was reading a new article online earlier. It was saying one of Obama's plan for education is to make the school year (180 days) longer and have students spend more time there. Anyway, do you think this will happen? Do you think it's a good idea? Why? Do you have kids?

This is already common in a lot of places. I have cousins who went to school all year long and I think that they did very well academically as a result. I think that it is a good idea because unless you are a parent who continually works with your kids or sends them to summer school, the kids forget a lot during those months off of school. At my kids' schools, they spend the first three to six weeks of school to do nothing more but review what they learned the year before. If they had less time out of school, this would not be as necessary. I know that my kids tend to lose some of what they learned when they are out of school and I send the younger ones to summer school and work with all of them keeping them reading, writing, and practicing their math skills. Think of how much the kids whose parents do not have the time to work with forget each summer.
I think that the kids need a break, but not three months each summer. I think that they would do much better having their time out of school shortened in the summer, and spread out more throughout the year. Give them two weeks in the Spring, two in the Summer, two in the Winter, and two in the Fall. this gives them ample time to relax, yet doesn't cause them to lose what they have learned.

That is the best idea I have ever heard of.Our summer holidays are seven weeks long and the kids get so bored and by the time they have gone back to school they have forgotten what they have learn't.Easter is two weeks ,christmas about two weeks as well they are the right length. That summer holidays are so long as keeping them occupied is really hard work.Even if they went in for a two day week during the summer it would relieve the bordom. The teachers must have a break but even they must get bored. No one can afford to be on holidays forever anyway.I think Obama has the right idea.If he does it our government might take it up.The kids have so much pressure on them to learn so much this way it will give the slower ones time to catch up and take the pressure of teachers, kids and parents.Especially if the parents work it would cut the cost of child care and stop kids staying home alone. In other words be supervised all the time by an adult so hopefully some kids will stop terrorising the neibourhood and getting into trouble.
